A Rajshahi court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for raping a minor girl in Charghat upazila of the district around 10 years back. Rajshahi Women and Children Repression and Prevention Tribunal-2 Judge Muhmmad Hasanuzzaman also fined the convict Tk 20,000, in default of which he will have to serve one more month imprisonment in jail, according to Syed Shamsunnahar, public prosecutor of the court. Read more: Father, son get life imprisonment for murder in Mymensingh The convict is Ujjal Ali, 35, a resident of Purbo Kalabiparea village under Charghat upazila. According to the case statement, the accused raped the class five-grader after taking her to a sugarcane field when the victim was returning home after providing her father food at a cropland on September 27, 2012. The accused threatened to kill the victim if she disclosed the matter to anybody. However, a woman whose identity has not been disclosed witnessed the crime and informed the victim’s parents. The 5th-grader’s father filed a case under Women and Children Repression and Prevention Act against the accused on the following day. Police pressed chargesheet accusing him while the court framed the chargesheet against him. A minor girl died of snakebite in Nandigram upazila of the district Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Sohamoni, 3, daughter of Abdus Sattar of Doupukuria village in the upazila. Morshedul Bari, chairman of Bhatra union parishad, said the child was playing at the backyard of its house in the morning. She was rushed to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where physicians pronounced her dead, the chairman added.

Two minor siblings allegedly drowned in a lake at Karbaripara in Alikadam upazila of Bandarban district early Saturday. The deceased were identified as Marufa Jannat, 7, and Mahfuza Jannat, 40, both daughters of Mohammad Mahmudullah of the area. The two siblings went missing on Friday afternoon after stepping out to fetch some water, said Abul Kalam, chairman of No 2 Choikhong union. Around 2am, they found the body of Marufa floating in the lake. Subsequently, Mahfuza's body was fished out of the lake. Local people suspect that they might have met the watery grave while trying to pluck mangoes from a tree adjacent to the lake.

Police arrested a man on Sunday on charge of  raping his sister-in-law, a 7th grader, in Singpara village in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila. The arrestee was identified as Sumon,27, son of Abdur Sabur from Singpara village in Salandar union. Sumon was arrested after a rape case was filed at sadar police station following the complaint of the girl’s father earlier in the day. The couple has a 2-year-old daughter.   On February 10, the plaintiff went to visit his son-in-law along with his younger daughter. The girl stayed back even though the father returned home.   Later that night Sumon allegedly raped the girl covering her mouth with a scarf. When she fell sick and informed the family, they took her to Thakurgaon General Hospital. Police arrested an Arabic teacher from Satkania upazila in Chattogram on Sunday night for raping a 9-year-old student. The arrestee was Abdul Malek, teacher of a local Maktab in Moneabad area of Purangor union. Maktab refers to a type of elementary school for learning Quran and Arabic. On Sunday night police arrested the teacher during a drive following a complaint filed by the student’s mother at the Satkania police station. Officer-in-Charge of Satkania police station Anwar Hossain said according to the complaint, the girl was a regular student of that Maktab. As the student suddenly fell sick on Saturday, she informed her mother of the incident and later a case was filed under Women and Children Repression Prevention act. A couple drowned and their minor daughter went missing when a boat overturned in the Titas River due to strong current in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district on Monday. The deceased were identified as Riyad, 30, son of Dulal Mia of Kaitala, Riyad’s wife Liza Akter, 25. The couple’s only daughter Maria, 7 went missing. Nure Alam, inspector of Nabinagar police station, said the couple along with their child went for a boat ride in the river. Three people managed to swim ashore while Riyad, Liza and Maria went missing. Later, local people recovered the bodies and sent those to the local hospital.
