Renu lynching: Man to die, 4 get life term
A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced a man to death and four others to life term in jail in a case filed over the death of Taslima Begum Renu in a lynch-mob attack in Uttar Badda of Dhaka around five years back.
Dhaka Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Morshed Alam passed the order in the presence of the accused.
The condemned convict is Ibrahim alias Hridoy Molla and the lifers included Riya Begum Moyna, Abul Kalam Azad and Kamal Hossain.

Earlier, the court set September 30 to deliver the judgment but later the date was deferred to October 9 as the verdict wasn’t prepared.
According to the case statement, victim Renu died in a lynch-mob attack when she went to a school to get information about admission of her son in Uttar Badda on July 20, 2019.
Victim’s relative Syed Nasir Uddin Titu filed a case accusing 500 unidentified people.
Man stabbed to death over land dispute in Gaibandha
On September 10, 2021, the investigating officer of the case Abdul Haque, also a Detective Branch inspector, submitted a chargesheet against 13 people including two under-aged children.
On April 1 of the same year, the court framed charges against the 13 accused in the case.
After completing the legal procedures, the court handed down the judgment while the two children are now under trial.

Suspected thief beat up by mob succumbs to injuries in Patuakhali
A 42-year-old man was beaten to death on “theft suspicion” by a mob at Panpotti, under Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali district on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Liton Khandaker, son of Rafique Khandaker of Dularhat upazila of the district.
Shonit Kumar Gayen, officer-in-charge of Galachipa Police Station, said Liton along with his associates broke into the house of one Nazrul Gazi around 1:30 am on Tuesday.
Quoting the family whose house was broken into, the OC said that Yusuf, Nazrul’s son, saw the “thieves” and tried to resist them.

Being resisted, Liton stabbed Yusuf with a sharp weapon, the police official said.
Hearing cries for help, neighbours rushed in and managed to catch Liton while his associates fled the scene.
The mob beat up Liton, leaving him critically injured.
On information, police rescued Liton and took him to Galachipa Upazila Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday afternoon.
Liton was an accused in several cases over theft, said OC.

Two 'robbers' lynched to death in Narsingdi
Two suspected robbers were allegedly lynched to death by an irate mob in the Darikandi-Borochar area of Belabo upazila on Tuesday night.
The deceased were identified as Jewel Mia, 30, son of Ator Mia, and Nadim Mia, 30, son of Shahid Ullah of Lochonpur village in Raipura upazila of the district.
Shafayet Hossain, officer-in-charge of Belabo Police Station, said that the road stretching from Dorikandi bus stand to Borochar on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway is infamous for robberies.

On Tuesday night, local people spotted a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, carrying some three to four armed men, in the area. Sensing danger, the locals raised an alarm.
Soon a mob gathered and signalled the auto-rickshaw to stop. The occupants of the vehicle panicked, got off the auto-rickshaw and tried to flee. After a brief chase, the locals caught two of them and thrashed them to death, the OC said.

Later, the mob vandalised the vehicle and set it on fire, the official said.
On information, police recovered the bodies of the two men and sent them to the local hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Lalmonirhat lynching: 3 people give confessional statements
Three people – arrested in connection with the lynching of a man for “disrespecting the Quran” in Lalmonirhat’s Burimari – gave confessional statements before the court on Sunday.
