Khulna's Paikgacha upazila has faced the maximum brunt of cyclone Sitrang, with local farmers notching up huge losses in the natural calamity. Cyclone Sitrang made landfall in the coastal districts on October 24. Though there were no casualties in Paikgacha, crops spread over several hectares and a number of fish enclosures were damaged in incessant rains triggered by the cyclone. Paikgacha upazila senior fisheries officer Md Tipu Sultan said that about 6.1 metric tonnes of fish across 112 enclosures, belonging to 83 farmers, have been washed away. In Garuikhali union, fish farmers suffered losses to the tune of Tk 30.71 lakh. "Due to the rains from Sunday night till Tuesday morning, most of the fish enclosures were washed away. Besides, the fish enclosures along the Garh-Ikhali river suffered damages," Tipu said. Md Amirul Azad, senior meteorologist of Khulna Meteorological Office, said the district recorded a total of 229 mm rainfall in 48 hours to Tuesday morning. "Besides, there were no reports of any embankment collapse in the upazila."

More than 8,000 fish enclosures in Bagerhat have been washed away by tidal surges triggered by the depression over the Bay, said the district fisheries department on Wednesday. Among them, 500 fish enclosures washed away in Sadar upazila, 2,000 each in Mongla, Rampal and Morelganj, while 500 in Kachua and 1000 in Sarankhola upazila. Different species of fish, including shrimp, worth Tk 3 crore have been washed away causing losses to  around 7,000 fish farmers, said Bagerhat District Fisheries Officer ASM Russell. Upazila fisheries officers were asked to prepare a complete list of damages, he added. They demanded incentives and loans on easy terms to save the shrimp industry. The low-lying areas of the coastal district have been inundated by tidal surges due incessant rains for the last five days triggered by the low pressure formed in the Bay. The weather department here has recorded 33 mm rainfall in the district in 24 hours till 6 am Wednesday. Dilip Majumdar, in-charge of Dublarchar Forest Outpost of Sundarban East Division, said water did not enter the Sundarbans today. The fishermen started to go back to sea with their trawlers, he added. Amaresh Chandra Dhali, in-charge of the Mongla Meteorological Observatory, said the well-marked low over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining area is likely to weaken gradually. “Weather may turn normal from Thursday.”

The district fisheries department confirmed on Friday that some 4,470 fish enclosures and over 400 ponds in Bagerhat have been inundated by tidal surges triggered by Cyclone Yaas. Bagerhat District Fisheries Officer SM Russell said that tidal surges affected the fish enclosures and ponds in eight upazilas of Bagerhat. "Different species of fish, including shrimp, worth Tk 6.5 crore have been swept away," he said. A list of victims has been sent to senior officials, he added. However, according to the fish farmers, the amount of the loss is more. On Wednesday, due to the impact of Cyclone Yaas, water flowed above the danger level in various rivers of Bagerhat.
