Garment factory closure sparks protests in Gazipur
Workers of a garment factory staged a demonstration in front of PN Composite Ltd at Ambagh in Konabari, Gazipur on Tuesday (December 09, 2025), protesting the sudden closure of the factory.
“The authorities hung a closure notice on the main gate on Monday evening. When workers arrived for duty on Tuesday morning and saw the notice, they immediately began protesting,” said Khandaker Jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Konabari Police Station.
According to workers, the unrest began after an employee left the factory on December 7 for urgent personal reasons.
Upon his return, he engaged in a verbal altercation with several factory officials.

On Monday, a group of workers demonstrated demanding the removal of some officials involved in the dispute.
Despite repeated efforts by the factory management to calm the situation, tensions persisted throughout the day.
After workers dispersed in the evening, the management decided to close the factory and placed the notice on the main gate.
Industrial police and local law enforcement rushed to the spot upon receiving information and brought the situation under control.
Workers eventually left the area around 9 am following assurances that production would resume next week.
When contacted, factory manager Tapas said a misunderstanding had arisen between a worker and officials, prompting workers to stop work.

Despite several attempts to resolve the issue, production remained disrupted on Monday, leading the authorities to temporarily shut down the factory.

RMG workers in Gazipur demonstrate for wages set by govt, gridlock on Dhaka-Tangail highway
Gridlock was formed as vehicular movement on Dhaka-Tangail highway remained suspended for over an hour due to workers of garment factories demonstrating in Gazipur’s Konabari area, demanding payment of salaries as per the wages set by the government.
Mohammad Ziaul Islam, officer-in-charge of Konabari Police Station, said workers of garment factories in the Konabari area took to the street around 8 am to press home their six-point demand including payment of salary as per the government-announced wage structure.

The other demands include an eight-hour workday instead of ten hours.
A long tailback has been created on both sides of the Dhaka-Tangail highway following the demonstration.
However, vehicular movement normalised as police drove the demonstrating workers away from the highway after assuring them of taking steps regarding their demands.

Murder accused killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’
A murder accused was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion in Konabari area of the city early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Jewel Ahmed Sabuj, son of Rafiq Ullah, hailing from Podipara area in Begumganj upazila.
Company Commander Abdullah AL Mamun of Rab-1, said that on April 29 Sabuj , who was a tenant of Farhad’s house, abducted his minor boy Alif Hossain along with his associate Sagor and demanded Tk 20lakh grom his family as ransom.
Later, Rab arrested Sagor from Pubail area on Saturday evening.
According to information gleaned from Sagor, police recovered the body of the boy from a warehouse on the second floor of a house on Saturday night.
When, the Rab team conducted a drive in the area to arrest Sabuj around 2am, Sabuj opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self defence, triggering the gunfight, said the Rab offiical.
After the gunfight, they recovered his body from the spot.
Some Rab personnel were also injured, said the official adding that a foreign made pistol and bullet were recovered from the spot.
