Ex-OC Pradeep gets 20 years in jail in graft case
A Chattogram court on Wednesday sentenced disgraced ex-OC Pradeep Kumar Das to 20 years in jail and his wife Chumki to 21 years for amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income.
Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Munshi Abdul Majid handed down the punishment to the former Teknaf police station in-charge and his wife, and ordered the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to confiscate their properties, said public prosecutor Mahmudul Haque Mahmud.
Pradeep, also a death row convict in the murder case of Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan (retired), is currently lodged in Chattogram district Jail. His wife is also in judicial custody.

On July 18, the court fixed Wednesday as the judgment day in the case.
On December 15, 2021, the Chattogram court indicted ex-OC Pradeep and his wife in the case. On September 1 last year, the court accepted a chargesheet in the graft case against the former cop and his wife.
ACC Chittagong assistant director Md Riaz Uddin submitted the chargesheet on July 26. The Commission filed the case against the couple for amassing wealth over Tk 4 crore, on August 23 in 2020.
ACC sources said the anti-graft watchdog’s investigation against the disgraced cop started way back in 2018. On April 20 last year, he and his wife were asked to submit their wealth statement which they did in two months.
It may be mentioned here that on July 31, 2020, Major Sinha was shot dead at the Shamlapur police check-post in Baharchhara union of Cox's Bazar on his way back to the town after filming for a documentary.

On August 5, 2020, Sinha's sister, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, filed a case in Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate Court accusing nine members of law enforcement agencies of being involved in the killing, including ex-OC Pradeep and Baharchhara police outpost inspector Liakat Ali.
On December 13, the same year, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) submitted a charge-sheet against 15 people, including ex-OC Pradeep, police informer Ayaz and three APBn members, in the case.
On June 27, 2021, the court framed charges against them.

Court fixes June 20 for hearing arguments against ex-OC Pradeep and his wife
Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Court has fixed June 20 to hear arguments against former Officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf police station and death row convict Pradeep Kumar Das and his wife Chumki Karan in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday noon.
Judge Munshi Abdul Majid gave out the order. Pradeep and his wife Chumki were present in the courtroom during the order.

The lawyers of the accused Sameer Dasgupta and Ratan Chakrobarti said that the court has heard testimonies from two witnesses, Chairman of Boalkhali upazila’s Saroatoli union Belal Hossain and Member of ward no 9 of the same union Abdul Jalil, and fixed the date for further arguments today.
According to court sources, the court proceedings of the graft case started on December 15, 2021 through framing of charges. The accused then applied to the High Court (HC) seeking acquittal from the case, which was rejected by the HC.
The graft case was lodged by the Assistant Director of ACC’s Chattogram-2 office Md Riaz Uddin on August 23, 2020. The ACC filed a charge sheet to a Chattogram court on July 26, 2021, which was accepted by the court on September 1, 2021.
Pradeep and Chumki surrendered before the court on May 23, 2022.
According to the chargesheet, Pradeep built a six-storey house in Chattogram city’s Pathorghata area in his father-in-law’s name to conceal money earned illegally. Later, Pradeep’s father-in-law donated the building to his daughter Chumki.
Though there are documents of this handover, the building is currently owned by Pradeep and Chumki.
The chargesheet also says that the commission business and the fish-farming business that Chumki had shown in her income tax return documents were fakes. The ACC haven’t found any existence of these businesses during their investigations.

The fake documents show the ways in which Chumki has helped Pradeep to conceal the latter’s ill-gotten money.
The charge sheet provides a list of assets owned by Pradeep and Chumki, including a six-storey house, another house in the city’s Sholashohor area, 45 bhori gold ornaments, two cars and an apartment in Cox’s Bazar.
The ACC had produced a total of 29 people as witnesses, among whom 24 provided testimonies.

Graft case: Ex-OC Pradeep’s wife sent to jail on surrender
A Chattogram court on Monday sent Chumki Karon ,wife of ex-OC and death-row convict in Major Sinha (retd) murder case Pradeep Kumar Das, to judicial custody in a case over amassing wealth illegally.
Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Munshi Abdul Majid passed the order after Chumki Karon surrendered before the court and sought bail, said Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) lawyer Mahmudul Haque.

Chumki Karon remained absconding since the arrest of Pradeep in major (retd) Sinha Mohammed Rashed Khan murder case.

ACC sources said the anti-graft watchdog’s investigation against Pradeep started in 2018.
On April 20 last year, Pradeep and his wife were asked to submit their wealth statement and they submitted their wealth statements in June that year.
After a long investigation, the ACC found evidence that the couple acquired assets worth over Tk 4 crore illegally.

