A policeman, who was seriously injured after being hit by a speeding car at a police check-post on July 4, died at a Dhaka hospital Sunday. Critically injured Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md Liton, 40, was undergoing treatment at National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital where he breathed his last at around 11:45am, Assistant Commissioner Md Rafiqul Islam of the police's Gulshan zone said. The incident happened around 1:50am on July 4 when Liton was on duty at a check-post near the Police Plaza shopping mall in Gulshan. Also read: Policeman 'killed' in Dhaka road accident "As Liton signalled a car to stop, the driver did not listen. He sped up, hit and dragged the policeman for about 1km. With critical injuries, the ASI was rushed to hospital," Rafiqul Islam said. "Later police and locals managed to seize the car. The law enforcers rounded up the driver Touhidul Islam and owner Masud Gazi of the car. Also, liquor bottles were found in the car," he added. A case was filed with the Gulshan police station in connection with the incident. "The driver Touhidul confessed before a Dhaka court that Masud worked as a liquor supplier. They were taking liquor from a Gulshan warehouse to Fuang Club when Liton asked them to stop. Both Touhid and Masud are in jail now," Rafiqul said.

Soumen Kumar Roy, the suspended assistant sub-inspector of police confessed to shooting his wife, her child and a young man to death in a statement before a court on Monday.   The victims of the gruesome crime were Soumen’s wife Asma Khatun, son Robin and bKash agent Shakil Khan who were killed in broad daylight in Kushtia city. Soumen, the lone accused in the triple murder case, confessed under Section 164 in the court of Kushtia Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Enamul Haque. The policeman confessed that he had committed the crime as he could not accept the "extra-marital affair of his wife Asma with bKash agent Shakil." He also told the court that he left his workplace without permission and came to Kushtia early Sunday from Khulna by bus and brought a service pistol and bullets with him. He said he wanted to take Asma to Khulna, but she refused to go with him. At one stage of altercation with Asma,  Soumen got furious and opened fire before gunning down seven-year-old Robin and 28-year-old Shakil. Panicked the boy tried to run away, but Soumen caught him before shooting the boy dead. The shootings took place at a market in the district town's PTI Road around 11 am. As the locals came to the rescue, Soumen threatened them with his weapon. Later, people began attacking him with stones and brickbats. The gun-wielding Soumen then threw down his weapon and locals took him into custody before turning him over to the police, according to Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sabbirul Islam. The victims were rushed to Kushtia General Hospital, where they were declared dead. On Sunday night, Hasina Khatun, mother of Asma, filed a case over the incident with Kushtia Model Police Station, said Sabbirul Alam, officer-in-charge of the police station. Meanwhile, the bodies of Asma, Robin and Shakil were handed over to their families midnight Sunday. Asma's brother Hasan said her sister was Soumen's second wife. Soumen went to Kushtia without any official authorisation and killed three people there, said Khulna Superintendent of Police Mahbub Hasan. "The ASI was not on leave. He has been suspended and legal actions will be taken against him."

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police was held Monday for allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman who was under institutional quarantine in Khulna city after returning from India. Sadar police arrested ASI Mokleshur Rahman soon after the woman had filed a case against him today, Khulna Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (South) Anwar Hossain confirmed. Also read: Woman kept under quarantine dies in Jashore "Mokhlesur, posted at the Khulna Metropolitan Police Court, was assigned to the Primary Teachers Training Institute (PTI) quarantine centre on May 1," Anwar said. "Today the woman filed a written case with Khulna Sadar Police Station accusing Mokleshur of raping her at the quarantine facility Friday." According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman alleged that she was sent to 14-day mandatory quarantine at PTI, soon after returning from India on May 4; during the quarantine, Mokleshur and she had a romantic attachment and the policeman sexually assaulted her on May 14.
