Bangladesh mission in Washington observes birth anniversary of Bangamata
The Embassy of Bangladesh in Washington DC has observed the 92nd birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatun Nesa Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, recalling Bangamata's great sacrifice and dedication to her family, society and the nation.
The Embassy organised different programmes at the Bangabandhu Auditorium on the occasion on Monday.
Messages from the President and the Prime Minister on the occasion were read out by Defence Attaché Brigadier General Md Shahedul Islam and Minister (Political) Dewan Ali Ashraf.
Later, a discussion session was held, which was presided over by M Shahidul Islam, Ambassdor of Bangladesh to the United States, and participated by Senior Secretary of the Defence Ministry of Bangladesh Golam Md Hashibul Alam as the guest of honor.

Defence Secretary Hashibul Alam paid tributes to Bangamata and remembered Bangamata’s role as the life partner of the Father of the Nation, as well as her contribution to the liberation struggle of Bangladesh.
Ambassador Islam highlighted Bangamata's tremendous sacrifice and dedication to her family, society and nation as well as her influence in the life of Bangabandhu, and her behind-the-scene but pivotal role in determining the course of the history of Bangladesh.
Eminent journalist and newscaster Roquia Haidar, Deputy Chief of Mission Ferdousi Shahriar and Counsellor Arifa Rahman Ruma also spoke on the occasion.
Counsellor and Head of Chancery Md Mahmudul Islam conducted the programmes.
After the discussion, a documentary on the life and works of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatun Nesa Mujib was screened.
A special prayer was offered, seeking eternal peace for departed souls of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangamata Fazilatun Nesa Mujib, their family members, and others martyred on the fateful night of 15 August 1975.
Earlier, the Defence Secretary and the Ambassador placed a floral wreath at the portrait of Bangamata Fazilatun Nesa Mujib to pay their homage. Senior officers of the Embassy were present on the occasion.

Cultural organisations observe Bangamata’s 92nd birth anniversary
Observing the 92nd birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, cultural organisations arranged several events on Monday, shedding spotlight on her eventful life and contributions towards the nation.
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs and several cultural organizations namely Bangla Academy, Bangladesh National Museum, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and others organized seminars and cultural programmes, marking the occasion.
State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid paid tribute by placing wreaths at Bangamata's mausoleum at Banani Graveyard in the capital in the morning, on behalf of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
Bangla Academy organised a special seminar and book launching event in the afternoon at its AKSB auditorium. State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid joined the event as the chief guest, and the event was presided over by Bangla Academy President Selina Hossain.
At the event, the academy’s newest publication titled ‘Bangajatimata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib: 92 tomo Jonmobarshikir Shroddha’ (Mother of the Nation Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib: Tribute to the 92nd Birth Anniversary) was launched by the chief guest.

Poet Asad Mannan and Deputy Director of the Department of Culture in Bangla Academy poet Saymon Zakaria discussed on two other books written on the life and works of Bangamata titled ‘Chhotoder Bangamata’ (Bangamata for Children) and ‘Amar Renu’ (My Renu), written by Anwara Syed Haq.
The state minister later spoke as the chief guest in the evening at the commemorative lecture titled 'Mijib theke Jatir Pita: Bangamatar Obodan’ (From Mujib to the Father of the Nation: Contribution of Bangamata), organized by Bangladesh National Museum at its Poet Sufia Kamal Auditorium of the Bangladesh National Museum in the capital.
Chaired by the Chairman of the museum council Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, the event was also joined by Cultural Affairs Secretary Md Abul Monsur as the special guest, while Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum Curator Nazrul Islam Khan joined as the keynote speaker.
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) organized a commemorative cultural event titled ‘Shilper Aloy Shroddhanjali: Uthsarga Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib’ at its Music and Dance auditorium in the evening.
Eminent novelist and Bangla Academy President Selina Hossain joined the event as the main discussant, and the event was chaired by BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky.
The event also featured cultural performances including poetry and dance recitals, instrumental tributes and musical; performances by several noted artists, pouring befitting tribute to the occasion.

PM: Bangabandhu was lucky to have Bangamata as his life partner
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was fortunate enough to have Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib as his life partner who provided him immense strength to work for the independence of the country and welfare of the people.
“It had been the good luck for my father that he got my mother as a life partner beside him,” she told a programme held to mark the birth anniversary of Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib. She also distributed Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Padak-2022 at the function.
Hasina is the eldest child of Bangabandhu and Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib. Both her parents were assassinated along with most members of the family during the August 15 carnage in 1975 at their residence on Dhanmandi Road 32.
She also paid tribute to her grandfather and grandmother for allowing their son (Bangabandhu) the freedom to work for the country from his early days. Her grandparents had never demanded anything from their son, she said.
“It was easy for my father to devote fully to the struggle for achieving independence of the country as he got such wonderful life partner and parents beside him,” she said.

Hasina said it would have been very tough for Bangabandhu to work for the country and give full concentration in politics had he not been blessed with a life partner like her mother.
“…if she had nagged her husband all the time pressing for various demands, it would have been a tough job for my father,” she said.
She said that her mother never insisted on getting anything from her husband.
The PM said that her mother had been gifted with an unusual mental strength to face any problem with courage and adjust her life with difficult situation.
She further said her mother also brought them up in that way and taught her children to face hostile situation with courage.
Hasina also said that the political decisions that her mother had made proved helpful for the country’s independence movement.
“My mother’s attention was on everything that was for the good of country and its people,” she said.
In this regard she mentioned some anecdotes that occurred before and after the independence of Bangladesh.
“My mother was confident that the country will get its independence and this conviction of my mother was very much helpful for my father,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said that her mother had given everything for the country till her last breath.
“On august 15, she did not beg for her life. She rather sacrificed her life,” she said.

