RAB rescues infant girl abducted from Azimpur during robbery
The eight-month-old infant, who was abducted during a robbery at a house in Dhaka’s Azimpur area on Friday, has been rescued by the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) from the capital’s Mohammadpur area.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rab conducted a drive in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area and rescued the baby early Saturday, said a source at Rab headquarters.
The elite force also arrested one suspect in this connection.
Earlier on Friday, robbers swooped into the house located in Medical Staff Quarters of Azimpur area and looted valuables including cash money from the house.
They also abducted the baby while fleeing with the booty.
Infant abducted after robbery in Dhaka’s Azimpur
Police said a woman had moved into the flat of Farzana Akhter as a sublet tenant the previous day.
On Friday morning, two men, posing as the woman’s brothers, arrived and looted valuables including Tk 1.5 lakh in cash and four tolas of gold ornaments from the house after keeping Farzana hostage.
Farzana, a resident of the staff quarters and an employee of the Ministry of Home Affairs, lives in the flat with her husband and child.

‘Attempted robbery’ at Rampal Power Plant: 5 security personnel injured
Five security personnel, including two Ansar members, at the Rampal Coal-Fired Thermal Power Plant sustained injuries following a “robbery attempt” by a group of assailants on Wednesday night.
The injured are Akram, Saidul Islam, Mintu Bouragi, Brazen Mandal and Habi Kamal Pasha.
The power plant’s Deputy General Manager Anwarul Azim said approximately 50-60 armed individuals attempted to infiltrate residential areas of the power plant around 11:30 pm.
When the security personnel tried to thwart their entry, the armed men attacked them, resulting in injuries.
Of the injured, two were urgently transported to Khulna Medical College and Hospital for medical attention, while the remaining three received treatment at the Rampal Upazila Health Complex, said the DGM.
Somen Das, the officer-in-charge of Rampal Police Station, confirmed that law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the culprits. As a precautionary measure, additional police forces have been deployed to secure the power plant and its surrounding areas, aiming to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of the plant's personnel and infrastructure.
Bagerhat Superintendent of Police (SP) Abul Hasnat Khan said the Ansar members of the power plant opened 30 rounds of bullets to deter the robbers.
In the firing one of the robbers sustained injuries, he said, adding that they have already arrested 11suspects.
The arrestees are being interrogated at Rampal police station and drives are on to arrest others, the SP said.

FBI announces $20,000 reward for information on Bangladesh-origin man
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest of Bangladesh-origin Ruhel Choudhury.
Ruhel has ties to the Hollis, Queens Village, and Jamaica areas of Queens, New York. He may transport and sell used cars, according to the FBI.
Ruhel Choudhury is wanted for his alleged involvement in two kidnappings that occurred on March 27, 2023, and May 11, 2023, in Queens, New York.

He and others allegedly abducted the victims off the street and then robbed, tortured, and drugged them.
One victim was held for ransom and sexually assaulted.
Ruhel allegedly provided and drove the vehicles used to confine and transport the victims to various locations in Queens during the kidnappings.
He also allegedly assaulted and threatened the victims. Ruhel was indicted in the United States District Court, Eastern District of New York, Brooklyn, New York, and a federal warrant was issued for his arrest on January 9, 2024, after he was charged with two counts of kidnapping and two counts of kidnapping conspiracy.

80 tola of gold looted from 3 Savar jewellery shops
Robbers looted 80 tola of gold from three jewellery shops at Hemayetpur in Savar early today (November 22, 2023).
Dipak Chandra Saha, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, said a group of masked robbers, with the help of three security guards, stormed three jewellery shops at Lalon Tower and Shopping Complex near Hemayetpur bus stand and looted 42 tola of gold from Sonakkhi Jewellers, 35 tola from Mamata Jewellers, and 3 tola from Gitanjali Jewellers.
The incident came to light this morning after the market was opened.

In another incident, robbers also looted mobile phone sets worth Tk 20 lakh from seven mobile phone shops in Savar Bazar bus stand.

Tk 14 lakh looted from Rajshahi Agricultural Development Bank
Tk 14 lakh have allegedly been looted from the vault of Kochashohor branch of Rajshahi Agricultural Development Bank in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha district early Sunday.
Jesmine Akhter, manager of Kochashohor branch of the bank, said some robbers entered the bank after tying up the security guard of the bank at the dead night and looted the money from the vault.
Izar uddin, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Police Station, said there was no sign of breaking open any lock of bank but the money was found missing.
“However, police are investigating the incident,” he said.
The security guard was asleep when the crime was committed, he added.

6 arrested for ‘posing as doctors, nurses and robbing homes’, says DMP
Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested 6 members of an alleged gang of robbers, including its leader, from different areas of the capital on Wednesday (April 05, 2023).
According to DMP, the arrestees used to pose as doctors and nurses by wearing aprons, masks and ID cards and rob people’s houses across Dhaka.
Faruk Hossain, deputy commissioner of DMP’s media wing, said that six laptops, 10 mobile phones and 2 bags were recovered during the raid.

