Global Covid death toll crosses 6 million
The global death toll from Covid-19 has now crossed six million, with the pandemic entering into its third year.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 447,602,602 while the death toll from the virus reached 6,006,508 Tuesday morning.
Despite vaccine availability, the United States is nearing one million reported deaths on its own, the biggest official death toll in the world, reports AP.
The US has recorded 79,337,559 cases so far and 960,269 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.

India's Covid-19 tally rose to 42,970,454 on Monday as 4,362 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, as per the federal health ministry data.
Besides, 108 deaths due to the pandemic since Sunday morning took the total death toll to 515,241.
Meanwhile, Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January last year, registered 29,077,831 cases as of Tuesday, while its Covid death toll rose to 652,648.
Global vaccine disparity continues, with only 6.95% of people in low-income countries fully vaccinated, compared to more than 73% in high-income nations, according to Our World in Data.

Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh reported four more Covid-linked deaths with 436 fresh cases in 24 hours till Monday morning, health authorities said.
The daily positivity rate slightly decreased to 2.18 per cent from Sunday’s 2.63 per after testing 20,009 samples during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
On Sunday, Bangladesh reported eight Covid-linked deaths with 529 fresh cases.
The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 29,089 and the caseload to 19,47,702.
Of the 52 deaths recorded from February 28 to March 6, some 40.4 per cent received Covid vaccines while 59.6 per cent did not, the DGHS said.
Among the new deceased, three were men and one was a woman.
Three of the deaths were reported from Dhaka division while one from Sylhet division.
Meanwhile, the mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.49 per cent.
However, the recovery rate rose to 94.82 per cent with the recovery of 3,546 more patients during the 24-hour period.

Global Covid cases near 241 million
The overall number of global Covid cases is approaching 241 million even with mass inoculations underway in several countries.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 240, 378,292 while the death tally from the virus reached 4,894,371 on Sunday morning.
The US has recorded 44,916,322 cases to date and more than 724,153 people have died so far from the virus in the country, as per the university data.
Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January, registered 21,638,726 cases as of Saturday, while its Covid death toll has risen to 603,152.
India's COVID-19 tally rose to 34,053,573 on Saturday, as 15,981 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the health ministry's latest data.
Besides, 166 deaths due to the pandemic were recorded since Friday morning, taking the total death toll to 451,980.

Situation in Bangladesh
Covid-19 in Bangladesh claimed six more lives and infected another 293 people in 24 hours till Saturday morning.
The daily-case positivity rate dropped to 1.88 per cent today declining slightly from Friday’s 2.09 per cent.
It is the lowest daily cases logged in the country since May 15 when 261 people contracted the virus in a single day.
On October 14, Bangladesh logged seven Covid-related deaths.
With the fresh numbers, the Covid fatalities reached 27,752 today while the caseload climbed to 1,565,174, according to the Directorate General of the Health services (DGHS).
Of the latest deceased, four were men and two were women.
However, the mortality rate remained static at 1.77 per cent.

Besides, the recovery rate increased slightly to 97.58 per cent, with 442 more patients getting cured during the period.
So far, 1,527,333people have recovered from the deadly virus infections, the DGHS added.

Global Covid caseload top 174 million
Amid emergence of new variants and efforts to achieve vaccine equality, the global Covid-19 caseload has crossed the 174-million mark.
The global case count and fatalities stand at 174,766,343 and 3,769,345 respectively as of Friday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
To date, some 2,242, 825,732 people have been vaccinated globally, as per JHU data.

The US, which is the world's worst-hit country in terms of both cases and deaths, has so far logged 33,427,489 cases and 598,728 deaths, Johns Hopkins figures reveal.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 29,273,338 on Friday with 91,266 new cases reported in 24 hours, said the federal Health Ministry of Inida.
India reported a record high of 6,148 Covid-19 deaths on Thursday.
However, the number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 24 crore, the Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday.
Besides, the new fatalities pushed up the death toll to 363,097, according to the Ministry.
Brazil registered 3,402 more deaths from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the nationwide tally to 482,135, the health ministry said on Thursday.
A total of 89,802 new infections were detected during the period, raising the national caseload to 17,215,159, the ministry said.
Brazil has the world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll, after the United States, and the third-largest caseload, behind the U.S. and India.

Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh on Thursday registered 36 more coronavirus-related deaths and 2,537 fresh cases in 24 hours, with the Covid situation worsening post the detection of the Delta variant in different parts of the country.
Although district administrations have imposed restrictions in most of the frontier districts to bring the situation under control, the infection and death rates are on the rise.
The latest death toll pushed up the fatalities to 12,949. The Covid-19 death toll crossed the 12,000-mark in Bangladesh on May 11.
With the new cases, the total caseload rose to 8,17,819, said the Directorate General of Health Services.

Global Covid-19 cases cross 150 million
With new variants of Covid-19 spreading rapidly, the global Covid-19 caseload on Friday crossed the grim milestone of 150 million.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count and fatalities now stand at 150,102,206 and 3,161,37, respectively.
The US, the world's worst-hit country in terms of cases and deaths, have recorded 32,283,801 cases with 575,070 fatalities to date, as per the JHU data.
Neighbouring India’s total Covid cases have now crossed the 18-million mark. The country’s caseload and death toll stand at 18, 376,524 and 204,832, respectively, as of Friday morning.

India had thought the worst was over when cases dropped in September. But infections began increasing in February, and on Thursday, 379,257 new confirmed cases, a global record, pushed the country’s total past 18.3 million, second only to the U.S.
India has set a daily global record for seven of the past eight days, with a seven-day moving average of nearly 350,000 infections. Daily deaths have nearly tripled in the past three weeks, reflecting the intensity of the latest surge. And the country’s already teetering health system is under immense strain, prompting multiple allies to send help, reports AP.
Brazil on Thursday registered 3,074 more deaths from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, raising the national count to 401,186, the world's second-highest corona death toll after the US, the Ministry of Health said.
The ministry said that tests detected 69,076 new Covid-19 cases, taking its nationwide tally to 14,590,678.
April has been the month with the most deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic in the Latin American nation, with about 73,074 fatalities having been reported to date, compared with 66,000 deaths for March.
Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh on Thursday recorded 88 more coronavirus-related deaths and 2,341 new cases as the country struggles to stop the deadly virus spread.
The daily infection rate dropped to 9.39 percent from Wednesday’s 10.48 percent but the mortality rate rose to 1.50 percent. However, the infection rate in the country came down below 10 percent after over a month.
As of Thursday, 756,955 cases and 11,393 deaths have been recorded, the Directorate General of Health Services said in a handout.
The number of recoveries now stands at 677,101 (89.45 %) according to the directorate.
Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 last year and the first death on the 18th of that month.

Lockdown extended
The disturbing surge in Covid cases prompted the government to go for a lockdown from early April. Having failed to achieve the intended result, it imposed a complete lockdown from April 11 and extended it to April 28.
On Wednesday, the government issued a circular extending the lockdown till May 5, as there is no improvement in the Covid-19 situation.
However, shops and shopping malls will remain open from 10am to 8pm during the extended period, he said.
Vaccination
Bangladesh launched a vaccination drive on February 7 with Oxford-AstraZeneca doses it acquired from the Serum Institute of India.
Bangladesh signed an agreement with Serum for 30 million doses. But a record number of cases in India has made the delivery of the doses uncertain.

However, BDGHS chief Prof ABM Khurshid Alam has assured citizens that Bangladesh will get 2.1 million doses of the vaccine by the first week of May.
Moreover, the government on Thursday approved the emergency use of Sinopharm, a Chinese Covid-19 vaccine. It approved the emergency use of Sputnik V vaccine of Russia a day earlier.
