Sinha murder case: OC Pradeep & Liakat appeal to HC for acquittal
Pradeep Kumar Das and Liakat Ali, two former police officials sentenced to death for the murder of Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan (retired), have appealed to the High Court seeking acquittal.
Pradeep's lawyer Advocate Rana Dasgupta said on Tuesday that he has appealed to the office concerned of the High Court on Monday.
The acquittal of Pradeep and Liakat from the death sentence given by the lower court has been sought in the appeal, he added.

A Cox’s Bazar court on January 31 sentenced former OC Pradeep and ex-inspector Liakat to death and six others to life imprisonment in the Major Sinha murder case.
District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail pronounced the judgment in the presence of all the 15 accused, said Public Prosecutor Faridul Alam.
The court had, however, acquitted seven other accused in the case.
The death references of the murder case reached the High Court on February 8.
On February 9, Pradeep and Liakat were shifted to Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur.
Sinha murder
On July 31, 2020, Major Sinha was shot dead at the Shamlapur police check post in Baharchhara Union of Cox's Bazar while he was returning to the town after filming for a documentary.

On August 5, 2020, Sinha's sister, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, moved the Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court accusing nine members of law enforcement agencies of the murder, including former officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das and Baharchhara Police Outpost inspector Liakat Ali.
On December 13 the same year, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) submitted a charge-sheet against 15 people, including ex-OC Pradeep, police informer Ayaz and three APBn members, in the case.
On June 27, 2021, the court framed charges against them.

Judge’s observation: Active role of OC Pradeep, 2 others proved over killing Sinha
Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail on Monday observed that the killing of Maj (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was premeditated.
His observation came before delivering judgment in the sensational murder of the retired major at a police check post in Teknaf on July 31, 2020."I have tried to find out the details of the Major Sinha murder", he said. “Three members of APBN were in charge. The trio first released Sinha's car after stopping it, but the police stopped it again and shot him within 10 to 20 minutes".

Liaquat admitted to shooting Sinha thinking he had a pistol in his hand. Eventually OC Pradeep reached the spot and kicked the left side of Sinha's chest.Similarly, in the statement of SI Nanda Dulal Rakshita proved that he played an active role in the murder.Earlier in the day, the judgment of Sinha murder case was read out at a Cox's Bazar court in presence of 15 accused in the case.The accused were brought to the court from Cox's Bazar district jail at 2 pm on Monday.Judge Mohammad Ismail started to read out the judgment when the accused were produced before the court, said Public Prosecutor Faridul Alam.Of the 15 accused, 12 gave confessional statements before court during the trial except ex-OC Pradeep Kumar Das, Constable Sagar Dev and Rubel Sharma.

Sinha murder trial: Third day of trial concludes with Sifat's testimony
The third day of testimonial statements in the murder case of Maj. (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan concluded at Cox’s Bazar court Wednesday. The court adjourned at around 6:30 pm with Shahedul Islam Sifat's testimony and interrogation.
In the three-day testimonial statements recording August 23 to 25, plaintiff Sharmin Sahariya Ferdous, sister of Sinha, and witness Shahedul Islam Sifat’s testimony were recorded.

The court on Wednesday ordered testimony of other witnesses of this case to record on September 5 to 8.
Fifteen accused of the murder case were presented to the court under intense security. Additional police were deployed after pictures of OC Pradeep talking on a mobile phone in the courtroom spread through social media in the morning.
Meanwhile, three policemen were suspended for their negligence in duty at the court after the photos raised questions about the court security. By afternoon a probe committee was formed in this regard.
During this time, various organizations formed human chain in front of the Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner's Office demanding a fair trial for Sinha's murder.
Public prosecutor advocate Faridul Alam, said after the three-day testimonial recording the court has announced September 5 to 8, four days for the testimony of the remaining witnesses.

While leaving the court premises in the evening, witness Shahedul Islam Sifat told reporters that Sinha was the victim of a premeditated murder. “Hopefully the court will do justice.,” he said.

Sinha murder case trial: Court records testimonial statements for 2nd day
On the second day of recording statements of the witnesses in the Maj. (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan murder case trial, the second witness, Sifat gave testimonial statement before a Cox’s Bazar court Tuesday.
The court was adjourned at 8pm and on Wednesday it will continue recording statement of Sifat and defense lawyers will cross-question him, said public prosecutor advocate Faridul Alam.
Recording statement of the second witness started in the afternoon after plaintiff Sharmin Shahria’s statement was cross-questioned by three defense lawyers including the lawyers of accused suspended OC Pradeep and Inspector Liakat Ali.
On Monday, the trial proceedings of the sensational murder case began with recording the testimonial statement of Sinha’s sister and plaintiff of the case Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous. Thirteen lawyers representing the defendants questioned her.

After completing the recording the statement of Sharmin, the court today was supposed to record statements of other five witnesses but due to shortage of time it couldn’t, said public prosecutor Faridul Alam.
All the 15 accused in the case were presented before the court during the trial today.

Graft case: Court orders confiscating properties of Ex-OC Pradeep, wife
A court here on Tuesday asked the deputy commissioners of Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram to confiscate the assets of ex-OC of Teknaf Model Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das and his wife in a graft case.
Chattogram Metropolitan Session Judge Sheikh Ashfaque Rahman passed the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC filed the case against sacked OC Pradeep, now in jail in Major(retd) Sinha murder case, and his wife for amassing wealth worth Tk 4 crore on August 23.

Emran Hossain, court inspector, said the court ordered to confiscate the assets Pradeep and his wife and appoint a receiver.
However, Chumki Karon, wife of Pradeep, remained absconding since Pradeep’s arrest in the Maj. (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan murder case.
ACC sources said the anti-graft watchdog’s investigation against Pradeep started in 2018.
On April 20 last year, Pradeep and his wife were asked to submit their wealth statement and they submitted their wealth statements in June that year.

After a long investigation, the ACC reportedly found information that the couple acquired assets worth more than Tk 4 crore illegally.
Sinha was killed in police firing at Baharchhara police check-post on July 31. His elder sister Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous filed a case at Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on August 5.
Ex-OC Pradeep surrendered the following day.

HC refuses bail to another 3 accused in Sinha murder case
The High Court on Monday rejected bail to another three accused in the Maj. (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan murder case on grounds that the petitions were not filed before it.
The order was issued by a bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim.
The three accused who sought bail are: Shahjahan Ali, Razib Hossain and Abdullah Al Mahmud.
Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed and deputy attorney general Sujit Chatarjee Bappi represented the state while Advocate Mahbubur Rahman stood for the petitioners.
A Cox’s Bazar court on June 27 framed charges against 15 accused, including suspended Teknaf police station officer-in-charge Pradeep Kumar Das, in the murder case.
The court also fixed July 26, 27 and 28 for recording testimonies of witnesses, said Public Prosecutor of Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Court Faridul Alam.
It also rejected bail petitions of another six accused, including ex-OC Pradeep and constable Sagar Dev.

Former officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf Model Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das and four other policemen have been made accused in another murder case filed by a woman with a Chattogram court on Wednesday.
