The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Tuesday approved a Tk 5,905.59-crore project to maintain the rural road network by rehabilitating the roads, bridges and culverts destroyed by cyclone Amphan, excessive rains and floods.

The tragedy of cyclones and consequent floods and embankment damage is an annual saga in Bangladesh. This year was no exception.

Educational institutions damaged in Jashore during cyclone Amphan are yet to be repaired nearly three months after the natural disaster hit the country on May 20.

More than 2.4 million people are estimated to be affected by flooding, including around 1.3 million children in Bangladesh, UNICEF said Thursday.

The traditional Basundia jackfruit haat in Jashore from where thousands of jackfruits go to different districts every season now looks almost deserted for lack of buyers and the blame goes to Covid-19 pandemic and cyclone Amphan.

The UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated US$ 5 million to complement the government’s response to the people in need. 

Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK Saida Muna Tasneem has called upon the United Kingdom to be the voice and conscience of the most vulnerable countries including the LDCs, SIDs and countries with special needs, and ensure equitable and affordable access to vaccines and therapeutics manufactured by the UK and other developed countries. 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina jointly with CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation Patrick Verkooijen wrote an article in The Guardian saying that Bangladesh can offer lessons for others facing the dangers like super cyclone Amphan and COVID-19.
