Mamunul Haque acquitted in rape case
Khelafat Majlish Secretary General Maulana Mamunul Haque has been acquitted in the rape case related to an incident at Royal Resort in Sonargaon of Narayanganj district.
Judge Jasmine Ara Begum of the Narayanganj District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Thursday in Mamunul Haque’s presence in the courtroom.
Defence lawyer Advocate AKM Omar Faruq Nayan said that Maulana Haque was found not guilty of the charges brought against him in connection with the case.
This case stems from an incident that took place at the Royal Resort in April 2021.
After the trial, the court ruled in favour of the accused.
On April 3 in 2021, local Jubo and Chhatra league activists confined the Hefazat leader along with a woman to Royal Resort. Mamunul then claimed the woman to be his second wife.
On information, Hefazat fellows and madrasah students rushed to the spot and snatched him from the resort after carrying out an attack.
On April 18, a team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested him from a madrasah in Mohammadpur area.
On April 30, the woman, who was said to be Mamunul’s wife, filed a case under Women and Children Repression and Prevention Act with Sonargaon police station in Narayanganj.
On September 10, the investigation officer of the case submitted a chargesheet to the court against Mamunul.
On November 3, the court framed charges against him.
Twenty-six, out of 40 witnesses, including the woman, gave testimonies against the Khelafat Majlish leader.

Mumunul asked to appear before Cumilla court Dec 23
A Cumilla court on Sunday asked Mamunul Haque, former joint secretary general of Hefajat-e-Islam and Mawlana Khaled Saifullah Ayubi to appear before it on December 23 in a case filed over delivering provocative speech at a mahfil in 2020.
Judge Irfanul Haque Chowdhury of Cumilla Cognizance Court-7 fixed the date when the two Hefazat leaders appeared before the court in the case on Sunday, said Advocate Nurul Islam, a counsel of the state.

On December 17, last year, police filed a case against six people including Mamunul for organizing a mahfil in Chandina upazila of the district without the consent of the local administration and delivering provocative speech at the mahfil.
On April 18, a joint team of Tejgaon Division police and DMP's Detective Branch arrested Mamunul from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasah in Mohammadpur in separate cases.
He was remanded for 18 days in six different cases over rape, vandalism and Hefazat mayhem. Among them, three were filed by the district police, two by the CID, and one by the PBI.

ACC investigating Hefazat leaders Babunagri, Mamunul for graft, fund embezzlement
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an investigation against over 50 Hefazat-e-Islam leaders including Junaid Babungari and Mamunul Haque on charges of embezzling funds and corruption.
They have allegedly embezzled a huge sum of money from the organisation's funds, various madrassas, orphanages, Islamic institutions and foreign aid for religious purposes.
The decision to investigate was taken by the commission after the detectives of Bangladesh Bank and the ACC found truth in the allegation.
ACC sources said that a team of eight members has been formed, led by Akhtar Hossain Azad.

Police seek 24-day remand for Mamunul Haque

Rape case filed against ex-Hefazat leader Mamunul
Mamunul Haque, the former joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam, has been accused of rape on false pretext of marriage by a woman he had claimed to be his wife.
The woman filed the case at Sonargaon Police Station at 10:50am on Friday.
According to the case dossier, the victim claimed she had been confined after the Narayanganj resort incident and was not allowed to communicate with her parents at that time.

Didn’t do anything wrong: Mamunul tells court
Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque told a Dhaka court on Monday that he had gone to Baitul Mukarram on March 26 at the request of a police Deputy Inspector General (DIG).
“On that day, I led the Jum’a prayer at Banglabazar mosque and learned that some worshippers had gathered at the Baitul Mukarram,” Mamunul said.
“I went there at the request of a DIG and delivered a speech. I didn’t do anything wrong. We won’t go anywhere in the future at the request of police,” he added.
The state counsel said Mamunul can’t issue such statement but the court permitted him to continue.
Mamunul said the court could check his mobile call records to verify his claim.
His lawyer said incorrect information about him was mentioned in the case filed at Paltan Police Station.

Later, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury placed Mamunul on seven-day remand in two cases.
Inspector Moniruzzaman sought the court’s permission to show the Hefazat leader arrested in a 2013 case filed at Motijheel Police Station and 10 days to interrogate him. On the other hand, Inspector Kamrul Islam sought the court’s permission to show Mamunul arrested in a case filed with Paltan police over the March 26 violence at Baitul Mukarram.
The court also heard the bail plea of the Hefazat leader who was produced before the court after the completion of his seven-day remand in a vandalism case filed with Mohammadpur police in 2020.
After hearing, the court granted police four days to interrogate Mamunul in the Paltan case and three days in the Motijheel case.

Mamunul placed on 7-day fresh remand
A Dhaka court on Monday placed Mamunul Haque, former Joint Secretary General of Hefezat-e-Islam, on a seven-day remand in two separate cases filed with Paltan and Motijheel Police stations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury placed Mamunul on four-day remand in a case filed with Paltan Police Station in 2013 while three-day remand in a case filed with Motijheel Police Station.

