After a long pause, the Baliamari Border Haat – along the Bangladesh-India border – under Rajibpur upazila of Kurigram district will reopen in the first week of December, said authorities. The decision was taken at the deputy commissioner-level joint meeting with the presence of representatives of the two countries at Baliamari Border Haat premises on Monday. After a span of two years, Bangladesh-India border haat at Lauwaghar-Balat reopened on Tuesday. Balat is a town in the Indian state of Meghalaya (East Khasi Hills District) while Lauwaghar is at Dalora under Sunamganj district, Bangladesh. The joint border haat management committee decided to re-open this border haat in a joint meeting held on April 19, according to Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Indian non-profit organization CUTS International and Bangladeshi organisation Unnayan Shamannay on Friday demanded reopening of the jointly run markets along the India-Bangladesh border locally known as ‘border haats’ shortly.

An announcement has been made to close down the border haats of Chhagalnaiya of Feni and Srinagar of India for indefinite period as precautionary measure to check spread of the Coronavirus.
