Bangladesh and India on Sunday agreed to work closely to further deepen and strengthen cooperation on common rivers and water resources management. They  also agreed to strengthen cooperation in IT and cybersecurity, renewable energy, agriculture and food security, sustainable trade, climate change and disaster management. The seventh round of the Bangladesh-India Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) was held in New Delhi on Thursday. The JCC was co-chaired by Foreign Minister  AK Abdul Momen and Indian External Affairs Minister  S Jaishankar. Both sides reiterated the importance of the safe, speedy and sustainable return of the forcibly displaced persons from Myanmar's Rakhine, now being sheltered by Bangladesh, according to the joint media release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Read: Floods: India extends "support, solidarity" to Bangladesh Acknowledging the excellent bilateral ties shared by the two countries, both ministers reiterated the importance of closer cooperation to expeditiously implement their leaders' decisions and to further deepen and strengthen mutual engagement in all sectors of bilateral cooperation. During his visit to New Delhi, Foreign Minister Momen will also pay a courtesy call on Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and other dignitaries of the Indian government. It was agreed that the eighth round of India-Bangladesh JCC will be held in Bangladesh in 2023. Both ministers appreciated that in addition to the high-level visits, there have been intensive engagements through various bilateral mechanisms and agreed to further enhance partnership-building efforts with renewed vigour and regularity.

Bangladesh will focus on water-sharing of common rivers, energy security and trade issues during the next round of Joint Consultation Commission (JCC) meeting between Bangladesh and India in Delhi on Sunday, officials said. Issues related to regional cooperation, better connectivity and relevant projects are likely to be discussed at the 7th JCC meeting. Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen will co-chair the JCC meeting with his Indian counterpart Dr S Jaishankar. They had a meeting while attending the third edition of Asian Confluence River Conclave-2022 (NADI) in Guwahati last month. Asked about the JCC meeting, the foreign minister said all the issues including border management, issues related to joint rivers and energy security will be discussed. Bangladesh was seeking the long-delayed meeting of the Joint Rivers Commission but it is not taking place before the JCC. READ: Dhaka-Delhi JCC likely to be held in June 19 “We wanted to have the JRC meeting first,” Momen told reporters on Wednesday, adding that Bangladesh will discuss the rivers’ issues in the JCC. This will be the first physical JCC meeting convened since the onset of Covid-19 pandemic, with the previous edition held virtually in 2020.  The JCC will review the entire gamut of bilateral relations, including cooperation in the wake of Covid-19, border management and security, trade and investment, connectivity, energy, water resources, development partnership and regional and multilateral issues, said the Indian External Affairs Ministry on Saturday. The two foreign ministers also met in Dhaka recently and stressed on following up the decisions taken at the highest level for their effective implementation for mutual benefit. The sixth meeting of the JCC was held on September 29, 2020. Although Dhaka was scheduled to host the meeting, the meeting was held on a virtual platform due to Covid-19 pandemic. Bangladesh and India noted that 2021 was a landmark year for their relationship as the president and the prime minister of India visited Bangladesh in a single year. The countries celebrated the 50th years of diplomatic ties through the joint celebration of a number of landmark events across the world. The meeting will also discuss the schedule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to India later this year. The two countries share 54 common rivers and the Teesta water-sharing deal remains pending despite all preparations in 2011 due to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's opposition.

The JCC will be co-chaired by Momen and Jaishankar. Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma has lauded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her government’s “zero tolerance policy” to terrorism and insurgency. He made the remarks on Friday during his meeting with Foreign Minister Momen in Guwahati, capital of Assam. Momen, in response, said the development of Bangladesh and India are complementing each other and many Indians are working in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is the fourth largest remittance sending country to India, he said. He noted Bangladesh and India are enjoying the best of their relations under the able leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Momen underscored that Assam could take advantage of Bangladesh’s dynamic socio-economic growth, both as a market for their products and also as a source of quality products at a competitive price, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He emphasized enhancing trade and commerce between the two countries and promoting tourism. Further, he suggested that river transportation could be an effective means for amplifying bilateral trade. Foreign Minister Momen had the meeting with the Chief Minister of Assam at Koinadhara State Guest House, Khanapara. During the meeting, Momen gratefully acknowledged that Assam and India occupy a special place in his heart, as he took shelter in Assam in 1971 during the Liberation War of Bangladesh. He informed that Bangladesh is in the process of extending 200 scholarships for the family members of the war veterans from India who fought for the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. Momen recalled the visit of the President and Prime Minister of India to Bangladesh in 2021 to join the epochal events Bangladesh celebrated; Golden Jubilee of Independence of Bangladesh and Birth Centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. On 06 December 2021, Bangladesh and India jointly celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as “Maitri Diwas” in 18 selected capitals across the globe in addition to Dhaka and New Delhi. Sarma stressed that Assam is keen to engage with Bangladesh for the common benefit of the two peoples through promotion of trade, commerce, connectivity and cultural activities. He praised the success of the government of Bangladesh in dealing with Covid-19 pandemic. Sarma recalled the significant role of railway connectivity with Chattogram port city in trade during the British period. The chief minister informed that Assam is developing advanced medical and education institutions and can be a destination for the people of Bangladesh for medical treatment and study purposes. Momen also attended a dinner hosted by the CM of Assam, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar where a number of Ministers from the Centre and States along with Ambassadors from ASEAN countries were present. Momen arrived in Guwahati on Friday to attend the 3rd edition of Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence (NADI) to be held from 28-29 May 2022. During his visit to Guwahati, he is also expected to call on the governor of Assam and hold an interactive session with the members of the business community.

The 6th Bangladesh-India Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) meeting began on Tuesday afternoon with a special focus on water sharing, projects under India-financed LoC, connectivity, trade and energy cooperation, officials said.

Bangladesh and India want to launch a travel air bubble without any delay by discussing the issue in details in New Delhi while a virtual meeting of the next Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) is under discussion, officials said.
