Killing of ex-DU teacher: Arrested mason remanded
A Gazipur court placed mason Anwarul Islam on a three-day remand on Saturday in a case over the killing of former professor of Dhaka University Saida Gaffar.
Gazipur Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court-2 Judge Mehedi Pavel Sweet passed the order after police produced the arrestee before it and sought a 10-day remand to interrogate him,said Dipankar Roy, sub-inspector of Kashimpur police station.
Saida Gaffar, a former Professor of Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of the university, was found dead at Kashimpur in Gazipur on Friday, two days after she had gone missing.

The professor was buried on Friday night at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard, said her family.

DU Professor of Sanskrit Department dies of Covid
Retired Professor of Dhaka University Dr Foyjunnesa Begum died of Coronavirus. She was 81.
She breathed her last on Saturday afternoon while undergoing treatment at United Hospital in Dhaka.
Dr Foyjunnesa had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since December 10 after she tested positive for covid-19.

In a condolence message on Sunday Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman University expressed deep grief over the death of Begum Fayjunnesa.
The VC said Faizunnesa was a very humble, gentle and humane teacher and researcher. She held various important posts including chairman of Sanskrit department with honesty, devotion and efficiency.

Police complaint filed against Prof Asif Nazrul over controversial Facebook post
A police complaint has been filed against Dhaka University Prof Asif Nazrul over his controversial Facebook post hinting at a Kabul airport-like situation in Bangladesh "if fair elections are held".
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the students' wing of the ruling Awami League, filed the complaint at the Shahbagh police station on Wednesday night, said acting officer-in-charge Moudud Howlader.

"His remarks have tarnished the country's image," as per the complaint.
Police on Thursday claimed to have received the complaint from BCL's human resource development secretary Md Nahid Hasan Shahin, but said that no FIR was filed in connection with the general diary entry.
“The complaint has been accepted as a general diary entry. As the allegation pertains to cyber security, we will take further steps only after consultation with the detective branch of the cyber unit," Moudud said.

In his Facebook post on 17 August, the law professor wrote: "The scenario of Kabul Airport could also take place in Bangladesh as well, if fair elections were held here."
Enraged by the Facebook post, BCL on Wednesday even locked his office at the university’s law department.
