Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday paid tributes to former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru MP (Cumilla-5), also the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law Justice and Parliamentary affairs. She paid the homage by placing a wreath at his coffin draped with the red-green national flag on Thursday after a namaz-e-janaza of the valiant freedom fighter. Also read:Ex-law minister Abdul Matin Khasru dies On behalf of the Speaker, the serjeant-at-arms of Parliament placed the wreath on the coffin of Matin Khasru, also the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president, at the premise of the Supreme Court, said a release from Parliament secretariat. Besides, Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah paid tributes to Awami League’s presidium member Abdul Matin Khasru. On his behalf, an assistant deputy serjeant-at-arms placed a wreath on his coffin there, said another release. Following his namaz-e-janaza, Abdul Matin Khasru was given the state guard of honour there by the district administration. Then people paid their last respect to the valiant freedom fighter. Matin Khasru, the five-time MP, died of Covid-19 on Wednesday afternoon at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka at the age of 72. He served as the law minister during the Awami League-led government of 1996-2001. He was elected the SCBA president on March 16 last.

Former law minister and freedom fighter Abdul Matin Khasru was laid to rest at his family graveyard in Cumilla after namaz-e-janaza in his home district on Thursday. His third funeral prayer was held on the Ananda Pilot Government High School grounds in Burichong Upazila sadar. The fourth one took place at 4pm at Bhagaban Government High School grounds before he was buried. Khasru, who was elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association in March this year, died on Wednesday at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka. He was 71. The Awami League presidium member is survived by his two children and wife. Born on February 12, 1950 in Brahmanpara upazila’s Mirpur village, Khasru passed SSC from Madhabpur Government High School before enrolling at Cumilla Victoria College.  After graduation, he studied LLB at Cumilla Law College and joined Cumilla Judge’s Court in 1978 and enrolled as a High Court lawyer in July 1982. Khasru was first elected an MP in 1991, then in 1996, 2008, 2014 and 2018. During his tenure as the law minister, he played a vital role in scrapping the indemnity ordinance, clearing the way for the trial of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s killing. He enjoyed huge popularity in both the political and legal arena.