Hasina asked the women of the country to be imbibed with Bangamata’s ideology that teaches that desire, pleasure and luxury should not be only purpose of one’s life.
“I will call upon the women of the country to be imbibed with the spirit of sacrifice and work for the welfare of the people,” she said.
Noted writer Anwara Syed Haq presented the keynote paper on the life and sacrifices of Bangamata.
Syeda Zebunnesa Haque, who spoke from among the awardees, said she was deeply touched to have received the honour.
State Minister for Women and Child Affairs Fazilatun Nessa Indira, Jatiyo Mohila Sangstha Chairman Begum Chemon Ara Tayab and Women and Child Affairs secretary Md. Hasanuzzaman Kallol also spoke at the programme.
A documentary on the Bangamata was screen at the programme.
The PM also distributed Tk 2000 each to 2500 insolvent women across the country through mobile banking system.
Of the amount, Tk 13 lakh was distributed among the women in flood-hit Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Netrokona districts.
She also distributed some 4500 swing machines among distressed women across the country.
She also unveiled the cover of a book written by her titled ‘Sheikh Fazilatunnesa: Amar Maa’ (Sheikh Fazilatunnesa: My Mother).
Sheikh Hasina also opened a women's hostel named after Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib in the capital.

Bangamata’s 92nd birth anniversary on Monday
The 92nd birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will be observed on Monday in a befitting manner.
On this day in 1930, Fazilatunnesa Mujib was born to a noble Muslim family at Tungipara village of the then Gopalganj sub-division in Faridpur district.
She was assassinated along with Bangabandhu and most of her family members on August 15 in 1975.
The ruling Awami League (AL), its associate bodies and other socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark her birth anniversary.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and electronics media will broadcast special programmes while newspapers will publish special supplements to mark the day.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages marking the day.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said “On the night of August 15, 1975 she (Bangamata) was assassinated along with her husband, sons, daughters-in-law and close relatives the anti-liberation forces at her residence in Dhanmondi. It is a shameful chapter in the history of the nation. Bangamata is no longer among us, we hope that the young generation will devote themselves to the welfare of the motherland by upholding her ideals.”
In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said “Despite being the wife of the President and the Prime Minister, Bangmata Fazilatunnesa, known as the 'First Lady', always lived a simple life. She used to help the poor. She was the epitome of the ideal of a Bengali woman. The ideals and examples of Bangamata will continue to be a source of inspiration for Bengali women throughout the ages.”
“I hope, through the study of her biography, the new generation will be inspired to patriotism and will know about the struggling life of the father of the nation, the independence movement, the great liberation war and many unknown chapters in the struggle of freedom,” she said.

Bangamata 6-Nations Volleyball: Bangladesh finishes 5th beating Maldives
Bangladesh women’s team finished 5th in the six-nation Bangamata Asian Central Zone Women’s Volleyball Challenge beating the Maldives by 3-2 sets at the Shaheed Suhrawardy National Indoor Stadium in Mirpur on Monday.
Bangladesh’s Women’s team completed their Asian engagements with winning note beating the Maldives by 17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 23-25 and 17-15 points in their 5th and last match after conceding four successive defeats in which they failed to win even a set -Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

In the event’s final, Uzbekistan will play Nepal on Tuesday while Kyrgyzstan will meet Sri Lanka in the 3rd place deciding match.

New Delhi mission pays homage to Bangamata
Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Sunday paid homage to Bangamata Fazilatun Nessa Mujib on the occasion of her birth anniversary.
Bangamata Fazilatun Nessa Mujib was assassinated along with Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most members of her family on the brutal night of August 15 in 1975.
The 91st birth anniversary of Fazilatun Nessa Mujib was observed with due solemnity through holding of discussion and placing wreaths at her portraits at Bangabandhu Corner at the chancery building.
High Commissioner Muhammad Imran led the officers and staff of the mission in laying the wreaths.

Five women receive 'Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib Award'
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday handed over the newly- introduced "Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib Award" to five women in recognition of their outstanding contributions to different sectors.

The recipients are freedom fighter from Brahmanbaria Prof Momtaz Begum (posthumous) in Independence and Liberation War category; Tangail's Joya Pati (posthumous) in Education, Culture and Sports; Pabna's Nurunnahar Begum in Agriculture and Rural Development; freedom fighter from Cumilla Principal Jobeda Khatun Parul in Politics; and Netrakona's Nadira Jahan (Surma Jahid) in Research.
The award is considered as the highest state award for women in the "Ka" category, according to the Women's and Children Ministry.
The award-giving ceremony was held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
Organized by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined it virtually as the chief guest.

The government has introduced the award to recognize five Bangladeshi women in different categories -- politics, economics, education, culture and sports, social services, independence and Liberation War, research, and agriculture and rural development -- every year.
Each awardee received a medal made of 40 gm of 18-carat gold, a replica of the medal, a cheque for Tk 4 lakh and a certificate of honour.
Begum Fazilatun Nesa, the mother of the Prime Minister and wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, embraced martyrdom along with Bangabandhu and other family members in a brutal attack by some army personnel on August 15, 1975.
She was born at Tungipara in Gopalganj on August 8, 1930, and struggled for an independent Bangladesh alongside Bangabandhu.

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatun Nessa Indira, on behalf of the Prime Minister, distributed the award among the winners.
