Notre Dame College student’s death: DSCC cleaning staff Harun remanded
A Dhaka court on Saturday placed Dhaka South City Corporation(DSCC) cleaning staff Md Harun on a 2-day remand in a case filed in connection with the death of a Notre Dame College student in a road crash.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mainul Islam passed the order after investigation officer of the case Anisur Rahman, sub-inspector of Paltan police station, sought a 7-day remand for interrogating Md Harun.
Meanwhile, the defense lawyer submitted a petition seeking his bail which the court rejected after the state side opposed it.
On Friday Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members detained DSCC cleaner Md Harun who confessed that he has been driving DSCC garbage truck regularly since 2020 without having a license.

On Wednesday, he allowed another cleaning staff Russel Khan to drive the vehicle violating the rules as he was absent on the day.
On Thursday, a press release DSCC said, cleaning staff Md Harun a was terminated for taking allotment of the truck through illegal means.
Besides, a departmental case was filed against designated driver of DSCC Md Iran Mia and he was suspended for allowing someone else to drive a truck that was illegally allotted, said DSCC.
Earlier on Thursday, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate placed cleaning staff Russel Khan on a three-day remand in the case.
On Wednesday, Naim Hasan, a 17-year-student of Notre Dame College, was killed when a garbage truck of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) hit him at Golchattar in the city’s Gulistan area while crossing road.

Patrol police in the area detained Russel Khan, who was driving the DSCC vehicle, while he was fleeing and seized the truck, said Md A Ahad, deputy police commissioner of Motijheel division of DMP.
A case was filed at Paltan police station in this regard following a complaint lodged by Naim’s father, he said.
Russel was neither appointed by DSCC as a driver nor he has any driving license, said the police official.
Cleaning staff Harun used to allow Russel to drive the vehicle in his absence, he said.

Pathao rider killed in city road crash
A motorbike rider of Pathao, a ride sharing app, was killed in a road accident in airport area of Dhaka early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Yusuf Mia, 20, son of Ansar Mia, hailing from Boro Bhag village of Alfadanga Upazila in Faridpur District.
Victim’s cousin Robin Mia said Yusuf used to live in a rented house at Uttara.
When he reached airport an unidentified vehicle hit his motorbike around 2:30am, leaving him seriously injured.
Later, he was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead, said Mamunur Rashid, sub-inspector of Airport Police Station.
The body has been kept at the morgue for an autopsy, he said.

A Dhaka court on Thursday placed a garbage truck driver on a three-day remand in a case filed over the death of a Notre Dame College student in a road crash.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain passed the order after investigation officer of the case Anisur Rahman, Sub-Inspector of Paltan police station, sought a 7-day remand for interrogating driver Russel Khan.

Cyclist killed in city road crash
A cyclist was killed in the city’s Hatirjheel area after being hit by a microbus on Thursday noon.
The deceased was identified as Monir Hossain, 55, son of Hazil Uddin of Chandpur’s Shahrashti.
The incident occurred in front of the MyTV office. The cyclist got seriously injured as he fell on the road after the speeding microbus hit him.

He was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the same microbus in a critical situation where he died at around 2.30 pm.
Hospital sources said that the microbus driver managed to escape as soon as Monir died.

Mohammad Bachchu Mia, in-charge (inspector) of the DMCH police outpost, said that the body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
The incident has been informed to the concerned police station, he added.

Two killed in Rajshahi road crash
Two people, including a woman, were killed after a truck collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw in Murailipur of Paba upazila in Rajshahi on Wednesday afternoon.
One of the deceased was identified as Ansar Ali, 40, while the identity of the woman could not be known immediately.
Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defence Senior Station Officer Abdur Rauf said a Chapainawabganj-bound truck hit an auto-rickshaw at 2:45pm, killing two people on the spot and injuring two others.

Police have recovered the bodies from the spot, he said.
Road accidents in Bangladesh
Road accidents in Bangladesh claim hundreds of lives every year.
At least 484 people were killed and 673 others injured in as many as 427 road accidents in January this year.
According to Road Safety Foundation (RSF), the accident rate increased by 25.58 percent while fatalities rose by 8.76 percent in January compared to the same period last year.

At least 445 lives were lost in 340 road accidents in January 2020, according to RSF.
In a report released in February last year, the World Bank said Bangladesh needs to invest an estimated $7.8 billion over the next decade to halve its road crash fatalities.
The report attributed the high death rate on Bangladesh’s roads to a lack of investment in systemic, targeted, and sustained road safety programmes.
