Holiday
Dhaka still in holiday mood
Dhaka city is still to get its usual look though the city dwellers have started returning to the capital after holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr and Pahela Baishakh.
The bustling capital looked empty with most of the roadside shops, shopping malls closed and few public and private vehicles plying the streets in the morning.
The government, semi-government, and private offices including banks and financial institutions opened today but there was a low presence of employees.
Officials and staff were seen exchanging Eid greetings with colleagues by embracing each other.
A small number of buses and private vehicles were seen plying the streets in Malibagh, Shantinagar, Gulshan, Firmgate , Dhamondi, Mirpur and Shahbagh areas in the morning.

Md Yousuf, an employee of a private bank, said, “Still a festive environment is prevailing in the city. There is no traffic jam or chaos on streets. It took me only 6 minutes to reach Gulshan from Rajarbagh area by car that usually takes 30 to 40 minutes on the other regular days due to traffic congestion. It’s a temporary relief for Dhaka dwellers.”
On the occasion of Eid, April 10, 11, and 12 (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) were public holidays. After Eid, there was a weekly holiday on Saturday, April 13, and a Bengali New Year holiday on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh on Sunday, April 14.
However, many of the government and private sector workers who went outside Dhaka to celebrate Eid took optional leave.
As a result, it will take a few more days to start the proceedings in full swing in the offices, courts, banks, and stock market.
Besides, schools and colleges will also open next week. Then the capital will return to normal.

DU scraps trust fund in late Holiday editor’s name
Dhaka University authority has scrapped a recently formed trust fund in the name of AZM Enayetullah Khan, the late editor of the weekly 'Holiday' magazine after facing extreme criticism.
The university authorities has declared that there will be no effectiveness and acceptance of the trust fund anymore as Enayetullah Khan was alleged of leaking confidential information of war during liberation war and humiliated Bangabandhu in his writings.
DU vice chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman said, "Establishing a fund in the name of such a person is contradictory to the ideology and values of the university."
Rashed Khan Menon, brother of Enayetullah Khan and also the president of Bangladesh Workers Party, launched this fund to be established at Dhaka University's Mass Communication and Journalism Department.

Jam-free Dhaka streets Thursday, Thanks to holidays
After passing horrific time stuck in severe traffic jam in the past two days, commuters in Dhaka breathed a sigh of relief on Thursday as many residents left the capital on a 3-day vacation.
The number of vehicles was relatively thin in the capital as Thursday was the public holiday to be followed by two weekends. Many Dhaka dwellers left the capital for home or tourist spots and resorts to spend the holidays.
But the huge rush of holidaymakers created long tailbacks on different highways.

Apple’s holiday iPhone sales surge despite supply shortages
Apple shook off supply shortages that have curtailed production of iPhones and other popular devices to deliver its most profitable holiday season yet.
The results posted Thursday for the final three months of 2021 help illustrate why Apple is looking even stronger at the tail end of the pandemic than when the crisis began two years ago.
At that point, Apple’s iPhone sales had been flagging as consumers began holding on to their older devices for longer periods. But now the Cupertino, California, company can’t seem to keep up with the steadily surging demand for a device that has become even more crucial in the burgeoning era of remote work.

“IPhone has never been more popular,” Apple CEO Tim Cook crowed during a conference call with analysts. The company’s Mac computers and, to a lesser extent, iPads also continue to proliferate. With the iPhone leading the way, Apple disclosed it now has more than 1.8 billion devices worldwide now in use.
Apple’s inability to fully satisfy the voracious appetite for iPhones stems from a pandemic-driven shortage of computer chips that’s affecting the production of everything from automobiles to medical devices.
But Apple so far has navigated the shortfalls “in almost Teflon-like fashion,” Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives said in a Thursday research note. That deft management enabled Apple to report iPhone sales of $71.63 billion for the October-December period, a 9% increase from the same time in the previous year.

Its shares gained more than 5% in Thursday’s extended trading after the Apple’s fiscal first-quarter numbers came out.
The supply issues looming around Apple’s devices have magnified the importance of the company’s services division, which is fueled by commissions from digital transactions on iPhone apps, subscriptions to music, video streaming and repair plans.
The up to 30% commissions Apple collects from apps distributed through its exclusive app store have become a focal point of a fierce legal battle that unfolded in a high-stakes trial year, as well as proposed reforms recently introduced in the U.S. Senate seeking to down the company’s barriers preventing consumers from using alternative payment systems.
Read Samsung Electronics' revenue hits record high in 2021
For now, though, the services division is still booming. Its revenue in the past quarter hit $19.52 billion, a 24% increase.
Apple is widely believed to be maneuvering toward another potentially huge money-making opportunity with the introduction of an augmented reality headset that would project digital images and information while its users interact with other physical objects and people. True to its secretive form, the company has never said it is working on that kind of technology.
But Cook has openly shared his enthusiasm for the potential of augmented reality in past public presentations, and reiterated that point during Thursday’s conference call.

“We see a lot of potential in that space, and are investing accordingly,” he said in response to a question.
Some analysts believe the long-rumored headset could finally roll out later this year — unless it’s delayed by supply shortages.
