The Awami League won a comfortable two-thirds majority for a fourth election in a row on Sunday (January 07, 2024), in 299 out of 300 constituencies, and a strong showing by independent candidates as predicted. Ruling party candidates won in 222 seats in Sunday’s election, while independent candidates — most of them belonging to AL — won 62 seats. A brilliant unbeaten century by Myshukur Rahman helped league leader Rangpur Division score 304 for 7 in 90 overs against Sylhet Division on the first day of the four-day National Cricket League at the BKSP ground-4 in Savar on Sunday. Sent in to bat first in the day’s title deciding final round match of Tier-1, Rangpur Division, riding on opener Myshukur Rahman’s polished innings of 131 runs off 264 balls featuring 14 fours, made a good total of 304 runs on the very first day. Apart from Mushukur ton, wicket keeper Dhiman Ghosh (54), Suhrawardy Shuvo (37), Naeem Islam (27), Alauddin Babu (21), captain Ariful Haque (14) and Tanvir Haider (13) were the other notable scorers for Rangpur. Debutant Jaynul Islam grabbed three wickets for 63 runs while spinner Enamul Haque Jr and Ahmed Abidul Haque took two wickets each conceding 73 and 75 runs respectively. In the day’s another Tier-1 league match, Dhaka Division scored 263 for 6 in 90 overs against Khulna Division on the first day of the four-day affairs at the BKSP ground-3 in Savar on Sunday. Besides, opener Rony Talukder (48), Abdul Mazid (32), captain Taibur Rahman (32), Shuvagato Hom (21) and Raquibul Hasan (15) were the other main contributors for Dhaka. Pacer Al Amin Hossain claimed three wickets for 38 runs while Tipu Sultan took two for 77 runs. In a Tier-2 match, Chittagong Division opened the innings first after winning the toss and were out for 223 runs in 71.1 overs featuring 83 runs off 116 balls with nine boundaries by one down batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Besides, Pinak Ghosh (47), Jashimuddin (31), Sajjaful Haque (25), and captain Irfan Sukkur (12) were the other notable scorers for Chittagong Division. Sharfuddin did a major damage in Chittagong innings taking four wickets for .62 runs. In reply, Dhaka Metro team scored 52 for 2 in 14 overs when the bails were drawn for the first day (Sunday) to trail by 171 runs. Captain-cum-one down batter Fazle Mahmud hammered a century scoring 122 runs off 212 balls hitting 13 fours and a six. Islamul Ahsan made a half century for Barisal scoring just 50 runs in 216 balls with three boundaries while Moin Khan was the other Barishal batter scoring the double figure of 13 runs. Saqlain Sajib captured three wickets for 59 runs while Sunjamul Islam and Shafiqul Islam took two wickets each giving away 39 and 52 runs respectively.

Veteran batsman Tushar Imran of Khulna Division, Zakir Hasan of Sylhet Division and Pinak Ghose of Chattogram Division hit First-class centuries on Monday, the day one of the second round of the Bangabandhu National Cricket League (NCL). It was Zakir’s second century of the season. Sohag Gazi of Barishal Divison and Mukidul Islam of Rangpur Division bagged six wickets each on Monday as well. Sylhet Division's Zakir Hasan and Dhaka Division's Nazmul Islam Apu ended the first round of the Bangabandhu 22nd National Cricket League (NCL) as the best batsman and bowler. Despite scoring most runs in the first round of NCL, Zakir could not help his team to register a win due to the failure of his teammates. However, Nazmul helped Dhaka pull off a victory against Rangpur.  Zakir hit 151 with a highest of 140 while Nazmul bagged 10 wickets with a six-wicket haul. All four matches of the round got a winner as Dhaka beat Rangpur by 80 runs, Khulna beat Sylhet by eight wickets, Chattogram beat Rajshahi by 88 runs while Dhaka Metropolis beat Barishal by eight wickets. United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Derrick S. Brown has launched USAID’s flagship tuberculosis (TB) activity Alliance for Combating Tuberculosis in Bangladesh (ACTB) in Sylhet Division as part of the US government’s commitment to end TB globally.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has climbed to 10,021 in Sylhet division, with detection of 56 fresh cases  on Saturday.
