Heavy rains lead to horrific waterlogging in parts of Chattogram
Incessant rains since Tuesday night sent low-lying areas of Chattogram city under water, causing indescribable sufferings to its residents.
Waterlogging continues to haunt the residents of the port city as its authorities have so far failed to resolve the protracted problem.
People living in Halishahar, Bakolia, Agrabad CDA, Bahaddarhat, Sholoshohor, No 2 Gate, Muradpur, Prabartak and Chawkbazar areas are experiencing the unusual waterlogging following the heavy rainfalls.

Some people were seen wading through knee-deep water to reach their destinations in the morning. At some places, the officer-goers had to pay extra fares to reach their workplaces, reports the UNB correspondent after visiting different affected areas.
According to the local Met office, the active monsoon triggered the rains and that may continue for another two days.
“The rains may continue for two more days. The Met office recorded 28 mm rainfall till 9 am today, and this is happening due to active monsoon,” said Sheikh Farid Ahmed, meteorologist of Patenga Met office.

Landslides hit Chattogram, no casualties reported
Although heavy downpours unleashed landslides in the hills of Lalkhan Bazar and Ambagan Floorpass of Chattogram city Thursday, no casualties were reported.
However, steady rains in various parts of the port city and resulting landslides obstructed traffic on several roads.
Following the incidents, the district administration relocated five families from the affected areas and cleared the debris.
Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mominur Rahman said, "The district administration and the Fire Service and Civil Defence officials visited the spots and are taking stock of the situation."
"Amid concerns about more landslides, the district administration has taken steps to relocate people from the risky areas," Mominur added.

On Wednesday night, more than 400 people living in the hills of Chattogram city were shifted as steady rains continued.
The landslide concerns caused the district administration to immediately relocate the families living in the hills of Lalkhan Bazar, Motijharna, Batali Hill, Akbar Shah, Hill-1, Hill-2 and Bayezid Link Road in the wake of heavy monsoon rain for the last few days.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecast nearly 570mm of accumulated rainfall between July 27-30 and issued warnings of heavy rain and risk of landslides in some hilly regions of Chattogram division.
Hilly areas of Chattogram are especially vulnerable to landslides because of widespread deforestation in the hills. On Tuesday, seven people were killed, including five Rohingyas, in landslides triggered by over 20 hours of rain from Monday onwards.

Environmentalists say the number of people living at risk in the hills of Chattogram is around 1 lakh. From 2007 to 2020, more than 200 people lost their lives in landslides in Chattogram.
The highest landslide fatalities occurred in 2007 when 127 people died on June 11. Besides, 30 people were killed in a 2017 landslide.

400-plus people evacuated in Chattogram amid fears of landslides
More than 400 people living in the hills of Chattogram city have been shifted as steady rain threatens to unleash more landslides.
The landslide concern caused the district administration Wednesday to immediately relocate the families living in the hills of Lalkhan Bazar, Motijharna, Batali Hill, Akbar Shah, Hill-1, Hill-2 and Bayezid Link Road in the wake of heavy monsoon rain for the last few days.
"They have been moved to four shelters of the city – Al Hera Madrasa, Raufabad Rashidia Madrasa, Firoz Shah Primary School and Lalkhan Bazar Primary School – in the night. Meals and first aid were arranged for them," Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mominur Rahman told UNB.

"Also, 25 risky establishments were evicted during a drive," he added.

Eviction begins on Chattogram hills to save lives during landslides
Authorities have started a drive to evict families living illegally on the high-risk hills to save them from possible landslides casualties during upcoming monsoon.
The drive was launched on Monday by the district administration and department of environment of Chattogram.

It started at 11 am from the Bayezid section of the city's Faujdarhat-Bayezid Link Road.
Six magistrates conducted the operation in three groups.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mamnoon Ahmed Anik told the media that all illegal structures on both sides of Bayezid Link Road were being demolished.
“A simultaneous eviction drive led by six magistrates is underway in Kattli, Hathazari and Sitakunda sections of Link Road,” he added.
Rain triggers landslide fear in Chattogram; Over 50 families evacuated
A large number of police, RAB and fire service members were deployed in the operation.
According to the Chattogram district administration, around 835 families are living illegally in 17 high-risk hills of the port city.
Besides, 18 new hills were cut during the construction of CDA's Bayezid-Faujdarhat link road. The first day of the eviction drive saw the removal of the illegal establishments which crept up on these hills.
Environmentalists say the number of people living at risk in the various hills of Chittagong is around one lakh. From 2007 to 2020, more than two hundred people lost their lives in landslides in Chottagram.
The highest landslide fatalities occurred in 2007 when 127 people died on June 11.
Besides, 30 people were killed in a 2017 landslide.
