Collision involving three vehicles leaves 3 dead in B’baria
Three people were killed and 20 others were injured in a road crash involving a bus, a pick-up van and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Alinagar in Bijoynazar upazila of Brahmanbaria district on Tuesday, said police.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
The accident occurred around 6 pm, leaving three people dead on the spot and 20 others injured, said Sukhendo Ghosh, officer-in-charge of Highway Police Station.

On information, police rushed to the spot and conducted the rescue operation.
Vehicular movement on the highway came to a halt for some time following the accident.

Nor’wester lashes B’baria: 300 houses damaged
At least 300 establishments including houses were damaged as a nor’wester accompanied by hailstorm and gusty winds swept through the three upazilas of Brahmanbaria district Monday.
The storm started around 3:20 am and lasted for ten minutes.
The storm damaged 300 houses, electric poles were damaged while a number of trees were uprooted in Sarail, Nasirnagar and Bijoynagar upazilas of the district.
Besides, 40 people were injured during the storm in Nasirnagar upazila. Of them, one was undergoing treatment at Sadar hospital, said Nasirnagar Upazila officer, Avhijit Roy.

A portion of the East Balikhola Primary School building collapsed during the storm, forcing the authorities concerned to shut down the school for an indefinite period.

2 killed in B’baria road accident
Two people were killed and 2 others injured in a collision between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Akhaura upazila of Brahmanbaria district on Monday morning.
The deceased were identified as Awal Mia, 50, of Maheshpur village in Nabinagar upazila and Fayez Mia, 45, son of Hekim Bepari of the same village.
However, the identities of the injured could not be known immediately.

Md Shahjalal Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Brahmanbaria Khatihata Highway Police said the Brahmanbaria-bound truck collided with the auto- rickshaw in the morning, leaving two people dead on the spot.
The injured were rushed to a hospital, the OC added.

The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Youth held in Dhaka for abducting B’baria schoolgirl
Members of Rapid Action Battalions (Rab) on Tuesday arrested a youth from the city’s Badda area for abducting a schoolgirl in Brahmanbaria district.
The arrestee is Md Jasim Uddin, 25, son of Dhon Mia of Mondo village of Brahmanbaria.

The intelligence unit of Rab headquarters and a team of Rab-2 arrested Jasim, the mastermind of the abduction, after conducting a drive in Badda area of the capital in the morning.
On October 9, some people picked up an SSC examinee in a private car from Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila. Later, the abductors took the victim to various places and dropped her in Suhilpur area of Sadar upazila in the evening.
Victim's mother filed a case against Jasim Uddin and five others at the Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

A video of the incident went viral social media and Rab launched a drive to arrest those involved in the incident.
Jasim Uddin went into hiding in the house of a relative in Badda area.
The arrestee reportedly confessed that he had been stalking the girl for several days before abduction.

15 hurt in police-Jubo Dal men clash in B’baria
Fifteen people were injured in a clash between police and some leaders and activists of Jubo Dal at Anantapur in Kasba upazila headquarters on Monday.
Witnesses said Masudul Haque Bhuiya, convener of upaizla unit Jubo Dal, along with his supporters brought out a procession over the approval of the new committee of Kasba Upazila and Municiplaity units in the morning.

When the procession reached in front of Adra Anantapur Government Primary School police obstructed it.
At one stage, the activists of Jubo Dal threw brickbats targeting police, triggering a chase and counter-chase.
Bureau chief of eastern region ATN News, Pijush Kanti Acharya and Somoy TV photo journalist Jewelur Rahman were among the injured.

People wow at two giant bulls at a cattle farm in B’baria
Manik and Babu, two giant bulls, are drawing hundreds of curious people to the modest cattle farm of Oli Mia at Maslandapur in Nasirnagar upazila of Bramanbaria district ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice.
With less than two weeks before the second biggest religious festival of Muslims, many cattle farms in the country are brimming with the sacrificial animals.

Many people like Oli, reared cattle to sell before the Eid.
He has been in the business of rearing cattle for the last four years.
Manik and Babu are his two prized possessions at the farm.
Oli is asking a price of Tk 22 lakh for the bulls, each containing approximately 25 maunds of meat, as demand for sacrificial animals has increased ahead Eid-ul-Azha.

Father, son die from electrocution in B’baria
A man and his seven-year-old son died from electrocution at Haturabari in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria district early Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Golam Maula, 35, son of Khalek Mia and his son Zubayer.

Golam’s wife Samsunnahar was undergoing treatment at 250-bed Brahmanbaria General Hospital with injuries from electric shock.
Alamgir Bhuiya, officer-in-charge of Kasba Police Station, said Golam Mawla, a labourer, saved some money and was preparing to buy a refrigerator with the money.

The family came in contact with a live electric wire while they were shifting their steel almirah to accommodate the refrigerator around 6:30 am, leaving the father and the son dead on the spot and the mother injured, said the OC.

River erosion at Manianda in B’baria; Fear of displacement grips locals
People at Manianda union in Akhaura upazila are passing days amid fear of losing their homesteads as erosion by the Haura River in the upazila has taken a serious turn recently due to heavy rainfall and onrush of hill water.
Five dwelling houses at Tanmandail Uttar Char in Manianda union have been washed away by the river in the last ten days while 13 dwelling houses are at risk being washed away, said locals.
Humayun Kabir, a member of Manianda union, said the river erosion has taken a serious turn in Tanamandail Uttar Char due to heavy rainfall and onrush of hill water for the last ten days.
Already, Nurul Islam, Sujon Mia, Anwar Begum, Mashan Munshi and Habib Mia have lost their dwelling houses and lands while 13 more families living in the area are passing their days amid anxiety, he said.
On Tuesday, Upazila Nirbahi Officer and local representatives visited the erosion affected area. Later, a team of Brahmanbaria Water Development Board visited the area again on Wednesday and assured the residents of taking necessary steps.
Takjil Khalifa Kajol, Akhaura municipality mayor, said, “After getting information, the Law Minister has asked the local administration and officials of the Water Development Board to take effective measures.”
UNO Tahmina Akter said the authorities concerned have started work to prevent erosion and a list of the affected people was sent to the local administration for getting government assistance.

2 teenage girls’ bodies recovered in B’baria
Police recovered the hanging bodies of two teenage girls from near Kuti Post office in Kasba upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Sonia, 13, daughter of Billal Mia and Sumaiya, 14, daughter of Babul Mia of Kuti uttarpara area.
Being informed by locals, police recovered the bodies of the girls from an abandoned place in the afternoon, said Lokman Hosain, officer-in-charge of Kasba Police Station.
It is primarily suspected that the girls might have killed themselves by hanging from the tree but police are investigating the incident, said the OC.
