A 30-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur district on Friday, officials said. The tragedy occurred around 5pm on Friday in the Katabari Daodhara area of the upazila. The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Alam, son of Abdul Karim, UP member of Ward No. 2 of Nayabil Union. REad: Teen girl dies after truck overturns in Ctg "Shafiqul was attacked by the wild elephant while going to see a herd of elephants coming from a nearby jungle," said Rafiqul Islam, Madhutila Range officer of the Forest Department. "He was killed on the spot." Later, locals recovered Shafiqul's body when the herd of wild elephants left the spot, he added. According to the forest officials and locals, four people have been killed in wild elephant attacks in the Nalitabari and Jhenaigati upazilas of Sherpur in the last eight months.  

A 65-year-old farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur district on Tuesday, police said on Wednesday. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Patrachhila Mayaghasi hill area of the upazila. "He was killed on the spot." When he did not return home even after sunset, his family members launched a search operation and spotted his body. "We were subsequently informed," the OC said.

A 70-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in her lemon garden at Joldi union in Chattogram's Banshkhali Friday. The deceased was identified as Nure Ayesha and the incident took place when the victim went to pick lemons from her garden in the Jangal Joldi area of the upazila, Banshkhali Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector Mubarak Hossain said. Ayesha was critically injured when the elephant attacked her; when locals rushed her to Banshkhali Health Complex, she was declared dead, Mubarak added. Ayesha was trampled to death by an elephant when she went to her lemon garden to pick lemons from the area." The elephant is a "critically endangered" species in Bangladesh, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. Faced with shrinking forest cover and human encroachment of their corridors, wild elephants are under serious threat in southeast Bangladesh. Also, ever-increasing deforestation in the hills is leading to a crisis of food and habitat for wild animals, making the elephants venture into human settlements in search of food and attack those who try to stop them.

A woman was killed in an attack by a wild elephant at Dongnala of Rangamati's Kaptai upazila on Sunday morning.