However, police sought 20-day remand in each of the two cases. Inspector Mohammad Maniruzzaman of Paltan Police Station and Inspector Mohammad Quamrul Islam of Motijheel Police Station made the pleas before the court.
Mamunul produced was produced before the court following the completion of his seven-day remand in a vandalism case filed with Mohammadpur police station in 2020.

Mamunul controversy: Jharna's father now in police custody
Waliyar Rahman, father of Hefazat-e-Islam Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque's "second wife" Jannat e Jharna, has been taken into police custody for interrogation.
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police left for Dhaka from Faridpur's Alfadanga Police Station with Waliyar on Sunday at around 11:30am.
Waliyar is a freedom fighter and was the president of ward 4 of Gopalpur Union Awami League in Alfadanga upazila. On 21 April, he was suspended from his post.

Alfadanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Wahiduzzaman said, "Waliyar was not detained or arrested, DB police will talk to him for the sake of an investigation."
Waliyar's wife Shirin Begum said the OC and other policemen came at night and took him away, but they did not say why.
Earlier, local Awami League leaders alleged that they had received death threats for issuing a showcause notice to Waliyar.

Monayem Khan, Faridpur's Alfadanga upazila Gopalpur union Awami League president, filed a general diary (GD) with the police station in this regard.
According to the GD, Monayem received death threats from three different phone numbers on April 13 evening, for issuing the showcause notice.
Md Farid Uddin, general secretary of the same Awami League unit, also reportedly received death threats the same evening from a number where the caller identified himself as Mamunul.
On April 12, the local Awami League issued a showcause notice to freedom fighter Waliyar. The notice was sent to him through a letter signed by Monayem and Farid over his alleged link with Hefazat.

Waliyar never informed the party leaders about his family's involvement with Hefazat; so, it is a risk that the organisational work plan of Awami League may be leaked through him, the letter said.
A satisfactory reply within the seven working days was also sought in the notice, but Waliyar did not respond to it.
On April 3, Mamunul Haque was found along with a woman, at a resort in Narayanganj's Sonargaon, whom he claimed to be his "second wife."

Mamunul fallout: Jharna's father to be ousted from AL
Alfadanga Union Awami League in Faridpur have decided to oust the father of claimed second wife of controversial Hefazat e Islam leader Mamunul Haque.
The decision was made in the local Awami League unit’s executive committee meeting on Thursday.
Waliur Rahman is the father of Jannat Ara Jharna, the woman at the centre of events at a Sonargaon resort where she was with Mamunul two weeks ago. Waliur is also an ex freedom fighter, former army member and member of Gopalpur union Awami League’s ward number four unit.
Gopalpur union AL’s president Md Monayem Khan, confirming the decision, said on April 12, a show cause notice was issued to Waliur Rahman seeking explanation on why he shouldn’t be banished from the party for his family's links with the Hefazat leader, who was arrested this week. He was asked to respond within 7 days.
As no response came, the decision was made to suspend Waliur temporarily, said the president.
President Monayem Khan further said, "We never got any proof of him mixing with any other parties but his family members following some other ideologies while he stays the president may risk confidentiality of the party."
As Waliur doesn’t use cell phone he couldn’t be contacted on the matter.
However, his wife Shiuli Begam said, "We are pro-Awami League family and he (Oaliar) is a freedom fighter and party’s union leader. There is no prospect of suspecting him."

8 jailed in Sylhet for inciting violence over Mamunul's arrest
Eight people have been jailed for inciting anarchy and violence among general mass over the arrest of Hefazat-e-Islam Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque in Zakiganj of Sylhet
The arrestees are: Sahab Uddin, 30, Zakaria, 32, Manzur Ahmed, 48, Shah Mortuza Ali Raju, 40, Zillur Rahman, 50, Humayun Azad, 45, Nurul Haque Khan, 47 and Kamil Ahmed, 22.
All of them are activists of BNP, Jamaat or Hefazat.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Zakiganj Police Station Abul Qasim confirmed the news to UNB.

He said, "The arrests were made on Monday night following a case filed against 17 named and several unnamed accused under the Special Powers Act."
"Operations are currently underway to identify and arrest the others involved,” he added.
According to police and local sources, a group of people, mainly activists and leaders of Hefazat, BNP and Jamaat brought out a procession protesting Mamunul’s arrest in Shahgali area of Zakiganj at around 10pm on Monday.
Earlier on April 18, Joint Secretary General of Hefajat-e-Islam, Mamunul Haque was arrested from a madrasa in Dhaka's Mohammadpur area.

He was arrested in connection with a vandalism case filed against him with Mohammadpur Police Station.
The much controversial Hefazat leader was produced before the court the following day where the court placed him on a 7-day remand.
