Ex-minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury arrested
Saber Hossain Chowdhury, former minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, was arrested in the capital on Sunday.
A team of Detective Branch arrested him from the capital’s Gulshan area, said DC (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Talebur Rahman.

Producers of single-use plastics to be held accountable, hopes Saber
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Affairs Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury on Sunday said the government wants to hold anyone involved in producing single-use plastics accountable.
The minister also said his ministry is taking initiative to make rules in this regard.
Saber Hossain said this in reply to a call attention notice of ruling Awami League MP elected from Dhaka-10 Ferdous Ahmed in Parliament.

The minister said 30,000 metric tons of solid waste is being produced every day throughout Bangladesh.
Of this total, around 7000 metric tons are being produced in the Dhaka city and 10 percent of this waste is single used plastic.

“We intend to phase out production and distribution of single used plastic. We are taking action in this regard.”
The minister also proposed to ban single-use plastics. “If it is possible, it will be an example for the country.”

“If usage of one time plastic products cannot be stopped, it will be a challenge to protect the capital's environment,” he also said.

Bangladesh needs skilled and educated manpower to face various challenges and good educational institutions can make smart citizens, said Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury on Friday.
“A smart society is needed to build a smart Bangladesh. Smart citizens are needed to build a smart society. And good educational institutions can make smart citizens,” he said .

Bangladesh to work with British govt to enhance botanical garden: Environment Minister
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury on Monday said the government is willing to work with the British government for the enhancement of the National Botanical Garden.
"It will be made children-friendly. Conservation of vegetation and waterbodies will be accomplished in partnership with the British government," he told a meeting with a delegation, led by British High Commissioner Sarah Cook, at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

Environment Minister stops burning wastes at Osmani Udyan
Environment Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury on Thursday stopped burning wastes at an open place in the city’s Osmani Udyan.
Govt to provide digital skills training to 80,000 students
He went to the spot instantly after seeing smoke of burning wastes from his office room of the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry.
The minister asked Dhaka South City Corporation authority to take action against the burning of wastes as the smoke emitted from it was polluting air.

Govt determined to develop Bangladesh's environment: Saber Hossain
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury said on Wednesday that the government is determined to develop the country's environment and forests.
To deal with climate change, the cooperation of international development partners like the Asian Development Bank is very necessary for the development of the country's environment and forests.
The minister made the statement while the Country Representative of the Asian Development Bank to Bangladesh, Edimon Ginting, met him in his office on Wednesday.

Effective steps coming to control air pollution : Saber Hossain
Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury on Tuesday said the government would take effective steps to control air pollution and protect public health.
“Effective measures will be taken against air pollution to protect public health. Legal action will be taken against brick kilns responsible for air pollution to this end,” he said at a meeting in his ministry.
