A sub-inspector of Uttara West Police Station has been withdrawn following the detention of three students of anti-discrimination movement in the capital’s Uttara. Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Sayeed was closed after the incident, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Uttara Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ahmed Ali said on Tuesday night. “The action was taken based on complaints from the students and for bringing the three students to the police station,” he added. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when anti-discrimination students held a meeting on Gausul Azam Avenue in Sector 13, Uttara. During the gathering, a police team led by SI Abu Sayeed detained three students—Asiful Haque Robin of IUB, Akash of Uttara Town Degree College, and Bappi of BIST in Gazipur. Fruit traders’ protest disrupts traffic on Dhaka-Barishal highway Following their detention, fellow students launched a protest, marching towards the police station and demanding their release. The protest escalated as demonstrators blocked the highway and reportedly attacked Uttara West Police Station, leading to injuries to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mehedi. Upon receiving the news, senior police officials, including the deputy commissioner of Uttara Division, arrived at Uttara East Police Station for discussions. Later, around 9pm, the detained students were released. A written complaint was also submitted by the students to the police station, seeking clarification over the incident.

Police recovered the body of a caretaker from the ground floor bathroom of a building in the city’s Uttara on Sunday. The victim, identified as Subal Pal, 50, had been working as the caretaker of the building at Plot no-10, Road No-10 under Uttara Sector-3 for last 10 years. Also read: Decomposed body recovered in Narail Being informed, a team of Uttara West Police Station went to the spot and recovered the body at around 8:15 am. The caretaker's hands and legs were tied by plastic and stabbed injuries were found in the neck and right ear, said SI Yousuf Ali of Uttara West Police Station. After the legal process, the body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital Morgue for autopsy. Also read: Unidentified body recovered in Kurigram The preliminary investigation revealed that unidentified people had entered the house, tied his hands and feet with a plastic rope and stabbed him in the right ear and neck. Details will be known after receiving the autopsy report, Yosuf said.