ACC’s graft case: Recording testimony of ex-OC Pradeep suspended
A Chattogram court on Thursday suspended recording the testimony of Ex-OC Pradeep Kumar Das, a death row convict in Major Sinha (retired)murder case, in a case over acquiring wealth illegally.
Chattogram Divisional Special Court Judge Munshi Abdul Mazid passed the order during a hearing on a petition submitted by Pradeep’s lawyer.
However, the court said recording testimony of Pradeep’s wife Chumki will continue.
Earlier in the day, the court recorded statements of Mohammad Riaz Uddin, plaintiff of the case and Assistant Director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Pradeep Kumar Das was taken to the Chattogram court on Thursday amid strict security from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur.
“The court fixed January 17 to record the testimonies but it began today. Pradeep’s lawyer appealed for suspending recording of testimony of Pradeep until the High Court’s hearing on his petition seeking the cancellation of the indictment order in the case which the court granted,” said Mahmudul Haque Mahmud, ACC lawyer.
On January 30, ex-OC Pradeep submitted the petition to the HC seeking cancellation of indictment order and judicial proceedings in this case.
On December 15 last year, a Chattogram court indicted Pradeep in this case.

Sinha murder: Ex-OC Pradeep, Liakat sentenced to death; 6 get life term
A Cox’s Bazar court on Monday sentenced former OC Pradeep Kumar Das and police inspector Liakat Ali to death and six others to life term imprisonment in the Maj (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan murder case.
The six lifers are constable Sagar Dev, sub-inspector Nandolal Rakkhit, constable Rubel Sharma, Nurul Amin, Md Nizamuddin and Ayaz Uddin.
District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail pronounced the judgment in presence of all the 15 accused, said Public Prosecutor Faridul Alam.
The court, however, acquitted seven other accused.

The 15 accused were brought to the court from Cox's Bazar district jail at 2 pm.
Of the 15 accused, 12 had given confessional statements before court except Pradeep, Sagar Dev and Rubel.

Ex-OC Pradeep appeals to HC challenging indictment order in graft case
Pradeep Kumar Das, former OC of Teknaf Police Station, has filed a petition in the High Court seeking the cancellation of an indictment order in a case over acquiring wealth illegally.
Advocate Masud Alam filed the petition on behalf of OC Pradeep, confirmed Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan on Sunday.
The petition also sought the suspension of the judicial proceedings of the case.
On December 15 last year, a Chattogram court indicted Pradeep in this case.

A Chattogram court on Wednesday indicted former OC of Teknaf Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das in a case over acquiring wealth illegally paving the way for his trial.
Chattogram Divisional Judge Munshi Abdul Majid framed the charges against Pradeep and fixed January 17 for hearing witnesses.
Earlier on September 1, the court accepted a charge sheet in the graft case against the sacked OC and his wife Chumki.

Graft case: Court orders confiscating properties of Ex-OC Pradeep, wife
A court here on Tuesday asked the deputy commissioners of Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram to confiscate the assets of ex-OC of Teknaf Model Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das and his wife in a graft case.
Chattogram Metropolitan Session Judge Sheikh Ashfaque Rahman passed the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC filed the case against sacked OC Pradeep, now in jail in Major(retd) Sinha murder case, and his wife for amassing wealth worth Tk 4 crore on August 23.

Emran Hossain, court inspector, said the court ordered to confiscate the assets Pradeep and his wife and appoint a receiver.
However, Chumki Karon, wife of Pradeep, remained absconding since Pradeep’s arrest in the Maj. (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan murder case.
ACC sources said the anti-graft watchdog’s investigation against Pradeep started in 2018.
On April 20 last year, Pradeep and his wife were asked to submit their wealth statement and they submitted their wealth statements in June that year.

After a long investigation, the ACC reportedly found information that the couple acquired assets worth more than Tk 4 crore illegally.
Sinha was killed in police firing at Baharchhara police check-post on July 31. His elder sister Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous filed a case at Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on August 5.
Ex-OC Pradeep surrendered the following day.

Sinha murder case: Pradeep, 14 others indicted
A Cox’s Bazar court on Sunday framed charges against 15 accused, including suspended Teknaf police station officer-in-charge Pradeep Kumar Das, in the major (retd) Sinha MD Rashed Khan murder case.
District and Sessions Judge Md Ismail Hossain passed the order.

The court also fixed July 26, 27 and 28 for recording testimonies of witnesses, said Public Prosecutor of Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Court Faridul Alam.
It also rejected bail petitions of six accused, including ex-OC Pradeep and constable Sagar Dev.
The hearing continued for three hours starting at 11 am.
Earlier, the 15 accused were produced before the court amid tight security at 10 am. They were later sent back to jail.

OC Pradeep shown arrested in ACC case
Former Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das, an accused in Major Sinha killing case, was shown arrested in another case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission .
