5 factories among 1278 closed in Savar, Ashulia, Gazipur

Only five garment factories out of 1278 in Savar, Ashulia, Gazipur are closed on Monday. There have been no significant disruptions in the garment industry in the major hubs including Savar, Ashulia, Narayanganj, and Gazipur, according to a government source. Only three factories out of a total of 407 in Savar and Ashulia areas remain closed while in Gazipur, two factories out of 871 are closed. Owners are free to close their garment factories until vandalism ends: BGMEA

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan on Sunday (November 12, 2023) said the owners of the RMG units can keep their factories closed under the law to protect industry and property until the vandalism is stopped and law enforcement agencies are able to ensure adequate security. “Every entrepreneur has a constitutional right to protect his own industry and properties from outsiders,” he told a media briefing at BGMEA office at Uttara. The BGMEA chief repeated that for the sake of the country and the industry, to protect the employment of the worker siblings, if the working brothers and sisters do not work in any factory, leave the factory without working, vandalize the factory, then the factory authorities can keep the factory closed under section 13 (1) of the Labor Act. Garment workers’ protest: 130 factories in Ashulia, Savar, Dhamrai closed Faruque said as there is currently less work in many factories in the garment sector, buyers have stopped placing new orders; they have asked to stop new recruitment. “New appointments will be made when the situation improves,” said the BGMEA president. Faruque urged the government of Bangladesh to identify those who are plotting against this industry and take action. The government on Tuesday announced Tk 12,500 as minimum wage for entry level RMG workers, raising it by 56.25% from the existing one. State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian announced the new wage structure for RMG workers which will be effective from December 1. RMG workers unions have rejected the offer and instead asked for an increase of nearly Tk 23,000 a month. Many workers resorted to street protests clashing with police and vandalizing factories. Owners have announced indefinite shutdown of over 130 factories mainly in Gazipur and Ashulia areas. 17 deaths in Jhalakathi accident: Bus driver had a license for light vehicles, RAB says

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the driver of the bus “responsible for the deaths of 17 people” in Jhalakathi, from Ashulia in Savar early today (July 26, 2023). The arrestee was identified as Mohon Khan, 40. Based on information, a team of RAB-8 conducted a drive in Ashulia and arrested Mohon at the dead of night, said RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director Khandaker Al Moin this morning. 17 die as bus plunges into pond in Jhalakathi; 35 injured Moin said that Mohon used to drive heavy vehicles despite being issued a license for driving light vehicles. Young couple found dead in Ashulia

A young couple's bodies were found hanging in a house in Nischintapur in Ashulia of Savar, on the outskirts of the capital on Tuesday. The deceased were identified as Saidul Mandal, 32, son of Samad Mandal, and his wife Shahnaz Parvin Babita, 24, of Naogaon district. Quoting local people, police said Saidul is an expatriate and his wife Babita used to work at a garment factory. They were tenants of a tin-roof house, owned by one Shahsul Haque. READ: 6 RAB fakers held from Savar Local people spotted the hanging bodies of the couple and informed police who recovered the bodies and sent them to Dhaka Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, said Kazi Naser, sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station. Primarily, police suspected that the couple committed suicide over family matters. “The actual reason behind the death will be known after getting autopsy report,” said SI Kazi Naser.
