Pori Moni appeals to HC for quashing charges under narcotic case
Dhallywood actress Pori Moni on Sunday appealed to the High Court for quashing the case filed against her under the Narcotics Control Act and subsequent indictment by the trial court.
The appeal was submitted according to section 561, A of Criminal Procedure Code, 1898 on saving the inherent power of High Court Division, Pori Moni’s lawyer ZI Khan Panna to UNB.
On January 5, Dhaka Special Judge of Court-10, Md Nazrul Islam indicted Pori Moni and two others in the case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
The court fixed February 1 as the next date for hearing the testimonies of witnesses.

On January 2, the same court set January 5 for hearing arguments on whether to press charges against the trio in the case.
Pori Moni and two others are currently out on bail in the case.
On November 15 last year, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Emrul Kayesh took into cognizance the charges framed by police against the accused.
On October 4, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted a charge sheet against Pori Moni and the two others in the case.
CID inspector and also the investigation officer in the case, Kazi Mostafa Kamal submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.
Pori Moni was arrested on August 4, following a raid by RAB on her Banani residence. A case was filed against her under the Narcotics Control Act the following day.

On August 22, she was remanded in judicial custody again after she was produced before a court on the completion of a day's police remand, her third.
On August 31, 2021, a Dhaka court granted bail to Pori Moni in the narcotics case until the submission of the charge sheet. She had walked out of jail the following day.

Dhaka court defers framing of charges against Pori Moni in narcotics case
A Dhaka court on Tuesday deferred the framing of charges against actress Pori Moni and two others in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
The trial in the case can begin once charges are framed. All the three accused, including Pori Moni, are currently out on bail in the case.
Dhaka Special Judge of Court-19, Md Nazrul Islam set January 2 next year as the next date of hearing in the case in the wake of a request from the actor's counsel.
Lawyer Nilanjana Rifat Surovi sought some more time from the court on the ground that Pori Moni fell sick on her way to the court this morning.

Though Pori Moni was not present in the court, the other two accused in the case -- Ashraful Islam Dipu and Kabir Hossain -- had appeared before the judge.
On November 15, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Emrul Kayesh took into cognizance the charges framed by police against the accused and fixed December 14 as the date for the framing of charges.

Pori Moni granted permanent bail in narcotics case
A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to film actress Pori Moni and Ashraful Islam Dip in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sattabrata Shikder passed the order when Pori Moni’s counsel submitted a petition seeking bail for his clients.
The court also accepted the chargesheet and sent it to Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge for trial.

Dip was an associate of Raj Multimedia owner Nazrul Islam Raj.

Eka gets bail, but cannot walk out of jail yet
A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to film actress Semon Hasan Eka in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act but she will have secure bail in another case to get out of jail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Atiqul Islam passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by her lawyer, Humayun Kabir, virtually.
But Eka will have to stay behind bars until she gets bail in another case filed against her for torturing her house help.

On Aug 1, the court sent Eka to jail after rejecting bail in two cases filed against her for reportedly torturing her housemaid and having narcotics at her home.
On July 31, Eka’s house help filed one of ten cases against her for torturing and police filed another for keeping narcotic substances at her home. Both the cases were filed with Hatirjheel Police Station.
Police arrested Eka on the day from her Ulon apartment at Hatirjheel on charge of torturing her house help.

Court orders release of Ctg woman wrongly put behind bars
A Chattogram court on Tuesday ordered the release of Hasina Begum put behind bars wrongly one and a half years back.
Additional Metropolitan Session Court -4 Judge Shariful Alam Bhuiyan passed the order this noon, said bench assistant of the court Omar Fuad.
Hasina Begum, 28, wife of Hamid Hossain of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district, has been serving the jail term instead of real convict Hasina Akther,42, in a narcotic case as law enforcers arrested her wrongly for the similarity of her name to the convict’s.
The incident came in the limelight on Sunday as defence lawyer Golam Mawla Murad drew the attention of the Judge of Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Session Court -4, Shariful Alam Bhuiyan, following a police investigation.
Defence lawyer Golam Mawla Murad told reporters on Tuesday that they are yet to receive the full verdict of the court.
Earlier in the morning, the jail authorities were asked to submit a report to the court saying Hasina Begum and Hasina Akther are two different persons, and Hasina Begum is not an accused.
Advocate Murad said, “No case was filed against Hasina Begum, now in jail. But she has been languishing in jail for the last one and a half years. Her only offence is the similarity of her name to that of the real accused. Their parents’ names are also different.”
Hasina Begum is the wife of Hamid Hossain of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district while the real convict, Hasina Akther, is the wife of Hamid Hossain of Ismail Hazi Bari of the same upazila.
According to the court, police recovered 2,000 Yaba pills from Moijjartek in Karnaphuli on February 24, 2017. A case was then filed in this connection.
Later, police arrested Hasina Akhter on February 25, 2017 in this connection. On November 27, Hasina Akhter secured bail from the court and went into hiding.
On July 1, 2019, Judge of Chattogram Metropolitan Court-5 Jannatul Ferdous sentenced six years’ jail to Hasina Akhter and fined Tk 5,000.
On December 26, 2019, police wrongly arrested Hasina Begum from Chowdhurypara Hossain Boro Bari in Teknaf in the case and she has been in jail since then.

No separate tribunal for narcotic cases; bill okayed
The Cabinet on Monday approved in principle the draft of an amendment bill dropping the provision of setting up separate narcotic control tribunals to pave the way for competent courts to try narcotic-related crimes.
