Gauze found in patient’s abdomen: SBMCH surgeon relieved of duty
A surgeon has been relieved of his duty at Sher-e-bangla Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH) for leaving a piece of gauze inside the abdomen of a woman during her C-section, said the hospital authorities.
The dismissed surgeon is Honorary (Unpaid) Medical Officer Dr Md Tarek. He was taking six months training in the gynecology department of the hospital.

At the same time, show-cause notices were issued against two staff nurses of the hospital who were present during the surgery, SBMCH Director Dr Saiful Islam said.
Besides, the hospital director informed the director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to take further action in this regard.
A three-member probe committee was formed on May 22 headed by Dr Nazimul Haque, head of surgery department. Khurshid Jahan, head of the gynecology department, and Dr Moniruzzaman Shaheen, assistant director of the hospital are two other members.
Surgeon Taher was relieved of duty on Saturday after the probe report was submitted.
According to hospital sources, victim Sharmin Akter Sheela, wife of Ziaul Hasan of Nalchhiti upazila in Jhalakathi district, gave birth to a baby girl on April 16 at the hospital when the surgeon left the gauze inside her abdomen during C-section.

A few days later, when Sharmin’s physical condition began to deteriorate due to an infection she was readmitted to the hospital.
Head of the surgery department of the hospital Nazimul Haque said a gauze inside Sharmin's abdomen was detected after an examination which was surgically removed on May 22.

3 tourist cops shunted out for attack on Barishal hospital nurse
Three personnel of the Barishal zone tourist police have been shunted out in connection with the attack on a nurse at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH) on Wednesday night.
The punitive action was taken against inspector Bulbul Ahmed and constables Zaved and Mehedi after a preliminary probe found them guilty, Rezaul Karim, superintendent of the Barishal region tourist police, told UNB.
The three have been attached to the Tourist Police headquarters for now, he added.

On Wednesday night, after being injured in a road accident, inspector Bulbul was rushed to the emergency department of SBMCH.
There an altercation started between him and on-duty senior nurse Saiful Islam after the latter asked the name of the patient. At one point, the inspector and the two others allegedly thrashed Saiful.
Nurses of SBMCH went on a strike on Thursday morning in protest against the attack on their colleague. They called off the strike only after the authorities assured them of action in the case.

100 oxygen cylinders missing from SBMCH: 5-member probe body formed
Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH) authorities have formed a five-member probe committee after the missing of 100 oxygen cylinders and 30 cylinder meters from the Covid unit of the hospital.
Headed by assistant director of SBMCH Dr Maniruzzaman, the other members of the committee are—assistant director Dr Mohammad Nazmul Hossain, Dr Mahmud Hossain, Store officer Anamika and health supervisor Selina Akter.

The incident of missing oxygen cylinders came to light on Saturday and later the authorities formed the body to look into the matter on Thursday..
According to the sources at the medical store, the oxygen cylinders and cylinder meters were supplied through the ward master of the corona unit and during a regular counting , the authorities detected that matter.
Selina Akter, said a staffer of the hospital, has been served a show cause notice in this regard.
Dr. HM Saiful Islam, director of SBMCH, said necessary action will be taken against those involved in the incident after getting the probe committee report.

According to the hospital sources, there have 628 oxygen cylinders at the hospital. Of these, some were provided by the government while some were donated by different organisations to tackle the Covid situation.

Covid: Barishal division logs 20 more deaths
Barishal division has logged 20 new Covid deaths in the past 24 hours, health officials said on Sunday morning.
Of the deceased, eleven were tested positive for Covid-19 while the remaining nine showed symptoms of the virus infection.

Eleven of them died at Sher-E-Bangla Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH) while the others in different hospitals, the officials said.
Divisional Health Director Dr Basudev Kumar Das said that 547 patients have died of Covid-19 in the division so far.
Besides, 479 people have tested positive for Covid in Barishal division in the past 24 hours and of , 177 alone are from Barishal district.

Some 38,296 active Covid patients have been identified in the division to date, according to the officials.
Moreover, 280 patients are currently undergoing treatment at the corona unit of SBMCH.

Cop dies at SBMCH corona unit
A police constable died at corona unit of Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) early Thursday.
Sohel Mahmud, 35, hailing from Pangasia area in Dumki upazila of Patuakhali district and a constable of Barishal Metropolitan Police, died around 12:15am, said Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station.
Sohel, who had diabetics and previous record of breathing problem, was taken to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon after he fell sick.
Doctor Bakir Hosssain, director of the hospital, said his samples were collected for test.
