Youth arrested for stealing money dies in police custody
A youth died under custody of Hatirjheel police Station in the city early Saturday.
Though police claimed that the youth identified as Rumman Sheikh, alias Sumon, (25) committed suicide, family members said he was tortured to death.
However, two policemen were suspended in connection with the incident and a 3-member inquiry committee has also formed in this connection.
The temporarily suspended policemen are - Hatirjheel police station SI Hemayet Hossain and constable Md. Zakaria.
Talking to reporters at Hatirjheel Police Station on Saturday evening, Deputy Commissioner(DC- Tejgaon Division) HM Azimul Haque said a case was filed with Hatirjheel police station in connection with stealing of Tk 53 lakh from the office of Unilever's Pureit Company on August 15.
Police arrested three people identified as Al Amin, Sohel Rana and Anik Hossain in connection with the incident. They are now in jail, the DC said.
Rumman Sheikh was identified by analyzing the CCTV footage of the place of occurrence and also interrogating the three arrestees. Later, police arrested Rumman from his house in Rampura Mahanagar project area on Friday afternoon and recovered Tk 3,13,700 from his possession. Then he was kept in police custody around 11 pm, he said.

The DC said that Rumman Sheikh was supposed to be sent to the court on Saturday morning. But he hanged himself from an iron grill with the trousers he was wearing at around 3:32 am on early Saturday. " It was seen in the CCTV footage and this footage was also shown to the deceased's wife and relatives," he added.
He also said that SI Hemayet Hossain, who was Duty Officer on Friday night, and constable Md. Zakaria have been suspended for negligence of duty.
Besides, a three-member inquiry committee headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC) Tejgaon Industrial Zone Hafiz Al Farooq has been constituted.
The DC also dismissed the allegation of torturing to death by the family members saying that no such incident took place.
Meanwhile, local residents and relatives rushed to Hatirjheel police station after hearing the news of Rumman's death on Saturday afternoon. They protested in front of the police station alleging that Rumman was tortured to death under police custody and also demanded justice for this murder.
During the protest, Suman's wife alleged that police demanded Tk 5 lakh from them. Police killed Rumman as they failed to meet their demand. 'I want justice,' she said.
A sister-in-law of Rumman, who was present in front of the police station, said that her brother-in-law (Dula Bhai) came to his brother's house in Hatirjheel Madhubagh area on Friday on the anniversary of his mother's death. A team of Hatirjheel police station went to that house and arrested him saying that he was involved in stealing money, she said.
Police conducted a search of the whole house but did not get anything and then left the house taking her brother-in-law, she said.
About showing CCTV footage, she said, "We have been shown a little CCTV footage, showing him taking off his pants and going towards the fan. But the police did not show footage of committing suicide. But where was the police at that time. They killed him and then hanged him. We want justice.”

Youth arrested for raping girl in Manikganj
Police on Friday arrested a youth on charge of raping a 12-year-old girl at a fair in Singair upazila of Manikgaj district, said police.
The arrestee was identified as Sharif Miah, 22, son of Md Shahidullah of Khaserchar village in the upazila.
Safiqul Islam, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Singair Police Station, said the teenager was working with her parents at their makeshift snacks shop at a four-day fair organized marking the holy Ashura in the Khaserchar area.
Sharif, also a tea seller of the fair, took the girl to an orchard of papaya in absence of the victim’s parents at the shop and raped her over the night, said he.

Though the parents looked for her the entire night, she returned home in the morning and disclosed the matter to them, the OC also said.
“The accused was arrested from the Khaserhcar area when we came to know about the incident through Dhalla police camp, he said adding that the victim was also sent to Manikganj Sadar Hospital for medical test.
The victim’s father filed a case against the accused under Women and Children Repression and Prevention Act at the police station, added the police officer.

Youth arrested on charge of hurting communal harmony
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have arrested Facebook page admin Ashish Mallick, 30, from Banani in the city on on charge of hurting communal harmony through false propaganda on social media.
Based on secret information, an operational team of the Rab-1 conducted a drive in Banani area on Tuesday evening and arrested Ashish, said ASP (Ops officer) Noman Ahmed of the Rab-1.
One mobile phone was recovered from his possession during the drive.

During preliminary interrogation, Ashish confessed to his involvement in cybercrime. His village home is in Chottagram dstrict and he was running a coaching centre after graduating from Dhaka College.
During interrogation Rab gathered that the arrested person opened a Facebook page on October 16 and posted various provocative statements on that page as well as from his personal ID. He and a few other like-minded people worked as admins. Very soon the number of members and followers of that page exceeded several thousand. From this Facebook page, false information and provocative posts were given about the Cumilla incident and attempts were made to destroy communal harmony and spread violence in Bangladesh, ASP Noman said.

The Facebook page was being uploaded with videos of various atrocities that took place in neighboring countries to create fear in the minds of the people. Accused Ashish was involved in a conspiracy to establish this country as a communal state by hash tagging every post, he said.

Youth arrested over university student murder in Dhaka
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members arrested a youth on Thursday for his suspected involvement in the killing of a private university student in the city’s Karwanbazar area on Tuesday.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-2 conducted a drive and arrested Md Tuhin, 20 from Munnunagar area in Gazipur, said a press release of Rab-2.
According to Rab, during interrogation, Tuhin confessed to killing Keshob Roy Papon,24, a student of Computer Science department of Sonargaon University, during snatching his valuables.

Further drive to arrest other criminals involved in the murder will be conducted following information gleaned from Tuhin, they said.
On October, 5, Keshob Roy was hacked by some miscreants in front of Hotel Marine at Tejturi Bazar in the city.

The miscreants fled the scene leaving Papon injured. Doctors announced him dead after locals rushed him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
On October 6, Papon’s uncle filed a murder case at Tejgaon police station.
