Narsingdi clash leaves 2 UP members killed
An incumbent and a former UP member were killed and 10 people injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Najarpur in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi district on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Manik Mia, 55, a member of Chnderkandi union parishad and Kalpana Begum, 32, a former member of the same union parishad.
Officer-in-charge of Raipura police station Abdul Jabbar said Abid Hasan Rubel, Raipura upazila unit Jubo League leader and Harun-or-Rashid, vice-president of Raipura municipality unit Awami League, had been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in the area.
As a sequel to the enmity, Manik Mia, uncle of Rubel, recently took shelter at the house of Bashir Uddin, member of No 9 ward of the union parisad.
Harun supporters dragged Manik out of the house and stabbed him in the courtyard, leaving him dead on the spot.
They also stabbed former UP member Kalpana to dead at the same courtyard.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Gang-rape in Ctg: UP member arrested
Chattagram, Feb 6 (UNB)- Police have arrested a union parishad member who allegedly raped a woman along with others in Sitakundu upazila of Chattogram.
A team of police of Sitakundu Model Police Station arrested UP member Jahed Sultan Robin from a relative's house in Lalanagar area early Monday.
Tofael Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Model Police Station, said they conducted a drive after the woman’s husband filed a case against him.
“We arrested him at around 3 am. He was sent to a court,” he said.
Police said the rape survivor and his husband were picked up at Sonaichhari union by UP member Jahed Sultan Robin and some cohorts while there were going to their workplace.
They tied up the man and raped his wife by turns at the office of the UP member.
They also looted two mobile phone sets and gold ornaments from them.
Police from a local police station rescued the couple after getting a call on emergency helpline no 999.
Robin went into hiding soon after the incident.

UP member, his rival survive attacks in Narail
A union parishad (UP) member was attacked with sharp weapons followed by one of his rivals being similarly attacked, in an apparent sequel to a longstanding feud over establishing political dominance in Kalia Upazila in Narail.
The injured UP member was identified as Enamul Haque Ena, 50, a member of ward no.7 of Purulia Union, also a former cooperative affairs secretary of Kalia upazila BNP.
A person named Himu Sheikh (40) from Ena’s rival camp was then attacked with sharp weapons and the group leader Khairul Islam’s house was vandalized.
Two assailants hacked Enamul indiscriminately around 2pm on Sunday, according to locals, when he was returning home from the mosque.
The assailants fled the scene leaving him seriously injured after the intervention of locals.
He was rushed to Narail Modern Sadar Hospital and later transferred to Jessore Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.
According to the police and locals, there had been enmity between Ena and Khairul’s group over establishing dominance in the area.
After Safu Sheikh, the candidate from Khairul Islam’s group, lost to Ena in the UP election last year, the conflict took a major turn.
Himu Sheikh was attacked around 4pm, two hours after the attack on Ena. People from the Ena group vandalised and looted Khairul Islam’s house in another incident.
Sheikh Tasmeem Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalia Police Station said, they are investigating the attacks.
“Additional police have been deployed in the area. The situation is calm now,” he added.

Kushtia UP member shot by rivals; former UP chairman held
A member of Osmanpur Union Parishad in Khoksa upazila in Kushtia was shot allegedly by his rivals on Wednesday.
Ward-1 member of Osmanpur UP, Hayder Ali,50 was returning from Awami League’s anti-militancy rally when some miscreants shot him at Debinagar village.
He was first taken to upazila health complex and was later transferred to Kushtia General Hospital.
Additional police were deployed at Debinagar village on Wednesday night after some miscreants vandalised and looted UP member Haydar Ali’s supporters Rashid and Rezaul’s houses.
On Thursday, an attempt to murder case was filed at Khoksha police station against Anisur Rahman, former UP chairman and general secretary of upazila Bangladesh Kirshak League following a complaint received from Hayder’s son Idris Ali, said Syed Ashiqur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Khoksha police station.

The accused was arrested later in the day, said the OC.
Injured UP member Hayder Ali said he attended the anti-militancy programme at the Upazila Sadar High School premises defying the warnings of miscreants of his rival group.

