Super cyclone Amphan, pronounced as "Um-pun", means sky. The name  was given by Thailand in 2004, years ago.

The coastal district of Khulna was battered by heavy rainfall and wind with the speed of up to 71kph as super cyclone Amphan started crossing the region on Wednesday evening.

Local administrations in Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts have evacuated 4 lakh people until Wednesday noon, just a few hours ahead of Super Cyclone Amphan’s landfall.

Some 50 multipurpose cyclone shelters have been prepared and 256 cyclone preparation programme volunteer units provided cyclone early warning system messages to the community in Rohingya camp as cyclone Amphan is unlikely to hit Cox's Bazar district.

As Cyclone ‘Amphan’ is approaching fast, the district administration of Satkhira has taken all the necessary preparations to tackle the super cyclone in addition to evacuating thousands of vulnerable people.

Super Cyclone ‘Amphan’ is set to make landfall on the coast this afternoon or evening, with 200 kph to 220 kph wind speeds at its centre.
