War crimes: Death-row convict Majid arrested in Madaripur
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have arrested a war criminal and death-row convict Abdul Majid from Madaripur around four years after he was awarded capital punishment in 2019.
The 80-year-old Majid is the son of Miraj Ali of Purba Moudam village under Purbadhala police station in Netrokona, said a press release signed by Farzana Hoque, senior assistant superintendent of police (media) of Rab, on Thursday.
The fugitive convict went into hiding in 2015 when a case involving the 1971 war crimes was filed against four people including him with the International Crimes Tribunal in 2014.
He faced charges of killing, mass killing, abduction, torture, torching, rape and looting in the case.
Majid, who was the head of Razakar Bahini in Purbadhala. As a membe of the auxiliary force of the occupied Pakistani military, in collaboration with his cohort, he killed freedom fighter Abdul Khaleq and his associates at the house of Khaleq at Badha village under the Purbadhala police station on August 17, 1971.
Later, their bodies were dumped into several rivers.
Though initially four people were indicted in the case later three more people were also accused in the case.

The International Crimes Tribunal handed down the death sentence to all the seven accused after completing all legal procedures in 2019.
With the 36th judgment in the case, two convicts died when the case was behind bars, two died as fugitives after the judgment was passed and the other two are still at large.

Abrar murder case: Death-row convict files plea seeking acquittal
SM Mahmud Setu, a death-row convict in Buet student Abrar Fahad murder case, filed a petition with the High Court seeking acquittal on Wednesday.
Advocate Jamiul Haque Foysal and Barrister Sharmin Akter Sheuli filed the petition with the HC bench concerned on behalf of Setu.
On December 8 last year, a Dhaka court sentenced 20 young men to death and five others to life imprisonment for killing Abrar, 21-year-old student of Buet, in October 2019.

The death references of Abrar Fahad murder case reached the High Court for examining the lower court verdict on January 6.
According to the prosecution, Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Buet, was beaten to death by Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders at Sher-e-Bangla Hall in 2019.
He was found dead on the staircase of the hall in the early hours of October 7, after he was taken to room No-2011 around 8pm on October 6 and beaten mercilessly.
Those sentenced to death are Mehedi Hassan Rasel, Muntasir Al Jemi, Tabakhkharul Islam Tanvir, Mohammad Sadat, Mizanur Rahman, Samsul Arefin Rafat, Md Shamem Billah, Mazedur Rahman, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Moniruzzaman Monir, Mehedi Hasan Robin, Muzahidur Rahman Muzahid, Anik Sarker, Meftahul Islam Zion, Ifti Mosharraf Shakal, Mahmud Setu, Morshed Amartya Islam, Morshedzamman alias Jisan, Ahtesamul Rabbi Tanim and Muztaba Rafid.

On October 7, 2019, an FIR for murder was lodged at the Chawkbazar police station against 19 people, following a complaint from Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah.
On November 13, 2019, Detective Branch (DB) inspector and investigation officer of the case Wahiduzzaman submitted a chargesheet against the 25 accused.
On September 15, 2020, the court framed charges against the accused.

Mobile phone seized from death-row convict in Kashimpur jail
Kashimpur Central Jail authorities in Gazipur have seized a mobile phone set from Nur Hossain, a death-row convict in the Narayanganj 7-murder case, and formed a 3-member panel to probe the matter.
Nur Hossain, former Narayanganj City Corporation Councillor, has been in jail since 2017 after he was sentenced to death in sensational Narayanganj seven-murder case.
Jail superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-2 Abdul Jalil on Saturday said a three-member committee, headed by Deputy Superintendent of Prisons Umme Salma, was formed to probe the incident.

There are three inmates, including Nur, 50, in the Kashimpur Central Jail part-2 condemn cell. Tipped off, the jail authorities recovered a mobile phone set after searching the cell on January 5, he said.
The other members of the committee are Chief Jailer Asadur Rahman and Deputy Jailer Nurul Mobin.
The committee has been asked to submit its report by January 11.
A court of Narayanganj on January 16, 2017 sentenced 26 people, including three sacked Rab officials and ex-city councillor Nur Hossain, to death and nine others to different jail terms in the two cases filed over the murder incident.
Narayanganj 7-murder case
On April 27, 2014, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area of Narayanganj.
At the same time, senior lawyer at the district judge court Chandan Kumar Sarkar and his driver were abducted on their way to the capital.

Three days after their abduction, the bodies of six of them, including Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya River.
The following day, the body of Nazrul's car driver, Jahangir, was recovered from the river.
