Luis Diaz both hero and villain against PSG as Bayern extend winning streak to 16
Bayern Munich maintained their flawless start to the season with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), with Luis Diaz having a bittersweet experience. The Colombian winger scored a brace, Bayern’s only goals of the night, before seeing a red card that left the Bavarians struggling throughout the entire second half.
In an exciting clash at Parc des Princes on Tuesday night, Vincent Kompany’s side won the tie 2-1. The hosts’ only goal came from João Neves in the 74th minute.
With the victory, the German giants have now won all 16 of their matches this season. Bayern had previously suffered a 2-0 defeat to PSG in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup held in the United States last July. Since then, they have not experienced such a setback.
PSG, on the other hand, tasted their first defeat after three consecutive wins in the UCL this season.
Mikel Merino’s brace helps Arsenal maintain perfect UCL run
Bayern started the game brightly and went ahead by capitalizing on their first notable chance of the match in the fourth minute. Diaz entered the box and fired past goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier after Michael Olise’s initial shot was blocked, giving Bayern an early lead.
PSG responded in the 22nd minute, but Ousmane Dembélé’s effort was ruled offside after a VAR check. Moments later, Dembélé was substituted due to discomfort in his leg and replaced by Lee Kang-in.
In the 31st minute, Serge Gnabry’s shot from outside the box struck the post, and Bayern capitalized a minute later to double their advantage. PSG defender Marquinhos lost control of the ball outside the box, allowing Diaz to carry it forward and beat the goalkeeper for his second goal of the night.
The hosts tried hard to reduce the deficit before the break, but it was Bayern who could have extended the lead to 4-0 as they narrowly missed a couple of opportunities. However, just before halftime, the visitors were reduced to ten men as Diaz was shown a direct red card after a lengthy VAR review for a foul on PSG midfielder Achraf Hakimi.
With a man advantage, PSG became dominant after the break. It was an all-PSG show in the second half, as they controlled 87 percent of possession and produced 19 shots, eight of which on target.
Despite being a man down, Bayern held their composure, relying on key interventions from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
In the 68th minute, Neuer made a crucial save to deny a long-range effort from Vitinha. But the German goalkeeper had to surrender in the 74th minute, when João Neves expertly converted a cross from outside the six-yard box, giving the home side hope of a comeback.
That was all for the hosts, as PSG could not find an equalizer despite continued pressure in front of Bayern’s box.
Liverpool hand Real Madrid first UCL defeate despite Courtois’ resistance
With the hard-fought victory, Bayern sit top of the table with 12 points from four matches. Arsenal sit second with the same tally.
In other contests of the night, the Gunners put three past Slavia Prague, thanks to a brace from Mikel Merino and a successful penalty by Bukayo Saka.
Liverpool handed Real Madrid their first defeat in the Champions League, while nine-man Tottenham Hotspur continued their unbeaten run in the UCL by demolishing FC Copenhagen 4-0.
Atletico Madrid returned to winning ways by beating Union Saint-Gilloise 3-1 after a heavy defeat at the Emirates Stadium last month, while two Italian sides — Napoli and Juventus — were held at home to a goalless draw against Eintracht Frankfurt and a 1-1 draw with Sporting CP respectively.

Goals galore as Atletico stuns Real Madrid in fiery derby clash
In a match defined by fierce rivalry between two of Madrid’s biggest clubs, Atletico Madrid delivered a statement win, handing Real Madrid their first defeat of the season with a resounding 5-2 victory at the Riyad Air Metropolitano. The win not only solidified Atletico’s dominance in the Madrid derby but also extended their unbeaten run against their rivals to six consecutive league meetings.
The tension was palpable from the opening whistle. Atletico struck early through a Robin Le Normand header in the 14th minute, continuing their streak of scoring first in every league match this season.
However, Real Madrid, who had been an impenetrable force this season, quickly found their footing. Kylian Mbappe and Arda Güler turned the game on its head with two quick goals, giving Real a 2-1 lead. For a moment, it seemed as though Los Blancos would maintain their perfect record.
But Atletico refused to back down. Just before halftime, a towering header from Alexander Sørloth leveled the score at 2-2. The second half, however, belonged entirely to Diego Simeone’s men.
The turning point came early when Julián Álvarez converted a penalty, restoring Atletico’s lead. Minutes later, the Argentine forward sealed his brace with a stunning curled free kick that left Thibaut Courtois helpless.
As Real struggled to find a way back into the game, failing to record a single shot on target after halftime, Antoine Griezmann capped off the night with a final goal in extra time, completing the rout.
Harry Kane hits 100 goals in 104 games as Bayern thrash Werder Bremen
The loss raises serious questions for Real Madrid, who had conceded only three goals in their opening six matches, leaked five in one night. Though they edged possession, Alonso’s side managed just two shots on target, compared to Atletico’s seven.
Despite the defeat, Real still provisionally sits at the top of the league table with 18 points, but their lead is now tenuous, as they are just two points ahead of Barcelona, who have a game in hand. Atletico climbed to fourth on 12 points from the same seven matches.

Van Dijk’s late winner snaps Atletico’s comeback in five-goal thriller at Anfield
In a dramatic five-goal encounter at Anfield, Liverpool secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid, with captain Virgil van Dijk netting a last-gasp winner in stoppage time.
On Wednesday night at Anfield, all eyes were on new British record signing Alexander Isak, who was making his highly anticipated debut for the Reds. However, it was Mohamed Salah who once again stole the show from the opening minutes.
In just the fourth minute, Salah’s low free-kick was cleverly diverted by Andy Robertson that defeated Atletico keeper Jan Oblak, who was making his 500th appearance for the club. Two minutes later, Salah doubled the lead with a stunning solo effort that marked his 250th goal in English club football.
Salah nearly struck again in the 19th minute, but his fierce angled shot narrowly missed the far post. On his debut, Isak also had a couple of good opportunities, including a 41st-minute effort denied by Oblak.
Super subs combine to give Arsenal a 2-0 winning start at Bilbao
Despite Liverpool’s dominance, Atletico Madrid showed their resilience. They clawed their way back into the match just before halftime when Giacomo Raspadori slipped a pass into the box, and Marcos Llorente fired a precise angled strike past Alisson, reviving the visitors’ hopes.
The second half was a much more closely contested affair. Salah had a golden chance to seal the game in the 65th minute after being set up by Florian Wirtz, but his shot struck the post. In the 81st minute, Llorente sparked one more time to produce a stunning long-range volley that deflected and flew past Alisson.
Levelling the score, Madrid side was focused to return with a point, what invited the home side to pile pressure on the Atletico defence. Liverpool started throwing everything forward, which resulted in a series of corners in the dying moments of the match. Then, in the second minute of stoppage time, a right-wing corner found Virgil van Dijk, who rose above the defenders with a powerful header to send the ball home.
The late winner caused Diego Simeone to lose control and receive a red card. With this result, Atletico Madrid’s nightmare start to the season continues, while Liverpool’s perfect start extends to five games in all competitions.
Next up, Atletico Madrid will host Eintracht Frankfurt on September 30th, while Liverpool will visit Turkey to face Galatasaray on the same night.
