Ten top leaders  of Khelafat Majlish were arrested in the past 24 hours until Thursday morning in connection with the clashes and vandalism carried out by Hefazat-e-Islam men in Brahmanbaria last month. Md Abu Taher, President of Sarail Upazila  Khelafat Majlish confessed to his involvement in Brahmanbaria mayhem, saying it was a part of a conspiracy to oust the government from power, said police. Besides, nine more Hefazat activists were arrested. On March 27, at least five people were killed and around 50 others, including 25 policemen, injured in clashes between members of the law enforcement agencies and locals during Hefazat's demonstrations at Nandanpur in Sadar upazila. They had staged the protests against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bangladesh visit. They had also attacked a Chattogram-bound train at Talshohor Rail Station in Brahmanbaria town. Also read: Brahmanbaria mayhem: Hefazat leader among 10 arrested Also, the Hefazat supporters vandalised several private and government establishments, including the municipality building, Alauddin Music Academy, and Foirtala Bus Stand in Sadar upazila. They had also attacked Brahmanbaria Press Club and confined some journalists to the premises.

Twenty-four more people were arrested in the past 24 hours in connection with the clashes and vandalism by Hefazat-e-Islam activists and supporters in Brahmanbaria last month, police said Friday. The arrests were made from different parts of the district, according to the special branch of district police. So far, 54 cases have been filed and 261 people arrested over the violence, the police said. Eighteen cases have been filed so far and 21 arrested over clashes and vandalism in Brahmanbaria for three days until Sunday. Fifteen cases were filed with Sadar Model Police Station, two with Ashuganj Police Station, and one with Sarail Police Station on charges of vandalism and arson attack, police sources said. Over 10,000 were made accused in the cases, mostly unnamed. Of the accused, Sadar police arrested 18 and Ashuganj police three, they said. On March 28, Hefajat called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal protesting police action on their anti-Modi processions in Dhaka, Chattogram and other districts. Also, the hartal supporters carried out vandalism and arson attacks on government and private establishments.

At least five people were killed and around  50 others, including 25 police members, injured in clashes between law enforcers and locals during demonstrations at Nandanpur in Sadar upazila on Saturday. They staged the demonstrations against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh and chanted various slogans against his visit. Police and witnesses said a group of activists of Hefazat-e-Islam took position on Dhaka-Sylheht Highway in Nandanpur area in the afternoon and started demonstrating right there against Modi’s visit and the killing of people in Brahmanbaria and Chittagong on Friday. Also read: Four killed in clashes with cops in Chattogram The clash began as the members of police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) tried to disperse them. Hearing the news of the clash, local people also joined the demonstrations and attacked the law enforcers, forcing them to fire several rounds of bullet, leaving many people injured. He said they have so far declared five of the injured dead. The identity of another dead could not be known yet.
