Rozina gives Goalanda a modern mosque
Popular Bangladeshi actress Rozina has got a modern mosque constructed in Rajbari district's Goalanda upazila, her birthplace.
The masjid is named ‘Ten Domes Ma Khadija Jame Mosque’ after her mother.
Former state minister for education and lawmaker of Rajbari-1 constituency, Kazi Keramat Ali, and Rozina jointly inaugurated the newly built mosque on Friday.

Bangladesh Film Artistes' Association president and Nirapad Sarak Chai chairman Ilias Kanchan, Goalanda upazila parishad chairman Mostafa Munshi, upazila nirbahi officer Md Azizul Haque Khan, Goalanda municipality mayor Nazrul Islam Mandal, Goalanda Awami League general secretary Biblab Ghose, among others, were present at the inaugural ceremony.

Twin sisters drown in Goalanda pond
Twin sisters drowned while taking bath in a pond at Goalanda Upazila Parishad premises in Rajbari district on Saturday.
Swapan Kumar Majumdar, officer-in-charge of Goalanda Police Station, said the 12-year old girls -Tapur and Tupur, daughter of Abdul Goni, had been living with their maternal grandmother since their parents got divorced.
Both the girls were students of class III of Moonstar Collegiate School in Goalanda upazila.
Anna Begum, grandmother of the two girls , used to work as a domestic help in a number of houses.

On Saturday afternoon, Tapur and Tupur went to the pond at Upazila Parishad Premises for taking bath and drowned there.
As the girls were not returning home after a long period of time, Anna Begum went to the pond and found them floating in the pond.
Later, they were taken to a local hospital where doctors declared them dead.

What a catch! Goalanda fisherman earns Tk 25,000 with one Catla
Gurudev Haldar, a local fisherman, caught an 18.2-kg Catla fish from the Padma River at Char Karneshna in Goalanda upazila early Saturday to change his fortune. Talking to local newsmen, the lucky fisherman of Pabna Kajirhat said he along with his associates went out on a predawn fishing mission in the river.

At one stage, Gurudev and his men netted the giant Catla and later sold it in an auction fetching a huge amount. Mohammad Chandu Mollah, a local fish trader, bought the fish at Tk 25,400 -- Tk 1,400 per kg – in the auction at a local fish market adjacent to Daulatdia Ghat in the morning. Now Chandu expects to sell it at Tk 1,500 per kg.

About the river condition and availability of fish, Chandu said, “The river water has started receding with the weakening of monsoon, and many fish like Catla, Rui, Boal, Pangas are now found in abundance. Fishermen from Manikganj and Pabna districts are having a good time with amazing catches,” he said. Mohamamd Rezaul Sharif, a fisheries official of Goalanda, said huge fish are expected to be netted now as Padma water keeps receding.

Children's fight over property delays 88-yr-old's funeral in Goalanda
Property disputes between blood relations are not uncommon in Bangladesh.
But the same reached a new low on Wednesday when an 88-year-old man's burial was delayed by over 27 hours as his five children slugged it out over the partition of their ancestral land in Dakkhin Pachuria Ambalpur village of Goalanda upazila.

Yeasin Molla, a farmer of the village, died at a hospital on Tuesday. His children brought their dead father back home that day only but soon started fighting over their family property and wealth as the body lay outside.
Local people soon alerted the Debgram Union chairman and all the children -- Bablu, Fulbaru, Rabeya, Mamtaz and Rahman -- were called to the house of the upazila chairman on Wednesday.
After discussions, a settlement was reached. But the burial got delayed over allegations of foul play. The body was taken to the Rajbari Hospital morgue around 2 pm on Wednesday for an autopsy.
Finally, after 27 hours, Yeasin was laid to eternal rest.

According to the other four children, Yeasin lived with Rahman, his youngest son. "And Rahman had forced Yeasin to bequeath the entire family property in his name."
A case was already filed at Rajbari District court, and Yeasin and his five children were all supposed to appear before the judge on Monday.
However, Yeasin fell sick on Monday and couldn't appear in the case, prompting the other children to level allegations of foul play against Rahman. They alleged that Rahman gave sedatives to their father.
However, Rahman refuted the allegations. “On Friday, my father fell sick and I took him to a private clinic where doctors prescribed some test and medicines. On Tuesday, my father’s condition deteriorated and the authorities of Goalanda Health Complex declared him dead on arrival."

Hafizul Islam, chairman of Debgram Union, said l, “The five children have been locked in a property dispute for long."
Mizanur Rahman Akond, sub-inspector at Goalanda Ghat Police Station, said the body was taken to the local hospital morgue for an autopsy "after we received a complaint of foul play".

Drive against soil lifting: 40 dredgers seized in Goalanda
A mobile court in a drive seized 40 dredgers, used for lifting soil or sand illegally, from Majlishpur Char on the bank of the Padma River in Goalanda upazila in the last two days until Thursday.
Rebayet Hayat, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said a vested quarter is lifting soil from the bank of the Padma river illegally taking the advantage of the lockdown imposed by the local administration due to coronavirus situation in the upazila.
A vast track of crops land caved in due to illegal soil/sand lifting, he said.
After getting complaint from the affected people, a mobile court led by the UNO conducted a drive in the area on Tuesday and Wednesday and seized 40 machines and two lakh meters of pipe from the area.
Later, the mobile court destroyed those.
Drive against illegal sand lifting will continue , he said.

An ambulance that falls silent
The lone ambulance of the 50-bed Upazila Health Complex of Goalanda remained out of service for the last 14 days due to the transfer of its driver as well as a technical problem, depriving patients of its emergency service.
