Barishal Clash: Hearing on bail plea of 12 accused on Sept 2
Hearing on bail pleas of 12 Awami League men arrested in two cases filed over attacking Barisla Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s residence will be held on September 2.
Senior Metropolitan Magistrate Anisur Rahman announced the date on Sunday after receiving the bail petitions, said advocate Talukdar Md younus, lawyer of the defendants.
Earlier on August 25, nine accused were granted bail in the cases filed by the UNO and police.

On August 18, Ansar members clashed with a crowd of city corporation workers and AL, BCL activists when they stormed into the UNO’s residence at Sadar Upazila Complex in Barishal in a dispute over removing banners from Upazila Parishad premises.
Five people suffered bullet wounds during the clash. Of them two AL men lost their eye sights later.
Upazila Nirbahi officer Munibur Rahman of Barisal Sadar Upazila and Assistant sub-inspector of police Shahjalal Mallick filed two cases accusing 602 people including Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah of obstruction to government work and attempt to murder.

Twenty one people were arrested in this connection.

HC seeks explanation over delay in Pori Moni’s bail plea hearing
The High Court on Thursday issued a rule seeking explanation as to why a lower court order fixing September 13 for hearing the bail petition of Pori Moni in a case under the Narcotics Control Act should not be cancelled.
The court also asked why the bail application would not be heard within two days.
The respondents were asked to respond to the rule by September 1.

The virtual HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol issued the rule after hearing on a revision petition filed on behalf Pori Moni challenging the lower court order.
“ Why has the date of bail hearing been fixed after 21 days ? The decision curtailed the rights of the accused,” the HC observed .
On August 22, the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Emrul Kayesh set September 13 for hearing on the bail petition of Pori Moni in the case.

Later, she appealed to the High Court challenging its validity. The interim bail of the actress was also sought in the petition .
Lawyers ZI Khan Panna and Mozibur Rahman appeared for Pori Moni, while Assistant Attorney General Md Mizanur Rahman opposed the petition.

Munia’s death: HC refuses to hear Bashundhara MD’s anticipatory bail plea
The High Court on Thursday declined to hear the anticipatory bail petition filed by Managing Director of Bashundhara Group Sayem Sobhan Anvir in a case filed over abetting the suicide of 21-year-old Mosarat Jahan Munia.
The bench of Justice Mamunur Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman refused to hear the petition saying that it has no jurisdiction to hear any anticipatory bail during the lockdown.
A notice placed on the door of the courtroom in the morning reads, "Amid the current lockdown and Covid-19 situation, the court has ruled that it will not hear any anticipatory bail petition until further notice."
During virtual proceedings, the HC bench said, “The issue of the anticipatory bail petition was included in the cause list by mistake. We have no instruction on hearing an anticipatory bail plea during the lockdown. Therefore, the bench will not hear the petitions no 13 to 27 in the cause list.”
As per law, the accused must appear before court physically for a hearing on an anticipatory bail plea but the accused could be connected virtually with the court during the virtual hearing.

On Monday, police recovered the hanging body of Mosarat Jahan Munia, 21, daughter of late Shafiqur Rahman, a freedom fighter of Monoharpur in Cumilla district, from a flat in Dhaka’s Gulshan area.
Following the recovery of her body, the victim's sister, Nusrat Jahan, filed a case under section 306 of Bangladesh Penal Code with Gulshan Police Station around on Tuesday.
In the case, Nusrat Jahan made Sayem Sobhan Anvir, managing director of Bashundhara Group, the lone accused of abetting the death of the 21-year-old college student.
A Dhaka court on Tuesday issued a travel ban on Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

On Wednesday, Sayem Sobhan Anvir filed a petition with the High Court, seeking anticipatory bail in the case.

HC adjourns bail plea of OC Moazzem for 3 months
The High Court (HC) on Wednesday adjourned the bail petition filed by Moazzem Hossain, former officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Police Station in Feni, for three months, in a case filed over circulating a video statement of deceased madrasa girl Nusrat Jahan Rafi on social media.
