Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Sunday arrested the truck driver who was responsible for the deaths of 15 people in a road crash in Dakkhin Surma upazila. The arrestee was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 27, son of Mistar Mia of Moksedpur in Sherpur upazila. Tipped off, a team of Rab-9 conducted a drive in the area and arrested Shafiqul from Dakkhin Surma upazila on Sunday, said media officer of Rab-9 Senior ASP Afsan Al Alam. The injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared four more of them dead. Two people were killed and eleven others injured in a triangular collision among a truck, a pick-up van carrying police and a motorbike on Companiganj-Sylhet road in Goainghat upazila of Sylhet district on Wednesday night. The deceased were identified as Pulok Roy, 30, son of Gopal Roy of Dakkhin Surma upazila and Bikrom, 30, son of Bipul Chandra Mandal of Chalibandar area of the city. Shyamal Banik, inspector of Sylhet District Police (media cell), said the accident occurred around 10 pm when the truck collided head on with a Sylhet-bound police pick-up van. A speedy motorbike also crashed into the truck at that moment, leaving the biker dead on the spot and two others injured. They were taken to a local hospital where doctors declared the bike’s pillion rider dead. Eleven people including 10 policemen and the pick-up van driver were also injured during the accident.  

Three people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a pick-up van and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Sylhet-Jakiganj road in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet on Saturday. The deceased were identified as Lutfur Rahman, 72, and his wife Joly Begum, 60, both residents of Golapganj upazila, and Yunus Mia, 28, of Jakiganj upazila. Lutfur Rahman, additional superintendent of Sylhet Police, said the accident occurred around 9am when the pick-up van crashed into the CNG-run auto near Ranaping Mina Centre at high speed. "The accident left one of the occupants of the auto dead on the spot and five others injured. Two of them succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital," he said. Road accidents in Bangladesh As many as 2,329 people, including 291 women and 381 children, were killed and 4,361 others injured in 2,159 road accidents across the country in the first half of the current year, according to a report. The road accidents occurred on various highways, national, inter-district and regional roads between January 1 and June 30 across the country. Shipping and Communication Reporters Forum (SCRF), a platform of journalists, prepared the report based on news carried by 22 national dailies, 10 regional newspapers and eight online news portals and news agencies. Of them, 251 people died in motorbike accidents alone, which is 33.96% of the total fatalities, Road Safety Foundation said in its latest report released on August 6. Road Safety Foundation, an NGO, prepared the report based on news published in nine national dailies, seven online portals and electronic media.

Two motorcyclists were killed when a truck hit their bike on Sylhet-Tamabil Highway at Gucchagram area in Gowainghat Upazila on Friday noon. The deceased were identified as Yusuf,30, son of Rahmat Ullah from Jagannathpur village in Chandpur and Sohel, 28. Parimal Chandra Dev, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gowainghat Police Station, said they along with  friends were coming to visit Jaflong from Chandpur. When they reached the Guchhagram area, a truck hit them, leaving Sohel dead on the spot. The bodies were kept in the hospital morgue, the OC added. The truck was seized in the incident. However, the driver and helper managed to flee.  

A Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) student was killed in a road crash in Sylhet on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Shabbir Ahmed, student of the Chemistry Department. Kotwali Model Police Station SI Abdus Sattar confirmed the incident. Witnesses said a truck hit Shabbir's motorcycle at the Subidbazar point at around 9 pm on Wednesday. Sabbir lost control of his motorcycle and fell on the street. He had severe head injuries and died on spot. SI Abdus Sattar said that after receiving the information, police seized the truck and arrested the driver upon reaching the spot. The body was recovered and sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue. After the accident locals blocked the road disrupting traffic for about half an hour. Later police brought the situation under control.

Eleven people, including four members of a family, were killed and 10 others injured in separate road crashes in Sylhet, Habiganj and Gaibandha districts on Friday.

An auto-rickshaw driver was killed after his vehicle collided with a bus at Parua Point in Companiganj upazila on Wednesday morning.

A rickshaw puller was killed when a truck hit a rickshaw in city’s Surma Market area on Wednesday morning.
