Three members of a family were killed in a road accident in Rajshahi’s Puthia upazila on Saturday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Abu Hanif (25), his wife Fatema Khatun (22), and her younger sister Zuthi Khatun (14). Firoz Hossain, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Paba Highway Police, said the family members were returning home after shopping in Rajshahi city, riding on Hanif's motorcycle. The accident occurred in the Shibpur area when a bus collided head-on with the motorcycle, leaving all three seriously injured. Locals tried to rush them to Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital. Hanif and Zuthi succumbed to their injuries before reaching the hospital, and Fatema passed away later while undergoing treatment there. SI Firoz Hossain said they are currently reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the bus involved in the accident. Legal action will be taken in this regard, he added.

A tragic collision between a passenger bus and a truck early Saturday claimed the lives of 22 people on a highway in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, authorities reported. Emergency services from the Minas Gerais fire department responded to the scene and confirmed that 13 other individuals were injured and transported to hospitals near Teofilo Otoni. The bus, which had departed from Sao Paulo, was carrying 45 passengers at the time of the accident. A motorbike rider was killed in a collision between the motorbike and a Jahangirnagar University (JU) double-decker bus on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar on Friday night.  The deceased was Sohrab Hossain, 44, a resident of Gangutia in Dhamrai. Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saugatul Alam said  university bus carrying students crashed into the motorbike around 9:45pm near the Thana Stand area of Savar when it was returning to the university, leaving, Sohrab critically injured. Driver of a fire service truck had a stroke while behind the wheel and died, causing a collision with a rickshaw and two other vehicles, leaving the rickshaw-puller dead and eight people injured at Chashara crossing of Narayanganj earlier today (July 24, 2023). The fire service truck driver was identified as Jahangir Hossain, while identities of the deceased rickshaw-puller and the injured could not be known immediately. Three men were killed and one was injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Ghosher Haat area on Chandpur-Cumilla highway under Chandpur Sadar upazila earlier today. The deceased were identified as Habibur Rahman, 25, a resident of Matlab Dakshin upazila; Nesar Ahmed Hawladar, 25, a fish trader and resident of Wapda Gate area of Chandpur city; and Mahabub Pradhaniya, 50, resident of Bishnupur village of Sadar upazila. Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Chandpur Sadar Police Station, said that the accident occurred when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw overtook a truck and collided head-on with a bus – leaving three passengers dead on the spot. Police seized the auto-rickshaw and the truck, said the OC, adding that the bodies will be handed over to their families after completing legal formalities.   

Five people were killed and one was injured in a collision between a truck and a CNG run auto-rickshaw at Malipara in Khetlal Upazila of Joypurhat district on Monday morning. The deceases were identified as Nafis Hossain, Nafis Hossain, 18, a HSC 1st year student of Govt. Sayeed Altafunnesa College and a resident of Sakharunj Chowdhuripara area, Amzad Hossain, 42, the auto-rickshaw driver and resident of Itakhola Bazar of Khetlal upazila, Shahnaz Parvin, 45, a resident of Khaddogudam area of same upazila, Shahinur Akter, 38, field staff of Khetlal Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) office and Sirajul Islam, a resident of Dhamoirhat upazila of Naogaon district. Razibul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Khetlal Police Station, said the auto-rickshaw carrying five passengers collided with the truck coming from the opposite direction, leaving two died on the spot. The rest were rushed to a local hospital where three others succumbed to their their injuries, said the OC.

The bodies of two students, who went missing after a collision between two speedboats in Kaptai lake on Friday, have been recovered. The deceased were Liton Chakma, 20, and Elina Chakma, 20, residents of Baghaichhari and Borokol upazilas respectively and students of Higher Secondary Certificate level of Open University. The body of Liton was recovered by fishermen early Sunday while and the body of Elina by fire service workers on Sunday morning. At least nine people, including five students, have been killed and more than 38 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The tragedy occurred in the state's Palakkad district when one of the two buses attempted to overtake a private car, according to a top government Minister. "Nine people, including five students and a teacher, were killed in the accident,” Road Transport Minister Antony Raju told the local media on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to offer his condolences to the families of those killed in the accident. "PM @narendramodi has expressed grief on the loss of lives due to an accident in Kerala’s Palakkad district. He extends condolences to the bereaved families and prays for a quick recovery of the injured," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted. A probe has been ordered into the accident, the Road Transport Minister said. Road accidents are common in India, with one taking place every four minutes. These accidents are often blamed on poor roads, rash driving and scant regard for traffic laws. The Indian government's implementation of stricter traffic laws in recent years has failed to rein in accidents, which claim over 100,000 lives every year.

Nine people were dead and around 50 injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Rangpur-Dinajpur highway in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur early today (September 5, 2022), said police. The identities of the deceased couldn’t be ascertained immediately. Read: 5 killed in Rangpur road crash The accident occurred around 12:30 am when the Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Islam Paribahan’ collided with a bus of ‘Joyana Paribahan’ coming from the opposite direction during heavy rain on the highway, near Kharubhaj Bridge in Ikorchali Hajipara area, said Mahbub Morshed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Taraganj highway police. The accident left five dead on spot and more than 50 injured, he added. Besides, the condition of two injured is also critical, he added.

At least three people were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a CNG autorickshaw at Bagra Bazar area of Sadar upazila on Friday night, police said. Only one of the deceased - Ripon, 40, a resident of Brahman Sakua village Bagadi union of Chandpur sadar - could be identified as of filing this report. The accident occurred around 9:30pm when the cylinder carrying truck hit the auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction near Bagra Bazar area on Chandpur-Raypur highway, said Md Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandpur Model police station. The impact of the crash was such that the three people travelling in the auto died on the spot, added the OC. The bodies were kept in the Chandpur Sadar Hospital, said the OC. At least 2,329 people, including 291 women and 381 children, were killed and 4,361 others injured in 2,159 road accidents across the country in the first half of the current year, says a new report by the Road Safety Foundation.   The road accidents occurred on highways, and national, inter-district and regional roads between January 1 and June 30 across the country.
