Expat student drowns after falling into river in Kishoreganj
An expatriate student, drowned after falling into the river while trying to board a launch in Bhairab upazlila of Kishoreganj on Monday (April 22, 2024).
The incident happened at the Bhairab Bazar Launch Terminal around 8:30 PM on Monday.
The deceased was Al Islam (30), son of Alauddin, director of the Bhairab Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Bhairab River Police Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter.
He said, after being informed, a police team reached the spot and rescued Islam with the help of local divers after 40 minutes. He was taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Islam had gone to Germany for studies on a scholarship about a year and a half ago. He came home on vacation a few days before Eid.
Family members said Al Islam was going to board a ferry to hang out with his friends by the riverbank. At that time, he slipped and fell into the river.

60 'missing' in India ferry accident
At least 60 people are missing after two passenger boats crashed into each other in the Brahmaputra river of the northeastern state of Assam Wednesday, officials said.
The two boats carrying over a hundred passengers collided near Nimati Ghat in the state's Jorhat district, some 350km from Assam's capital Guwahati.

"So far, some 30 people have been rescued. One of the boats has capsized in the river. Rescue operations are on," a state disaster response force official told the media.
Local TV channels aired footage of the rescue operations by the disaster management personnel.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted to say that he had directed the Jorhat administration officials to help in the rescue operations.

20 hurt as ferry hits Padma bridge pillar
At least 20 people have been injured in a ferry accident in the Padma river in Munshiganj, officials said on Friday.
The accident occurred when a Ro-Ro ferry, named Shahjalal, crashed into a pillar of the Padma bridge near the Mawa area of Munshiganj around 9am.

Though the front part of the vessel has been mangled, there was no structural damage to the bridge, the officials said, adding that all the injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
Assistant general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport and Communication, Shafiqul Islam said that the passengers fell over each other as the ferry hit the pillar.
"Some 33 vehicles that the ferry was carrying also sustained minor damages in the impact of the crash, which completely destroyed the pantry area of the vessel," he said.

Master of the ferry, Abdur Rahman said the steering wheel got dislocated as the vessel's electrical circuit broke down suddenly and strong river current triggered the crash.
The bridge authority has expressed concern as three ferries have collided with the pillars this month only.
