Suspended Dewanganj mayor Shahnewaz Shahan Shah was detained by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a government official during a programme on Victory Day. A RAB team conducted a drive at Hotel De Meridian in Dhaka’s Uttara area and detained Shahnewaz this morning, ASP Imran Khan, assistant director (legal and media wing) at RAB HQ, told UNB. During the drive, RAB men seized drugs including Yaba, marijuana, and cash Tk 3 lakh from his possession, director of the Legal and Media Wing of RAB Commander Khandaker Al Moin said at a press briefing after the detention. Police have arrested three men, including a school teacher, for allegedly assaulting a minor folk singer by shaving off his head in Shibganj upazila of Bogura district. The arrestees have been identified as Mezbaul Islam, 52, a teacher at Gujia High School, Shafiul Islam Khokon, 55, and Tarek Rahman, 20, of Juri Majhpara village in the upazila. Officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station Sirajul Islam said that the 16-year-old singer, a disciple of Matin Baul, had recently reacted to the trio's remarks on his attire. They had also threatened to banish him from the village if he didn't quit singing, police said. A case was subsequently filed against the five people in connection with the assault, following which the police arrested the trio on Tuesday night. "Efforts are on to nab the other accused," the OC said.

A local leader of Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL) and another member of the student wing have been arrested in connection with an attack on a government official in Kurigram’s Char Rajibpur upazila. Police picked up Jewel Rana, BCL general secretary of Char Rajibpur Sadar, and Abdur Rahman Biswas from their houses in the upazila late on Thursday night on charges of assaulting project implementation officer (PIO) Souvrata Das. Souvrata was distributing Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) money on Char Rajibpur Union Parishad premises on Wednesday morning when Upazila Chairman Akbar Hossain Hiro and Upazila Awami League President Abdul Hai went there, along with party activists. Later he was rescued by his colleagues and the local police and rushed to Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Souvrata said, "I was attacked because I couldn't give proper attention to the Upazila Chairman while distributing money to the local people." Later he registered a complaint with police. Char Rajibpur Police Station officer-in-charge Nabiul Hasan confirmed the arrest of the two BCL leaders and said a case was registered last night in connection with the attack on the government official.
