Attempted rape victim commits suicide in Bogura: 2 arrested
Police arrested two people including the main accused in a case filed over suicide of an attempted rape victim in Bogura’s Dhunat upazila on Saturday.
The arrestees were identified as Bablu Mia, 40, son of Kanu Sarker from Rudrabaria village and Abu Taher, 50, son of Ali from Koigati village.
Kripa Sindhu, Officer-in-Charge of Dhunat police station said they were arrested after filing a case following the complaint of victim’s father Fazlul Haque accusing some seven people including Bablu on Friday.

Deceased Lipi Khatun, 18, was a resident of Kaigati village of Dhunat upazila and a former student of Jalshuka Habibur Rahman Degree College.
According to the case statement, Babul Mia, of the same village, used to tease Lipi for the past two years.
Lipi’s father complained about this to the village leaders aka Matabbars but they didn’t get any solution.
After the complaint against him, Babul became even more aggressive.
On April 12 morning, when no one was home, Babul with his companion Rafiq went to Lipi's house and tried to rape her. At one point, hearing her scream, neighbors rushed to her room but Babul and Rafiq escaped.

The victim poisoned herself as the incident became a topic of conversation for the locals.
Her relatives first admitted her to Dhunat Upazila Health Complex from where she was shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.
On April 13, she was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where she died while undergoing treatment on Thursday.

Pregnant woman raped by "brother-in-law" in Bandarban
A pregnant woman was raped allegedly by her brother in-law and his associate at Lama upazila in Bandarban early hours of Thursday, police said.
The crime occurred around 2 am at Boidyavita area in Ruposhipara union when the woman went out to washroom.
The attackers forcefully took her behind the house and locked her two children from outside.
The woman used to live with her children in that house as her husband works abroad.

The woman said, the miscreants also took away cash and gold jewelry from the house before they locked the house.
Neighbours found her unconscious and tied with a tree on Thursday morning hearing the cries of her two children locked inside the house.
They then informed police.

The woman filed a case against her husband’s step brother Jaynal Abedin and another unidentified person at Lama police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act later on Thursday, said Md Shahidul Islam Chowdhury, Officer-in-Charge of Lama police station.
He said legal actions will be taken against the accused soon after investigation.

Writ seeks cancellation of Evidence Act provisions on rape victims’ character
A writ petition was submitted before the High Court on Sunday seeking abolition of two provisions of the Evidence Act, 1872, which allow raising questions about the character of rape victims who are usually women.
Lawyer Sara Hossain filed the petition on behalf of three rights organizations- Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust, Ain O Salish Kendra and Naripokkho before the HC bench of justice M Enayetur Rahim and Md Mostafizur Rahman.
The petition sought a rule on why section 155 (4) and 146 (3) of the Evidence Act will not be deemed unconstitutional and not be abolished, said Sara Hossain.

The lawyer said, “According to these sections woman who files complaint of rape and sexual harassment is generally presumed of immoral character and her character and background can be questioned and inquired in the court.”
Rights groups have been campaigning against these provisions for long, said Sara adding that they are now seeking intervention from the High Court.
She said the hearing on the petition is likely to be held next week.

Section 155(4) of the act says, "When a man is prosecuted for rape or an attempt to ravish, it may be shown that the prosecutrix was of generally immoral character.”
Meanwhile section 146 (3) says during cross examination a witness can be questioned to shake his credit, by injuring his character, although the answer to such questions might tend directly or indirectly to criminate him or might expose or tend directly or indirectly to expose him to a penalty or confiscation.
