The Jagannath University Teachers' Association (JnUTA) has alleged that the University Grants Commission (UGC) forced the authority of Jagannath University to take the admission test through the General, Science and Technology (GST) system. JnU to build two gates to sustain it’s tradition Sheikh Mashrick Hasan, general secretary of the Jagannath University Teachers Association (JnUTA), made this complaint in a press conference held at Jagannath University on Saturday (January 20)  noon.  He said, “While Jagannath University is trying to advance, chaos is made to suppress by keeping a system like GST. We have our own Academic Council, they are the supreme authority to decide the admission process.  Yet it is being forced upon us again and again,” he alleged. Khadijatul Kubra, a student of Jagannath University (JnU) who was released from Kashimpur central jail securing bail in two DSA cases on Monday (November 20, 2023) morning, sat for an examination shortly after her release.  Khadija was released from Kashimpur Women's Prison at 9 am on Monday and went directly to Jagannath University to take part in the semester final exam.  Although the exam started at 10 o'clock, she entered the hall at 11:30 am. She sat the exam in the fourth semester with two semesters lost. Her elder sister Sirajum Monira said, "We came to the prison early in the morning. Then Khadija was released at 9 am. Khadija's semester final exam starts today that's why we came early in the morning." The Appellate Division on Monday suspended bail of Jagannath University student Khadijatul Kubra for another four months in two cases under the Digital Security Act(DSA). An Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order. Advocate BM Elias Kachee and Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua stood for Khadija, while Assistant Attorney General Saiful Alam represented the state. A student of Jagannath University, who sustained burn injuries in a gas pipeline explosion at Dhupkhola Bazar in Gandaria area of Dhaka city on Monday, died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery early Saturday. The deceased was identified as Mehedi Hasan Shaon, 22, son of Abdul Latif from Sadar upazila in Natore district. With 30% burn injuries, Shaon was undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where he succumbed to his injuries around 6:15 am today, said Inspector Bachhu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital police camp. Earlier, on Monday, at least nine people sustained burn injuries in a gas pipeline explosion in Dhupkhola Bazar area. Also read: 2 women among 9 burnt in gas line explosion in Dhaka The injured were Md Sohel, 42, Mehedi Hasan Shaon, 22, Ali Hossain, 52, Rashed Miah, 32, Sahara Begum, 65, Abdur Rahim, 50, Mim Akter, 22, Alif, 22, Mizanur Rahman, 32. Of them, Abdur Rahim and Shaon received around 40 and 30 percent burns, respectively. All the injured were admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and Burn Unit. According to a statement of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited, a contractor of WASA was setting up pipes for water supply in the area on Monday morning. The explosion occurred in the morning when the gas pipelines were damaged during digging by the WASA contractor, it said. Responding to the call, an emergency team from Titas Gas rushed to the spot and fixed the issue, it read.  

Police Tuesday arrested three members of a ring, dealing in stolen mobiles, from Dhaka's Karwan Bazar for their involvement in the snatching of the mobile phone of Jagannath University (JnU) student Parisha Akhtar. The accused are Md Ripon alias Akash, Md Shafiq and a juvenile whose name has not been released. On July 21, a youth snatched the phone of Parisha, a student of zoology at JnU, while she was on a bus in Karwan Bazar, Rubaiyat Zaman, additional deputy commissioner Of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Tejgaon Zone, said Wednesday. However, Parisha quickly got off the bus and caught a suspect and she also beat him up. Her friends caught another suspect. A general diary was registered with the police and a case was also filed in connection with the incident, the ADC said. After checking CCTV footage, Tejgaon Police arrested a juvenile from Karwan Bazar. He initially said he did nothing. However, the juvenile later admitted his involvement and named another person called Ripon alias Akash. "During interrogation, Ripon also admitted his involvement. He sold Parisha's phone to Md Shafiq, who buys stolen handsets, for Tk4,000. Shafiq was arrested along with the stolen phone from Karwan Bazar Tuesday," the ADC said.  

Dr Rasheda Akhtar, professor of Anthropology department and Dean of Social Sciences faculty of Jahangirnagar University,  has been appointed as new treasurer of the university. Communication officer of the University, Professor Dr Mohmmad Mohiuddin confirmed the decision to UNB Tuesday.
