Global cases near 250 million
The overall number of Covid cases is fast approaching 250 million amid the global race to vaccinate masses against the infectious disease.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 249, 502,872 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,043,945 as of Sunday morning.
The US has recorded 46,461,564 cases to date and more than 754,278 people have died so far from the virus in the country, as per the university data.
Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January, have registered 21,874,324 cases so far, while its Covid death toll rose to 609,388.
India's COVID-19 tally rose to 34,344,683 on Saturday, as 10,929 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, the federal health ministry's latest data showed.
Besides, as many as 392 deaths due to the pandemic have been reported since Friday morning, taking the total death toll to 460,265.

Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh logged just a single Covid-related death in 24 hours till Saturday morning, the lowest in nearly 18 months.
During the period, the country also registered 154 fresh cases, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Bangladesh reported its first death from Covid-19 on March 18, 2020.
The person who died during the period was a man.
The fresh numbers took the total fatality to 27,891 while the country’s caseload mounted to 1,570,835.
Meanwhile, the daily-case positivity rate slightly increased to 1.18 per cent from Friday’s 1.12 per cent.
However, the mortality rate remained static at 1.78 per cent.
The fresh cases were detected after testing 13, 072 samples, said the DGHS.

Also, the recovery rate remained unchanged at 97.70 per cent with the recovery of 157 more patients during the period.
So far, 30,521, 391people have fully been vaccinated in the country while 43,356,273 received the first dose as of Friday, according to the DGHS.
Meanwhile, the campaign to vaccinate the school students of the 12-17 age group began in Dhaka on Monday.
The vaccination campaign will be conducted at eight centres in the capital although it was scheduled to begin at 12 centres in the city. Other centres did not get approval due to lack of adequate facilities.

Global Covid-19 cases top 148 million
The Covid-19 situation is worsening around the world with each passing the day, despite mass vaccinations. The overall number of corona cases has now topped 148 million.
As of Wednesday morning, the total case count and fatalities stand at 148,353,905 and 3,131,636, respectively, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
The US, which is the world's worst-hit country in terms of both cases and deaths, has logged 32,175,049 cases and 573,378 deaths to date, as per the university data.
Besides, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased its guidelines Tuesday on the wearing of masks outdoors, saying fully vaccinated Americans don’t need to cover their faces anymore unless they are in a big crowd of strangers, reports AP. Those who are unvaccinated can go outside without masks in some situations.
Brazil's Covid-19 death toll on Tuesday reached 395,022 pushing the national count to 14,441,563, the country's health authorities said.
India has registered 17,636,307 Covid cases with 197,894 fatalities as of Wednesday morning, according to the country's health ministry.
Hospitalisations and deaths have reached record highs, overwhelming healthcare workers. Patients are suffocating because hospitals’ oxygen supplies have run out.

Desperate family members are sending SOS messages on social media, hoping someone would help them find oxygen cylinders, empty hospital beds and critical drugs for their loved ones. Crematoriums have spilled over into parking lots, lighting up night skies in some cities, reports AP.
Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh reported 78 more coronavirus-related deaths and 3,031 new cases on Tuesday morning, showing a downtrend.
The country witnessed over 100 deaths daily from April 16 to 19 and on April 25 as the second wave of the virus hit Bangladesh.
The daily infection rate slipped to 12.51 percent on Tuesday from Monday’s 12.82 percent while the mortality rate remained static at 1.49 percent.

So far, 751,659 cases and 11,228 deaths have been confirmed, the Directorate General of Health Services said in a handout.

Lockdown extended
A rapid rise in Covid infections prompted the government to enforce a lockdown from early April, but the restrictions failed to achieve the intended result.
Later, the government announced a complete lockdown from April 11 and extended it to April 28.
On Monday, State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain said the lockdown would be extended till May 5 "as there is no improvement in the Covid-19 situation".
However, shopping malls will remain open from 10am to 8pm during the extended period, he said.
Vaccination campaign
Bangladesh launched a vaccination drive on February 7 with Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine doses it acquired from the Serum Institute of India.
Bangladesh signed an agreement with Serum for 30 million doses. But a record number of cases in India has made the delivery of the doses uncertain.

