A court in Kishoreganj  on Monday sentenced a man to death for stabbing his wife to death in Bajitpur upazila in 2016. Supriya Rahman, judge of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1, handed down the verdict. The convict, Ismail alias Sagar Mia, son of the late Ayet Ali of Uttar Sararchar village in Bajitpur upazila, was tried in absentia. According to the case statement, Ismail had allegedly subjected his wife, Jharna Akter, 27, to physical and mental abuse since their marriage. On the evening of April 12, 2016, an altercation broke out between the couple while Jharna was cooking at her father’s house. At one stage, Ismail stabbed her with a knife, leaving her critically injured. Family members rushed Jharna to Bhagalpur Jahurul Islam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Following the incident, Jharna’s mother Zahera Begum filed a case with Bajitpur Police Station.

A 30-year-old unidentified man died on Wednesday after being run over by a vehicle in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area. The accident happened around 3:00 pm near the Jatrabari Bus Stand.
