ACC investigating Hefazat leaders Babunagri, Mamunul for graft, fund embezzlement
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an investigation against over 50 Hefazat-e-Islam leaders including Junaid Babungari and Mamunul Haque on charges of embezzling funds and corruption.
They have allegedly embezzled a huge sum of money from the organisation's funds, various madrassas, orphanages, Islamic institutions and foreign aid for religious purposes.
The decision to investigate was taken by the commission after the detectives of Bangladesh Bank and the ACC found truth in the allegation.
ACC sources said that a team of eight members has been formed, led by Akhtar Hossain Azad.

People involved with Hefazat violence to be punished: Home Minister
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Sunday said that despite talks with the leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam, people who were involved in violence will be brought to book.
He came up with the remarks at a function organised by Dhaka North City Awami League at Rajdhani School premises.
The Home Minister said that people are being arrested after analysing video footages of Hefazat's violence that spread across districts.

Despite discussions with the group, those who participated in the violence will be punished, he added.
The minister said that those who are involved in arson, vandaliism, and caused lives to be lost must be punished.

He said the law enforcement is not making any mass arrests or harassing anyone said.
The Home Minister said Hefazat is a non-political group and there is no provision of doing politics on its policies. Although many disagree with it, he said.

BNP-Jamaat behind recent Hefazat violence: Minister
Information Minister Hasan Mahmud on Saturday said the arrested Hefazat leaders recognised the involvement of BNP-Jamaat alliance in the violence carried out in the country last month.
"You’ve seen that the Economic Times of India and some local newspapers have reported on how BNP-Jamaat alliance actively participated in the violence and funded the miscreants…Pakistani intelligence also helped them,” he said.

Hasan Mahmud came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after inaugurating a food distribution programme in his hometown Rangunia via online.
He said the recent violence were not isolated events, as those were part of a bigger plan by the BNP-Jamaat alliance to grab power by ousting the government.

"No one involved with the incident will be spared," he warned.

2 more senior Hefazat leaders arrested from Dhaka
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested two Dhaka city unit leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam from the city’s Baridhara and Mohammadpur areas on Saturday.
The arrestees are Hefazat-e-Islam Dhaka city unit president Junaid Al Habib and its assistant general secretary Jalal Uddin Ahmed.

Contacted, Joint Commissioner (DB) of the DMP Mahbub Alam said Junaid Al Habib, also Hefazat’s central joint secretary general, was arrested from a Madrasa of Baridhara just before Iftar on Saturday.
Besides, Hefazat city unit assistant secretary general Jalal Uddin Ahmed, who is also central committee Assistant Secretary General, was arrested from his Mohammadpur residence at around 2:00 pm, the Joint Commissioner (DB) said.

Replying to a question, he said the two Hefazat leaders were arrested in connection with the case filed with Motijheel police station for the mayhem carried out in 2013 and also for the case filed with Paltan police station in March last month in connection with the violence in Baitul Mukkarram Mosque area (during Modi's visit).
On Friday afternoon the DB also arrested another leader of the religious organisation, Jubair Ahmed, from Lalbagh.

With the arrest of the two Hefazat leaders, the number of arrests of Hefazat leaders rose to seven by the DB police from the city in recent weeks.
