The government has withdrawn 5 percent duty on onion import in an effort to cool down the overheated local market following its export ban by India.

India has decided to allow export of some quantity of onions which was handed over to customs on the date imposing ban on onion export.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Thursday said Indian Ministry of External Affairs is very "repentant" for not informing Bangladesh beforehand while imposing a ban on onion export.

As news of India’s onion export ban spread, traders in Magura hiked prices of the bulb to as high as Tk 100 per kg on Wednesday.

The government of India on Monday prohibited the export of all varieties of onion except in cut, sliced or powdered form.