Global Covid cases top 145 million
The Covid-19 situation is worsening around the world by the day, even with mass inoculations underway. The overall number of corona cases has now topped 145 million.
As of Saturday morning, the total case count and fatalities stand at 145,289,885 3,083,440, respectively. The latest figures have been released by Johns Hopkins University.
To date, the US has logged 31,991,750 cases, with 571,197 fatalities, as per the university data.
With the rate of Covid-19 deaths soaring in the past two weeks, Brazil on Friday reported 2,914 fatalities in 24 hours, raising the national toll to 386,416.

According to the country's Health Ministry, 14,237,078 people in Brazil have so far tested positive for the virus, after tests detected 69,105 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours.
India has so far registered 16,263,695 cases and 186,920 deaths, according to the country's Health Ministry.
Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh recorded 88 coronavirus-related deaths in 24 hours till Friday morning, as the country grapples to tackle the second wave of the virus.
Health authorities also reported 3,629 new cases, said the Directorate General of Health Services in a handout.
The coronavirus death toll now stands at 10,869 with the mortality rate slightly rising to 1.47 percent after staying at 1.46 for the last two days.
Meanwhile, the daily infection rate fell to 14 percent from Thursday’s 14.63 percent.
Between April 16 and 19, the country recorded over 100 deaths breaking previous daily records. Bangladesh saw 91, 95 and 98 Covid-related deaths on April 20, 21 and 22, respectively.

Health authorities have so far confirmed 739,703 cases. Among them, 647,674 people -- 87.56 percent of all patients -- have recovered.
A rise in infection prompted the government to go for a lockdown from early April but it turned out to be lax. From April 11, the government imposed a ‘strict lockdown’ and later extended it to April 28.
On Friday, the government allowed shopping malls to open from April 25.

Global Covid cases top 132 million
The worst of the Covid-19 pandemic seems to be far from over. The overall number of global corona cases has now surged past 132 million, while the death toll is fast nearing 3 million.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count reached 132,300,599 while the death toll from the virus mounted to 2,871,781 on Wednesday morning.
The US has so far recorded 30,845,912 cases and 556,509 deaths, as per the university data.
In the US, nearly half of new coronavirus infections are in just five states -- a situation that is putting pressure on the federal government to consider changing how it distributes vaccines by sending more doses to hotspots, reports AP.
New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey together reported 44% of the nation’s new Covid-19 infections, or nearly 197,500 new cases, in the latest available seven-day period, according to the state health agency data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Total US infections during the same week numbered more than 452,000.

Brazil on Tuesday registered a record 4,195 deaths from Covid in a single day, taking the accumulated pandemic toll to 336,947, the Ministry of Health said.
Meanwhile, 86,979 people tested positive on Tuesday, pushing the national tally to around 13,100,580.
Neighbouring India has recorded 12,686,049 cases and 165,547 deaths as of Wednesday morning, according to the data.
Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh witnessed record-breaking daily Covid-19 fatalities and infections, with 66 deaths and 7,213 cases in 24 hours till Tuesday morning.
More than 7,000 new coronavirus cases were recorded for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, according to a handout issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the 66 new deaths, the coronavirus fatalities rose to 9,384 while the mortality rate dropped slightly to 1.44 percent as it was 1.45 percent on Monday.
During the 24-hour period, 2,969 patients recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 558,383, the DGHS handout said.
Although the government enforced a 7-day lockdown from Monday restricting people’s movement, shutting shops and markets and suspending operations of public transport (bus, train and domestic flights), people have been moving around freely, posing risks of more transmission.
Bangladesh has so far recorded 651,652 coronavirus cases, the DGHS handout added.
Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 last year and confirmed the first death from the virus 10 days later.

Vaccination drive
The government launched a countrywide vaccination campaign on February 7 with doses received from the Serum Institute of India.
Bangladesh inked an agreement with Serum in December last year for acquiring 30 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Serum is supposed to supply the doses between January and June this year – 5 million each month.
Second dose of vaccine
The vaccination drive of the coronavirus second doses will begin from April 8 (Thursday), said Health Services Division Secretary Lokman Hossain on Tuesday.
“Though the vaccination campaign of the first doses was supposed to be concluded on Tuesday, the registration process for taking the first doses is still underway,” he said.
