The High Court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence of a man in connection with the killing of a child after abduction in 2010 in Gaibandha district. The HC bench of Justice ANM Bashir Ullah and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam upheld death sentence of Zahid, son of Siddique Mia of Gaibandha district, after hearing the appeal petition. The HC also acquitted two more accused—Pavel, son of Majibur Rahman and Rubel, son of Biltu Mia of Pirgachha village—of  the charges. Advocate SM Shahjahan and AK Khan Ujjal stood for the accused while deputy attorney general Sujit Chatarji Bappi represented the state. According to the prosecution, the three accused abducted Tasin Mia alias Arnab, 5, grandson of Nazrul Islam Madhu of Pirgachha village in Sadar upazila on July 27, 2010. Later, they made a phone call to Tasin’s mother and demanded Tk 10 lakh as ransom for his release. Failing to realise the ransom money, the accused strangulated Tasin to death and dumped the body into a pond. Father of Tasin lodged a complaint against ten people with Sadar Police the following day. On January 26, 2017, Gaibandha Woman and Child Repression Tribunal Judge Ratneshwar Bhattacharya sentenced three people to death in the case and acquitted seven others as allegations brought against them could not be proved. The accused filed petitions against the lower court judgment.

A Noakhali court on Thursday placed four people in 5-day police remand each in a case filed over shooting a 4-year old dead while she was on her father’s lap in Begumganj upazila. Senior Judicial Magistrate of Chief Judicial Magistrate court Towhidul Islam passed the order after investigation officer in the case appealed for 7-day in remand for each five accused. The remanded accused are- Sujon, Sohel Uddin, Naimul Islam and Akbar Hossain. On Tuesday the case filed over killing Tasfia Aktar Jannat was handed over to Detective Branch (DB) of police for further investigation. On Tuesday night, a team of Rab Battalion 11 arrested the five accused during a drive at Char Clark union in Subarnachar upazila. On April 13, Mowlana Abu Jaher and his daughter suffered bullet wounds fired by a group of 20 people allegedly led by Rimon, Mohin , Naim , Akbar at a shop near his house at Hajipur union in the upazila. The group attacked the shop owner Abdullah Al over a feud regarding soil excavation but Jaher and Tasfia had no involvement in it. Also read: Khulna: 10 suspected militants remanded in police custody for 5 days Next day, Tasfia’s uncle Humayun Kabir filed a case against 17 people including Rimon and Badshah along with some 11 more anonymous people. So far, law enforcers managed to arrest nine of the accused in this case.

Police on Wednesday recovered the decomposed body of a child from a pond near Madbar Bazar in Jalkuri Taltola area of Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj. The deceased was identified as Riyad (7), son of Raju, a mason in Moonlight area of Siddhirganj After the child went missing, his father filed a case against the child’s uncle Sujon, who was arrested. During interrogation, he confessed that he had killed the child for ransom money and hidden the dead body in a pond. According to his information police recovered the body on Wednesday morning.    Riyad, the child had been missing since April 24. His father said, “On the afternoon he (Riyad) went missing, my brother-in-law Sujan took my two sons to the shop to buy cakes. Though my two sons came back home, my eldest son Riyad left the house again. He has been missing since then." On April 28, Riyad’s father got an unknown phone call asking for Tk 1.5 lac ransom money for Riyad.   He suspected it was Sujon’s voice and immediately informed the police. Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police Md Mehedi Imran Siddiqui said Sujan was arrested in connection to this case by tracking the phone which he called with. “An investigation is underway to find out whether anyone else was involved in the murder,” he said. Md. Idris, a neighbor of Sujan said Sujan was often involved in crimes- thefts and robberies were common incidents for him.

A teenager told a court in Panchagarh on Monday that he kidnapped and murdered a child for Tk 20,000 to buy a mobile phone at Nayekpara village of Debiganj upazila.

Parents and relatives of an 11-year-old child planned her death for Tk 30 lakh and killed her by slitting her throat in Narsingdi Sadar upazila in 2015, revealed  an investigation of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday.
