Fish farmers in Sunmganj are in troubled waters as the recent floods have reportedly caused a Tk 21.45 crore loss to the potential sector.

Despite bumper production of watermelon in Dakope upazila of Khulna, frustration has gripped the growers as they are fearing huge losses for lack of buyers and low prices due to coronavirus outbreak.   Farmers said watermelons are rotting in the fields as there is lack of customers at the market due to the restriction in movement imposed to stop the transmission of the deadly virus.   Huge watermelons are likely to be damaged in the fields as those are not being harvested for lack of buyers, they said.

Thousands of employees of small enterprises in the retail sector are faced with the prospect of redundancy if shops do not reopen before Eid.  

Hundreds of dairy farmers in Satkhira are counting huge losses as they have to dump over 50,000 liters of milk every day for lack of demand at every level amid the virtual lockdown in the country after the coronavirus breakout.   As the dairy farmers have no alternative source of income, particularly after this pandemic, farm owners in the district are even failing to arrange feed for their cattle.   President of Tala Milk Production Samity Dibas Chandra Ghosh said around 1,000 dairy farms in the district, including 400 at Jiala Nalta village and 50 farms in Athari village in Tala upazila, produce over 50,000 liters of milk every day.   “All the dairy farmers in the district will turn paupers if this situation continues…the milk dumping must be stopped as soon as possible for their survival,” he said.
