Interns at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital go on strike after ‘assault’ on physician
Interns at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital went on work abstention early Monday protesting ‘attacks on physicians by a patients’ relatives’.
The interns began the protest around 3:30 am locking the gate of emergency department, hospital sources said.
According to hospital authorities, a 65-year-old patient, Abdus Samad from Ramnagar in the city, was admitted to the emergency department around 12:30 am in critical condition after suffering a heart attack.
He was later transferred to the CCU of the cardiac ward and the patient’s relatives were informed about his critical condition. He died within an hour of treatment around 1:30 am.
Following his death, his relatives allegedly assaulted attending medical officer, Dr. Abdullah Al Muin. The relatives took the body away around 3:30 am.
Medical services including patient admission were disrupted as intern doctors locked the emergency department gate following the chaos.
However, hospital authorities denied that the gate had been locked and new patient admissions resumed at around 9:30 am.
Additional police have been deployed at the hospital.
Kotwali Police Station has detained a relative of the deceased patient, Yakub Ali, in connection with the alleged assault on the doctor.
To resolve the situation, hospital director Dr. Fazlur Rahman called a meeting with department heads and protesting interns around 12 pm.

Attack on DMCH intern: Fellows stage protest, threaten strike
Interns at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) formed a human chain in front of the central Shahid Minar on Wednesday morning protesting the attack on their fellow Dr Sazzad Hossain.
Condemning the attack they demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the attackers around 11am.
Dr Mohiuddin Zilani, president of Intern Chikitshok Paridhad of DMCH, said, “This incident is not new as we often face such assault. We have a meeting with the Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University. He assured us that he will take necessary action to identify and punish the culprits."
"We also demanded the concerned to identify the attackers within tomorrow (Thursday). Otherwise, we will go on strike," he added.
On Monday night, some students of Dhaka University beat Dr Sazzad Hossen up at Central Shahid Minar premises without any valid reason, said the victim.
"Around 9pm of August 8, I sat on the premises of central Shahid Minar. Suddenly, some students of the University of Dhaka (wearing T-shirts with the logo of Dhaka University) appeared and started asking me about my identity and institution," Dr Sazzad wrote on his Facebook timeline.

He added, "When I told them that I am a student of Dhaka Medical College, they wanted to check my ID card. As I failed to show my ID card at that moment, they started beating me and hurled abusive words at me.”
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Moudut Halder said a case was filed in this connection against some unidentified people.
