JMB man jailed for 20 years in explosives case
A Khulna Court on Monday sentenced a member of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 20 years imprisonment in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
The convict is Ziaur Rahman alias Sagar alias Sabbir, Khulna divisional chief of JMB.

Khulna Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Ashikur Rahman handed down the verdict.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment, said Lawyer Kazi Sabbir Ahmed of the court.
According to the case, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Ziaur Rahman from Miapara of Khulna on December 29 in 2005. During the interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in militant activities.
Based on his information, a large quantity of explosives was recovered from a room of a hostel at Daulatpur in Jashore.

Later, on December 30 of the year, a case was filed at Daulatpur Police Station under the Explosive Substances Act.
On January 19, 2006, Jahedul Haque Sarkar, sub-inspector (SI) of Daulatpur Police Station, submitted a chargesheet against him.

Covid test scam: Khulna hospital technologist lands in jail
A Khulna court has sent a technologist of Khulna General Hospital to jail in a Tk 2.57-crore graft relating to Covid-19 tests.
Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahidul Islam on Sunday issued the order turning down the bail petition of technologist Prakash Kumar Das, 45, said advocate Khandaker Mojibur Rahman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
On November 18, Khandaker Kamruzzaman, deputy assistant director of ACC’s Khulna district office, filed the case.

Prakash recently came to Khulna to join his job here with a 15-day bail from the High Court in the graft case.
According to the case statement, Prakash was in charge of collecting the fees for Covid-19 tests from people going abroad.
The case statement reveals that Prakash collected a total of Tk 4.24 crore from July, 2020 to July, 2021 from people and deposited only Tk 1.66 crore to the government treasury, and embezzled the rest of the money, Tk 2.57 crore.
Later, a five-member inquiry committee, headed by Khulna General Hospital Civil Surgeon and Supervisor Dr Niaz Mohammad, was formed to investigate the allegations.

According to the probe report, the amount deposited was over Tk 2.57 crore, less than the amount he received.
Later, on September 22, an explanation was sought from Prakash and he promised to provide it the following day but he has been missing since then.
Immediately after this, a general diary (GD) was filed by the Khulna Civil Surgeon's Office with Khulna Police Station on September 28.

Stepmother to die for killing 10-yr old girl
A Khulna court on Monday sentenced a woman to death for killing her step daughter in 2020.
The condemned convict is Tithi Akter Mukta, wife of Khaza Sheikh, an ansar member of Arkandi village in Terokhada upazila.
The court also fined the convict Tk 10,000.
According to the prosecution, Khaza Sheikh married Mukta after divorcing is first wife on January 29, 2020.

Khaza’s daughter Tanisha, 10, used to live at her father’s house after the divorce of her parents.
On April 2, 2020, Khaza had an altercation with Mukta over maintaining an illicit relationship with one Farabi Prasenjit over mobile phone. During the altercation, Khaza threatened to divorce her.
To take revenge on Khaza, Mukta locked Tanisha in her room and hit the girl with a sharp weapon, leaving her injured on April 5, 2020.

Later, she was taken to a local hospital where doctors declared her dead.
After examining the records and witnesses, Khulna District and Sessions Judge Court Mashiur Rahman handed down the verdict.

Man to die for killing wife in Khulna
A Khulna court sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2019.
The condemned convict is Mahmud Alam, a police constable of Khulna Shiromoni Armed Police Battalion and son of Jabed Ali of Jamalnagar village in Ashashuni upazila in Satkhira district.

Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal of Khulna Judge Md Saifuzzaman handed down the verdict.
According to the prosecution, Zohana Akter Usha, wife of Mahmud in Khan Jahan area of Khulna, was strangulated to death by her husband over family feud on April 6, 2019.
Sohel Islam, victim’s brother, lodged a complaint with Khan Zahan Ali Police Station.

On August 15, 2019, police submitted a chagesheet against Mahmud in the case.
After examining the records and witnesses, the tribunal handed down the verdict.

Man sentenced to death for killing college student in Khulna
A Khulna court sentenced a man to death on Monday for killing a college student in 2012.
The convict is Mohammad Bachhu Sheikh. The court also jailed him for 10 years under two different sections and fined him Tk 20,000 and Tk 10,000.
Meanwhile, Mozammel Hossain Milon and Abul Kalam Azad were jailed for seven and two years respectively in the case. They were fined Tk 10,000 and Tk 5,000 by the court.
According to the prosecution, Obaidur Rahman Rubel, a college student of Dumuria upazila was abducted by the convicts on October 23, 2012.
Rubel’s body was found the following day with his throat slit.
Sheikh Lutfur Rahman, the victim’s father, filed a case at Dumuria Police Station.
Taijul Islam, inspector of Dumuria Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted chargesheet against three people on November 17, 2013.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Yearab Hossain delivered the verdict.
All the convicts were tried in absentia.