The arrestees were identified as: Afsana Akter Esha alias Mim (22), Tonmoy Biswas (30), Swapon Sheikh (45), Nurul Islam (27), Kolim Uddin Kalu alias Koliullah (40), and Md. Mokhlesur Rahman (51).
According to DMP, a team from Gulshan Police Station arrested Afsana Akter Esha alias Mim, the alleged ringleader of the gang, from Gulshan area on Wednesday. Later, Gulshan police conducted special raids across different areas of the capital based on information provided by Afsana and arrested 5 of her “accomplices”.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that the arrestees were active members of an organized gang of robbers, DMP said.

A total of 14 cases had been filed and two warrants had been issued against the arrestees at different police stations, including Gulshan.

Tk 11 crore robbery: Mastermind among 3 held with Tk 58 lakh
An intelligence team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested three more people including the mastermind, from Dhaka and Netrakona districts in connection with the robbery of Tk 11.25 crore of a bank from a private security agency’s vehicle in Turag area of Uttara in the capital.
They also recovered Tk 58.7 lakh from thir possession.
The arrestees are Mohammad Hridoy, 21, Mohammad Milon Mia, 29 and Akash, the mastermind of the robbery incident.
Tipped off, a team of intelligence team of DMP conducted separate drives in Karail slum of Banani area in the capital and Durgapur upazila of Netrakona district and arrested them, said a press release issued by deputy commissioner of police (media and public relations) of DMP, Faruk Hossain.
With this, 11 people have been arrested and Tk 7.1 crore recovered so far.

During interrogation, it was known that, among the robbers, Akash and Sohel Rana made the plot of the robbery incident and a number of people divided into different groups committed the robbery, the release added.
Sohel Rana, now fugitive, was a driver of Money Plant Link Limited, a private security agency, and he knew well about the movement of the vehicle.
The robber gang took the control of the vehicle on that day without any obstruction, it said.
During interrogation, police came to know that the members of the gang were collected from Sunamganj, Sylhet, Netrakona, Gopalganj and Barishal. After the robbery, they took their share and managed to flee the scene, the release said.
Akash and Sohel took a lion share of the money.
Robbers looted cash money worth Tk 11 crore cash from a vehicle of Money Plant Ltd while it was going to refill money at the ATM of Dutch Bangla Bank in Savar, in Turag area of Uttara in the capital.
Earlier, on Saturday, the intelligence teams recovered over Tk 2.53 core more and arrested eight people from Dhaka, its adjacent areas and Sunamganj.
A private car, used in the robbery, has also been seized, it said.

6 get life term for murder during robbery in Kushtia
A Kushtia court on Wednesday sentenced six people to life term imprisonment for killing a man during a robbery in Daulatdia upazila of the district over 20 years back.
Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge Court Md Tajul Islam also fined the convicts Tk 25,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more imprisonment, said Anup Kumar Nandy, public prosecutor of the court.

The convicts are Swapon, Naharul, Mokbul, Shafi, Shahjahan, and Ajmal, all are residents of the upazila.
The court also acquitted eight other people as the allegations brought against them could not be proved, the lawyer said.
Of them, Swapon, Mokbul and Naharul were tried in absentia.
According to the case statement, a group of robbers equipped with lethal weapons committed robbery at the house of one Shahjahan Ali in Philipnagar village under the upazila on April 27, 2002.
The robbers killed Shahjahan Ali when he tried to resist the robbers while they were fleeing with valuables.

78-year-old killed in Old Dhaka house 'robbery'
A 78-year-old man was reportedly killed by robbers at his residence in Old Dhaka's Chawkbazar.
According to Mansur Ahmed's son Sarwar Ahmed, his father was found in a pool of blood with his hands and legs tied inside his home on the second floor of his six-storey building in Khaje Dewan Road Thursday midnight.
Mansur was whisked off to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Earlier, at 9pm, Sarwar and other members of Mansur's family went to a wedding ceremony, but the 78-year-old stayed home because he was not feeling well.
Returning home at midnight, Sarwar and others found the door to Mansur's flat locked. As they broke open the door only to find a bloodied Mansur on the floor.
Sarwar said the robbers injected his father with some drug before looting the house, and he later died from a serious injury to the head.
"Everything was ransacked; all the cash and gold stored in the house were looted," he said but could not provide the exact amount.
"We are investigating the incident and the body has been kept at a hospital morgue for autopsy," Abdul Qayum, officer-in-charge of Chawkbazar Police Station, said.

Five members of robbery gang arrested in Narayanganj: Police
Police say they have arrested five members of an inter-district robbery gang while they were preparing to rob a power sub-station in Golakandail area under Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj.
Among the five arrested, four are from Chattogram and one is from Cumilla. Police said that all of them are involved with a Chattogram-based robbery gang and there are numerous cases pending against them with different police stations across the country.
According to Sheikh Billal Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police of Narayanganj district, a 15-member robbery gang was preparing to break into a 400/230kv power sub-station operated under Power Grid of Bangladesh with locally-made weapons on Sunday night.

“Upon receiving the information, police conducted a drive and cordoned off the power sub-station. Although most of the robbers fled, police were able to arrest five of them from the spot. Besides, a truck used in robbery was also seized,” said Billal.
Billal added that a case was filed with Rupganj police station in this regard and the arrestees were produced before the court on Monday.
