75 BNP men jailed in 2013 sabotage case
A Dhaka court has sentenced 75 BNP leaders and activists, including former Jubo Dal general secretary SM Jahangir, to two and a half years in jail in a case filed on charges of sabotage in 2013.
The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasibul Haque passed the verdict on Thursday.
Defence lawyer Syed Nazrul Islam confirmed the matter.

SM Jahangir, Shahabuddin Sagar and Shah Alam were produced before the court from jail during the pronouncement of the verdict.
The court issued arrest warrants against the other 72 people as they have been absconding.
The other convicts include the leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies, Nasim, Apu, Ashraf, Mamun, Aminul, Ehsan, Ripon, Shahadat Hossain, Alamgir, Mokhlesur, Shahidul Islam, Masud, Khorshed Ali, Shafiqul Islam and others.

The court also acquitted Ashraf and Monir Hossain as they were not found guilty in the case.
Police filed the case with Uttara East Police Station in November 2013. After investigation, the police filed a chargesheet against 77 people.
Earlier on Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam sentenced nine people, including former Chhatra Dal president and former swechchhasebak dal general secretary Abdul Qadir Bhuiyan Jewel, to 39 months in jail in a case filed over arson and attack on police.
The judge also imposed a fine of Tk 5,000 on each of them and, in default of which, they will have to serve another four months in jail.
According to the case statement, on November 3, 2013, BNP and Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists set fire to a private car parked on the road during a rally in front of Hotel Plaza on VIP Road in Paltan.

When the police tried to douse the fire, the accused attacked them with bricks, iron rods and hockey sticks.
Later, Paltan police filed tje case against in this regard.

Arrest warrants issued against Jamaat chief, 11 others in sabotage case
A Dhaka court on Wednesday issued warrants for arresting Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman(now on remand in another case) and 11 activists of the party in a sabotage case filed in 2012.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Debdash Chandra Adhikary passed the order, said Azad Rahman, special public prosecutor of the court.
He said Wednesday (today) was the date of recording testimonies of the accused but the accused did not appear the court and submitted a time petition.

Later, the court issued the arrest warrant against them after rejecting time petition submitted by their counsels, he said.
The case was filed against them for holding a ‘secret anti-government meeting’ at the local Uttara Paschim police station in 2012.
On December 12, members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested the Jammat leader from his house in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
A Dhaka court put him on a seven-day remand in the case lodged at Jatrabari police station.

Earlier, his son Rafat Sadik Saifullah was also arrested in the case and he has been in jail.

Sabotage case: 7 including Jubo Dal leaders Tuku, Nayan remanded
A Dhaka court on Sunday placed seven persons, including the president and vice president of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the BNP's youth front, on four days' remand each in a sabotage case filed at Paltan model police station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin pronounced the order after investigation officer Sub Inspector Bijan Kumar Biswash of Paltan police station produced the accused before court and sought seven-day remand for interrogation.
The remanded are- Jubo Dal President Sultan Salahuddin Tuku , Vice President Noor Islam Nayan Mokhles Mia, Mosharof Hossain Khokan, Joj Mia, Farid Uddin Rana and Md Abdullah.

Senior advocate Borhan Uddin appealed for bail of the accused seeking cancellation of the remand.
The defense lawyer said the government is indiscriminately filing cases against BNP activists and leaders fearing the December 10 rally of BNP in Dhaka.
Police are also arresting the BNP activists in these false cases and seeking remand, he said in his appeal.
Dhaka Metropolitan public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu represented the state during the hearing.
According to the complaint, the accused brought out a torch procession at the city's Paltan area illegally, gave provocative statements against the government, vandalized vehicles and injured police members in an attack.

SI Kamrul Hasan filed a case against 30 people including BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and also accused 150 more anonymous people in this regard at Paltan police station.
On December 3, around 11 pm, Jubo Dal leader Tulku and Nayan were arrested from the capital's Amin bazar area while returning from BNP’s Rajshahi divisional rally.