UP member burnt to death in Barguna; case filed
A case has been filed at Betagi police station in Barguna following the murder of a UP member who was locked in his house and burnt to death in the early hours of Tuesday.Manowara Begum, the mother of the victim Farooq Ahmed Shamim, filed a murder case at Betagi police station, accusing unknown persons on Saturday afternoon, Betagi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) M Shah Alam Howladar, said.On Tuesday night, some miscreants locked the door of the bedroom of UP member Farooq of Ward No. 2 at Mayar Ghun Bazar of Sarishamuri Union of Betagi upazila.In this fire, UP member Farooq, his wife Suchi Akter,25 and their two sons Mainul Khan,5, and Samiul Khan,2, sustained burn injuries. Farooq Ahmed received 75 percent burn injuries, added the OC.They were admitted to the Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Manikganj: UP member held for sexually assaulting woman after promising VGF card
Police have arrested a union parishad (UP) member of Manikganj's Saturia upazila on the charge of sexually assaulting a woman after promising her a vulnerable group feeding (VGF) card.
The arrestee is Delwar Hossain, Ward 5 member of Boraid UP of the upazila, Ashraful Alam, officer-in-charge of Saturia Police Station, said.
The woman filed a case at the police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
A Manikganj court Thursday sent Delwar to jail after rejecting his bail plea, the OC said.
The woman, who is struggling to make ends meet, requested a VGF card so that she could buy rice at a reduced price of Tk10 per kg.

Wednesday, around 8pm Delwar called the mother of two over the phone, asking her to get the card from his home. But the woman said she would go there the next day as her husband was not home.
"Later at night, the UP member came to the woman's home and sexually assaulted her. The woman's neighbours rushed to her home after hearing her scream. They caught the UP member in the act and handed him over to the police," Ashraful said.

UP member hacked to death in Jashore
A union parishad (UP) member was allegedly hacked to death by assailants in the Balunda Bazar area of Jashore's Sharsha upazila Tuesday night.
Ashanuzzaman Bablu, 45, son of Rahazan Ali of Mohishakura village, was a member of ward 7 of Bagamchara UP, said Mamun Kahan, officer-in-charge of Sharsha Police Station.

The assailants attacked Bablu when he was sipping tea at a stall in the bazar around 10pm, leaving him dead on the spot, he said.
On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body. "The body will be sent to the morgue of Jashore General Hospital for an autopsy," the OC said.
Efforts are on to identify and nab the killers, OC Mamun added.

UP member held over rape bid in C'nawabganj
A Union Parishad member was arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly trying to rape a nine-year-old girl in the district's Sadar upazila.
The arrestee has been booked for rape bid, said Mozaffor Hossain, officer-in-charge of Chapainawabganj Sadar police station.
In her complaint, the girl's mother claimed that the accused forcibly took away her daughter's bicycle while she was going to school on Tuesday.
"My daughter followed him to his house to get back her cycle. Finding her alone, he tried to rape my daughter," she told cops.
Based on the complaint, the accused was arrested around 9pm, the OC said.

UP member among 3 killed in Dinajpur road crash
A motorcyclist and two pillion riders, including a UP member, were killed when a truck hit their motorbike at Mangalpur in Bochaganj upazila of Dinajpur early Monday.
The deceased were identified as Rakibul Islam Rakib, 42, member of Atgaon Union Parishad No. 4 in Bochaganj, Noajim, 16, and Shamim Osman, 22, of Thakurgaon district.

The accident occurred when the trio was returning from a petrol pump with fuel for their microbus that ran out of fuel on their way home with family.
A truck from opposite direction hit the motorcycle at Mongalpur around 12am and fled the scene, leaving them dead on spot, said Fakhrul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Birol police station.
The bodies were handed over to their respective families, he added.
Road crashes in Bangladesh
As many as 376 lives were lost while 1500 people were injured in 283 road accidents across the country during Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, according to a report.
Road Safety Foundation (RSF), an organisation that campaigns for safer roads, on May 12 revealed this information in a new report on accidents on Bangladesh’s roads from April 25 to May 8.
A total of 156 people were killed in 128 accidents involving motorbikes, which accounted for 41.48 per cent of the total deaths.

According to the RSF findings, at least 54 pedestrians were killed in road accidents, which accounted for 14.36 percent of the total deaths.
Some 49 drivers and their assistants were also subjected to road fatalities and that is 13 per cent of the total deaths.
Of the total accidents, 132 accidents occurred on the national highways, 87 on regional highways and 41 on rural roads and 23 on city roads, the report said.

UP member found dead in Manikganj
A 50-year-old union parishad member was found dead in Saturia upazila of Manikganj early Thursday morning, a day after he went missing.
The deceased was identified as Farhad Hossain, a member of ward-6 of Baraid union. Police suspect Farhad was suffocated to death.

Locals spotted Farhad's body near a neighbour's house around 9am and alerted cops, said Md Ashraful Alam, officer-in-charge of Saturia police station. "A team soon went to the spot and took the body into custody."
Farhad had been missing since Wednesday afternoon. "However, the exact cause of his death will be determined after an autopsy," said the OC.
